Recently a Mod closed a thread.

It wasn't because there were too many swear words in it.

It wasn't because there were too many dirty pictures in it.

It hadn't devolved into a flame war.

It wasn't even offensive in any way that I could see...

The reason for closing the thread wasn't specifically stated, however, I think the Mod closed it because... it was a foolish thread. A bit of silliness posted just to get a response. Something some folks might even have thought was just plain stupid...

Frankly, given a day or two, it would have died on it's own.

Which brings me to my questions:

Should there be rules governing when a thread should be closed?

Is the Hype a better place because Mod's close threads that serve no real purpose (like the Bump thread)?

Aren't we here, in part, just to have fun and be a little silly?

And how long do you think this thread will be allowed to live?

A thread starter should be able to request closure of their own thread, and it should be closed, no questions asked.

This is going to be another locked thread.

Also, anyone who is not a mod who says 'CLOSE THREAD' or something similar, should be banned for a week.

While I'd prefer that a mod, states the reason why they are closing the thread but not as much as not having some obsessive mods deleting every closed thread in an attempt to keep things "neat", you might as well talk to the wall I don't see it happening.

although people don't have to, one would hope that a mod would have the courtesy to at least state the reason why something is being closed/altered/merged/deleted

if anything it would just give an insight and be able to give a general direction to other members as to what type of threads will be tolerated or not.

saying this though, a lot of the time a silly thread by one member may be left while a silly thread by another member on the same topic may be closed suddenly.

At the end of the day, although it shouldn't matter, poster reputation does usually make a difference.

On top of this, i would hope that each member would be given the opportunity to close their own threads if they feel the subject matter is out of hand of if it has drifted, i've never understood why moderation was always required for this.

at the very least put it as an option for those posters with the highest account profile you can have as a privelege

I'm going to close this thread after I'm done watching the Doodlebops.

so since this thread is about to be closed anyway ........ anybody have something they want to get off their chest

How about the "If you don't like it.." pic?

im not feeling it :(

Well, there are people on here that have quite the rep that post inane threads as well as newbies, and those are pretty much left alone due to them being ironically clever or something like that, so it pretty much does depend on who you are.

You're a crazy woman.

naaah, I figured the question needed asking and that while I MIGHT get a warning I doubted I'ld be banned for asking the question.

The amazing thing is the Mod's have left this thread open, maybe (just maybe) they think there should be some guidelines.... :cwink:

the_ultimate_evil - I like the second one better too...

I like Jesus, he wouldve left that thread open.

Sometimes it does seem like some threads are just closed for the hell of it, when other simililar threads would remain open(at least for a while) any other day of the week.
