What is most responsible for the Dreamcast's demise?

I'd say its because Sega came out with WAY too many systems during their run in the console wars, people would go out and buy the newest and greatest from then only for their purchase to be outdated in only a couple years.

I blame it on Sony hyping the PS2 way beyond what they knew it would actually deliver. There was no way that Sega could compete with the idea of a console that Sony could pretend they were gearing up to release to the public. It caused a lot of people to wait, and it somehow even sucked in developers like EA (the gaming devil) who decided to NOT support the dreamcast which was already a success and had an established user base to sell to, instead opting to support the PS2, which had no established user base to sell to and was not already a success. Sega did damage themselves, but at the end of the day, outside parties killed the company more than they themselves did.

Yup, the Dreamcast had a ton of amazing games, much better then Sony's launch line up. But to many people were hyped about it and bout the PS2 anyway.

Sega should have kept with it the DC, but they didn't.

-Horrible controller
-Stupid gimmicky memory unit
-Dial up internet
-Lack of 3rd party love
-Half of it's games were sooped up PS1 ports in the first year
-Any game that wasn't Sonic or a PS1 port in the first year was a niche odd ball games like Seaman or Space Channel 5
-Unfocused press campagin by Sega

It had dial up internet because it was a time when broad band or DSL wasn't as popular as it is now.

The DC was a great system, to bad we're not seeing the Dreamcast 3 by now. :(

The mainstream gamer.

For not buying the DC despite the huge number of totally amazing games the console had and instead going for the PS2 gobbling up every morsel of hype and insubstantiated bull**** that Sony fed them like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Say what you want about Sony being responsible and whatnot, but it doesn't change the fact that if the masses weren't so gullible enough to swallow Sony's load, they would have at least given the DC a chance, realized how good the system was and it wouldn't have died such a sudden death.

Lack of maketing.

Lack of 3rd party Support

The SONY hype machine.

The Playstation 2 (having a DVD player in Japan was a very big help) and the complete lack of 3rd party support that made Nintendo look like Sony in terms of third party support.

Sega sucked at marketing and it was way ahead of it's time

Sony, without question.

1. They lied to the gamers.
2. Gamers bought their machine.

That's it really. Nothing is Sega's fault. Sega had

1. Great hardware
2. Great library

that's enough to warrant success. However, Sony's hype lead people to believe in "realities" that never happened and ended up buying a machine that barely out-performed the Dreamcast and for a while, lacked the amount of good games.

Sony tried to do it again with the Xbox360, calling it the "Xbox 1.5" and such. Thankfully, it's not going to work, because I'm not going to buy a $600 console, or a little crap that I can't even control with reasonable ergonomics.

I still say Dreamcast had the greatest launch ever. But everyones pretty much stated why. The whole DVD thing was a huge help, especially in Japan.

Without question the company most responsible for the failures of the Dreamcast is:

1. Sega
2. Sony

If you say otherwise you're crazy. Saying Sony is most responsible for the fall of Sega and the Dreamcast is like blaming Sony for the fall of Nintendo with the N64. You can't blame the other company for taking the dropped ball and running with it.

I guess that's going to be your new tactic from now on.

Let me state it simply for you, if coporate Sega didn't have the IQ of a rock, the Dreamcast wouldn't have ended up in a position to be killed. What dug the grave of the Dreamcast was the Sega CD, the 32x, the Saturn, all the little decisions at Sega the world round. Not the hype of the PS2, and had the reality of the situation compared to the mindshare hype been such a disparity, then the Dreamcast would of had no problem. Why did the Dreamcst do poorly? It didn't have third party support.

Why not you might ask: BECAUSE SEGA IS A ******ED COMPANY WHO WASTED ALL THIRD PARTY GOOD WILL BY RELEASING 2 SEPERATE ADD ONS TO THEIR GENISIS THAT WERE HALF HEARTED AND TANKED AND THE WORST THOUGHT OUT AND DESIGNED CONSOLE OF THE BIG CONTENDERS IN GAMING, NAMELY THE SATURN WHICH BOMBED SEGA OUT OF AN ENTIRE GENERATION.

Third parties had every right to be leery of Sega. Sega only has Sega to blame for being so stupid in the first place, and that idiocy caughtcost them to the point that when they finally did get things right again with the DC, they were so financially crippled, had burned so many bridges, and still made a mistake or two with their system, that they couldn't AFFORD to continue the Dreamcast, even though they had decent hardware sales and ok software sales that they could have only dreamed of during the saturn days. They could get out from the shadows of every peice of hardware and business decision they had made post-core Genesis.

Nintendo would of killed them off it is hadn't been Sony.

Don't go blaming Sony for beating one of the most mismanaged companies in gaming history. IF they hadn't ruined themselves the Dreamcast would have been in a much stronger position. (Third party support for one and the company would have had the fanbase and money to be more sucessful)

But then again you're the guy who wanted Sega to go exclusive to Microsoft where they have by far the elast fanbase and make First person shooters, I wouldn't expect you to understand the situation!

Quick everyone let's get mad at Sony for wounding Nintendo because Nintendo used Cartridges in the Nintendo 64!!!!

If you've got anything, by all means!

The reason Sega lost so much money in their first third party year is because they favored Microsoft, and Sega games just didn't sell on the Xbox, period. They still don't, not nearly as well as they do on Nintendo and Sony platforms.

Last night I was joking. No, of course I didn't want Sega to make FPSs. I can't believe you took that seriously.

The reason Sega's Xbox games sold so poorly was because there was ZERO marketting. I saw both Nintendo Powers back around and Xbox Magazines back around launch, and Super Monkey Ball got more ad space (multiple half page and full page ads) whereas Shenmue 2 and Toejam and Earl 3 got one single full page ad both.

The FPS thing was a joke meant to poke fun at Ubisoft. God, how crazy do you think I am?
