Comics What if your favorite character was the opposite sex?

If your favorite character was the opposite sex, would you:

  • Still follow the character...

  • Loosely follow the character from time to time...

  • Show no interest in the character whatsoever...

  • Follow a similar character with the same sex as myself...

Given the fact there are countless characters out there (only 198 now), explain why it matters or why it doesn't matter that your favorite character is the same sex as you, or the sex they already are.

Meaning, if your character was created as the complete opposite sex since the beginning of their creation, do you think you'd be into that character today?

Forget about transgenders, or sex operations. This is strictly if they were created as a different sex altogether.

Is it that you relate more to their personality?

Are you connected on a spiritual level?

Is it the way the look, being the sex they are?

Do you mean suddenly transgendered or having been the opposite sex all along?

No. If they were created as a different sex since their creation.

If Storm was a guy, Cyclops was a woman, Phoenix as a man, etc.

My favorite X-Men are Wolverine and Nightcrawler. So apparently they'd do just fine as women, at least according to X-23 and Nocturne (or Blink). ;)

On the other hand, my third-favorite character is Emma Frost... who, I think we can agree, would be somewhat different as a guy...

True there is Nocturne and X-23, but they don't have the same "intensity" as their male counterparts. And that in itself may be the breaking point for some readers. That's what I want to find out from you guys.

My favorite is Colossus. I like him for his gentle giant attitude and from a bodybuilding standpoint. I don't think that would work too well as a woman; though I suppose a woman could have the ability to transform into organic steel.

Storm, Jean Grey, Wolverine, and nightcrawler. If they were opposite i would not like them as much execpt for Wolvie and N-crawler

Doesn't Lifeguard have the same? Golden armour?

I've already seen what Storm looks like as a man and I don't wanna go there again :P

Why not? You a metallic sexist?

My favorite character is Cyclops, if he now suddenly change sex I won't mind too much...as long as he keeps acting like Cyclops I'll be fine with it.
Like him since I was a kid, never give any thoughts to his gender, simply doesn't matter.

Considering her personality might be slightly different because it's a woman, you wouldn't be interested in the character at all, simply because it is a girl?

Chang, it's not a sudden transgederation. This was established already. He's asking if (certain character) was always the opposite sex, would you have caught on?

I think that's a very difficult question to answer. Because let's face it. Comics inherently treat women different from men for the most part. Men in comics are almost never used as sex objects, yet there are very few women in comics who can claim the same.

Would I have been as interested in Cyclops if he was a woman all along? I don't know. It depends on whether or not they treated her like a real character instead of a brunette bimbo who shoots lazers out of her eyes. Granted, the X-Men comics have more often than not been more interested in treating women like characters than most comics have, but there have been more than a few X-Women who have slipped through the cracks over the years.

I think I wouldn't like Havok as much if he was a girl. I dont know why, I think I lean more towards male characters. Could be because I'm a guy, I dont know.

I see your point, and the comics usually make female characters nothing more than a sexy image...that's why most female readers rarely favor the same-sex character.
If they made Cyclops a sexy woman who had nothing in common with the male Cyke except optic blasts, I probably would'nt be at all interested in her. They will have to make her as strong leader/character as this Cyclops now to make me interested.

Well I can't look up to a buff woman for motivation as far as weight lifting goes. It just wouldn't work. Powerhouses with super strength are a dime a dozen in the Marvel Universe. A gentle one who'll only bash skulls if he absolutely has to, is mroe interesting.

Hey, I love the women-folk. Even metal ones.

Yeah, yeah, you say that now, but just wait until a representative from the NAAMP (National Association for the Advancement of Metallic Peoples) knocks on your door.

Well Storm was my favorite character before this whole marriage screw job. Anyway had Storm's character originally been male instead of female, I'm not sure if the character would be a favorite. It would really depend how he was drawn though. Part of Storm's charm is that she is female, it makes her whole character work better and makes her stand out more.

I most certainly wouldn't have like Wolverine at all had he been female. This is why I can't stand X-23 and thought she was a horrible idea and still do.

Prof. X I might like all the same if the character was female (not like Cassandra Nova though).

Now Emma is a character who I most likely would have liked a LOT more had the character been male instead.

Well, I've gotta say - a strong part of Gambit's appeal as a character is that he's the ideal bad boy, romantic anti-hero all the girls wish existed. Having said that, I would still follow the character in unconventional female form - someone strongly sexy and charismatic and badass and mysteriously beautiful like Angelina Jolie being the sort of female model to follow in this case.

Although I'm not a Gambit fan, I would have to agree with you and say that a female version of the character would be quite appealing. I would even go as far as saying she would probably be the new "Emma Frost"... Sexy, seductive, and charasmatic.

The best Gambit fan art of all time was Gambit as a woman.

Well being that Storm is my favorite character, I would still stick with her. I mean, Iceman has just begun to be one of my favorites and in a different thread, Profezzor mentioned that it has been stated that he was hyposex or something. But it really didn't change the fact that I liked him. And if Storm is my favorite charcter an i'm willing to stick around for Iceman, then I KNOW i'm willing to stick around for Ororo.

I could be going out on a limb here, but from what I understand from Carey in his interview, Iceman might be written in as being gay. Not that I have a problem with that, but the fact that he's been in countless relationships with women over the years, makes me wonder why all of a sudden people are claiming he is. I think writers have a lot to do with it too. Claremont doesn't like him, and it's a lot easier for other writers to give him that title, just to defame him and put him asside... Thinking mainstream fans wouldn't like him because of that. Here's a quote from that interview:

"I want Bobby, like Rogue, to start using his powers in a wide range of striking and innovative ways, so we stop thinking of him as just the guy who can make ice slides - like Frozone in the Incredibles. In terms of his character arc, though, he's going to get into a relationship which will make him re-assess himself, his life, his core values. If we see Rogue becoming stronger and more assertive in these early issues, we may see Bobby becoming more hesitant in some ways and more uneasy about choices he's made."
