What the hell was Magneto doing in the woods?

Sorry if this question has already been asked. My brother and I have been wondering this for a while now. When Magneto stops the X-Jet after the dogfight, is there a reason for him to be out there?

We pondered it for a while, but couldn't come up with an answer. I guess he was looking for Nightcrawler in Boston, but that would only explain what he's doing in that particular city.

Magneto is in the woods heading toward the School, seeking the X-Men's help.


How do we know they are near the School?
- Seconds before the X-Jet dog-fight sequence, Jean notes, "We're actually coming up on the mansion now."


Why is Magneto searching for the X-Men and in need of their help?
- Magneto is aware of Stryker's plans via Stryker's visits in conjunction with the information Mystique has ascertained while hacking into Stryker's computer. As Magneto states in the forest, they know Stryker's base is where they are building the second Cerebro but they don't where this base is . . . He needs Jean and Nightcrawler's help to find it.

How do they know Nightcrawler is connected to Stryker, etc.?
- Either Mystique receives this information on Stryker's computer as is shown in a deleted scene, or Jean and Storm simply fill everyone in on the situation (including Nightcrawler's involvement) while at the camp fire, and everyone connects the dots.

This is sort of related to the topic... why do we never see Magneto's island base (from X1) in any of the sequels? He is always hanging out in the woods. Is it because he is a fugitive now and is in hiding? But then again, wasn't his base supposed to be hidden in the first place? It seems like hiding out in the woods would be less guarded than an island fortress...
