What motivates people to take up smoking cigarettes?

I'm sure there are many reasons. Some of the one's I've seen personally and/or read studies:

Institutions/MH floors in hospitals--a feeling of possession, boredom, fitting in w/ others and used like currency

Job Site-- fitting in with coworkers who smoke and socialize during cig breaks.

Enviornment--if you are raised up in a smoking family, the dangers probably aren't stressed.

School--peer pressure. Yes, it still exists although anti-smoking campaigns have opened alot of eyes.

These are some of the reasons. Pitifully dumb but true.

My Mother smoked until I was 13. (She might have even done it during pregnancy, I don't know.) My Father still does.

I despise it. I though living in a house with smoking parents would make you not want to smoke even more. Though my cretinous brother has taken it up, probably through peer pressure.

Out of my family (which is quite large - good old fashioned Catholic parents) i'm the only one that doesn't smoke. Never even tried it, and I too despise it. But it might be worth taking up so that I can sue the cigarette companies when I get cancer.

I don't get that, does that mean you're parents are against contraception and abortion, the prevention of life but have nothing against the possible killing of an already established life?

100% agreed, and I'm def not fond of it either, seen way too many ppl it's hurting and never felt like doing it despite being surrounded by it. Let's make a short list here

-Grandpa died before I was born which doctor told him stop smoking or you'll die, he didn't, he died.

-Uncle just recently passed away from lung cancer, and was a heavy smoker til the end.

-2 other Uncles are smokers, and neither is in good health or close to it.

-Friend smokes and can't walk a block without getting out of breath, and smokes so much ur eyes water.

-Step Dad's mom died from Breast cancer, which doctor said cigarrettes aggrivated her condition and hurt her health more, and that she needed to stop to limit some of the negative things her body was fighting but she didn't stop and kept smoking a pack a day, and I had to give my first speech at a funeral.

-Bro smokes and is getting more and more winded like friend is from it.

-Now my best friends dad has come down with emphazima from smoking, and was told he has 5 years or so to live it he doesn't stop. Then told all of us he wants to live but can't stop.

Lesson learned by me, never touching one. If someone else wants to they can, won't picket and protest to take that right from them, but would be happy if I never saw one again .

My brother started it because of the stress from college. My friends started it to be ass holes and blow it in other peoples faces, which makes them look bad ass.

You try it once and like it? How many smokers truly enjoyed their first cigarette? The smoke irritates your eyes and the smoke makes you cough. It's a miserable experience.

You have to force yourself to smoke for a while until you get addicted. It's pathetic.
