If Emma Stone had been playing Mary Jane from the start or alternately the filmmakers just decided to not kill off Gwen?
I doubt the filmmakers would have done a Goblin again so soon (but maybe introduce Harry and/or Norman) if not for wanting to have the death of Gwen in the plot.
