I just rewatched 'Get Shorty' earlier this evening and started thinking about what happened to the once great cinematographer and director Barry Sonnenfeld. I've always liked that guy and his movies... anyway, let's more into detail.

His debut as director was The Addams Family, which I think is really a fun movie, with great performances by Raul Julia, great visuals... man, what a debut. :wow:

He went on to helm the romantic comedy For Love Or Money, I'm one of the few actually liking the movie... :woot:

...and then he showed what a sequel needs with Addams Family Values, one of the best sequels out there, which even tops the original.

In 1995 and 1997 he directed other two great comedies. First Get Shorty (the sequel was weak) and then the cult sci-fi-comedy Men in Black. Do you remember the hype that movie had in '97? I do.

And then... Wild Wild West. :ninja: Produced by Jon Peters. Featuring Kevin Smith's giant spider. It sucks, but you gotta admit, this movie's connected to the Superman franchise. Doesn't change anything - it sucks.

He then helmed Big Trouble, which was delayed after 9/11. Good cast, fun movie. That's it.

You know what my second most-anticipated movie of 2002 was? Men in Black 2. I even watched it twice in theaters... but in the end it's just average, which is sad, especially since Sonnenfeld made such a great sequel with the second Addams Family.

...and R.V. - I didn't even watch the movie. It doesn't look good, and I don't want to watch another misstep by Barry Sonnenfeld.

So, to my initial question. What the f**k happened to Barry Sonnenfeld? You can't deny he had great potential.

:csad:

Watch "Pushing Daisies" next Wednesday and you'll see he's still great.

Umm, it was Jon Peters' giant spider. (Or did you say Smith's just because he likes to mention it a lot?)

I know it's Jon Peters' giant spider. But you know the story, so I guess you know why I said Kevin Smith's. :)

MIB 2 was beyond sad...it was goddamn unwatchable, like a vat of flaming puppies.

big trouble rules.... i love how it makes fun of miami :D

The Addams Family movies and the first Men in Black were brilliant. I wish he'd make more like them.

I wish there was a Mib3. To make up for the crap that was MIb2. Dang they pretty much just remade the first movie into the second.
Also I loved the wild wild west when I was a kid.
I happened to really like the giant spider.

That's a lil' harsh don't ya think? No way is MIB 2 unwatchable, the thing is that its a lesser retread of the first movie, like Rush Hour 3, it didn't add anything to the series, it was just like the first one.

I like it, but definately not as much as the original.

I even remember Will Smith expressing his disappointment in part 2 a few months after its release and how he hoped to do a 3rd movie with some ideas both he and Sonnenfield had in mind.

That was 5 years ago...Will Smith I take it, is over it? Lol.

Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Barry Sonnenfeld wrote a story treatment back in 2003. That's it. "Men in Black 3" didn't go any further. I agree with LostSon, that's the problem with the second "Men in Black," that's why I found it just average... but not unwatchable.
