What is the purpose of...

This thread was actually creating some discussion beyond the "hey how are you ?" stuff that the Lounge is for, so i moved it back IF.

What's the purpose of internet debate? I mean, how many times have any of us ever gotten someone to concede a position they held? How many times have we even been even a little bit open to conceding a position we hold? It's a very rare thing.

And even if it happens, what in God's name is the point? Oh yay, I got some 16yo *****e from Alabama to admit the Batman '89 Batsuit was better than Batman Return's.

Yay!!! Thanks for bringing this thread back, Rob. :)

And now... back to questioning and answering some serious stuff...

If you don't see any point, then there is no need to participate.
Either stay on topic or don't post. Thanks.

Yes. That and whatever other things that have made you question their existence. Things like... warts, maybe.
I was talking to Wilhelm, now be a good little woman and go dust something. :cmad:

For me, the best possible outcome of a debate is that I learn something, either by reading or participating in one. Either that, or I'm really forced to think about something. It's happened a lot over in the Christianity thread.

I have actually changed my views on a few things after discussing them with people online.

Though, as you said, most of the issues that have changed my mine are almost completely irrelevant :(

Uh...I think you misunderstood.

I'm participating in the thread by asking that question. I wasn't saying this thread has no purpose. It's not really about debating or arguing anything.

Oh, I've got one!

What's the purpose of braille on the keypads of drive-up ATM's??

And that's good. That's what debate should be about. But, as I said, it seems like, most of the time, people (myself included, sure) don't even open themselves up to the idea of learning anything. It's all about trying to nail the person they're arguing with.

And, again, at least, in your case, it's about something relatively important in religion. So much of the time, hard fought arguments occur over much, much more pointless things.

I really gotta start debating with you to get you to stop thinking of Batman '89 as Joker '89.

And that's something that IS important. :o

Eh, sometimes that's the case with me, too. I can't really explain it, and it doesn't make sense.

Sometimes the argument/debate makes you want to nail your eyelids to the wall and just hang there for a while. :csad: That's when you know it's time to turn off the computer.

EDIT: I'm reminded of the ORGANICS SUCK!!! thread. :woot: Ah, good times...

I think it depends where you debate, debating comic book fans is pointless, they are entrenched in their belief that their ideal version of a character/suit/concept is the ONLY viable one, i find debating in the regular movies section is much more fun and filled with posters who are flexible when discussiing ideas and views...except if you're talking to Cyrusbales.

Oh wait! Why do they do the alcohol swab prior to lethal injection?

brail on the atms is a big one but thier is a story behind that, something to do with legalities, penn and teller did somthing on it.

So that a flesh-eating bacterium can't make its way onto the person and eat away his or her corpse before it gets cold.

Then they can have an open-casket funeral.

And it's those types of debates that've made me shy away from that kind of discussion in general.

Yeah, that's when it's fun. When you're posting to prove someone wrong or prove yourself right, but to gain insight on exactly why this guy or that guy feels differently than you. I wish there was more of that.

Again though, it seems so rare. Anywhere. Granted, I don't post in Misc. Movies a great deal.
