Terror (1978)

This supernatural slasher starts off quite strong, although doesn't manage to sustain that. The film has a very Suspiria vibe at times (which director Norman J. Warren admitted was an influence), aided by Ivor Slaney's Goblin-esque score. Some of the acting is so-so, but - like Suspiria - this has some inventive kills (even if some of them don't really make sense). It's pretty atmospheric, feeling a bit like 'Hammer horror meets giallo' (the opening film-within-a-film has a very Hammer feel (especially their Twins of Evil)). There's fun to be had playing 'spot the face' from 70s UK TV (IMDb says the insanely curvaceous Cleo Rocos (of The Kenny Everett Television Show) has an uncredited bit-part as a party guest - although she would only have been 16 at the time) . Apparently the cast and crew had a great time making this - I can see why. It's good in parts, but there are times when it slumps with characters and scenes that seem completely unnecessary. Annoying, because it had the potential to be a good movie. 5.5/10.

Here’s the last two movies I checked out during my two days off:

Hellboy: The Crooked Man (2024)

Rebel Ridge (2024)

These movies were both enjoyable but vastly different experiences from each other. The lead for the latter is going to be the very first live-action Jon Stewart and I have to say after seeing this movie I can definitely why Gunn picked him. While I would’ve preferred a darker skinned actor, I can’t help but be more than pleased with the quality of actor they’ve chosen. This young man (Aaron Pierre) is a star and is going to go places. Can’t wait to see him put on that green ring and recite that corny oath.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man

I went into this with extremely low expectations. I was expecting a definite lesser (and maybe even a really bad) movie version of Hellboy, compared to the Del Toro offerinngs (I honestly don't remember much from the David Harbour version, except that he was ok in the role). I haven't read the particular comic, but the first thing that hit me at the beginning of this was that it actually felt like a typical Hellboy story. And if you take out Hellboy from the premise it could've been a southern gothic horror story.

This is apparantly a low budget flick, which is quite blatant here. It really feels like an indie low budget horror flick. It's quite effective though considering the budget. It's of course very different from the Del Toro films in terms of spectacles and effects, but that was expected. And of course we miss Ron Perlman's iconic performance as Hellboy. This actor isn't bad but this Hellboy still feels a bit toned down in terms of personality (and why is he smoking cigarettes here and not cigars, omg??!!I!I).

I expected way worse from this. It did feel kinda slow in pacing sometimes, which would be my greatest nitpick. And it's not a great flick, especially in terms of a Hellboy movie offering which I personally feel maybe need more cinematic spectacle. I still feel this was quite decent in the end though, especially considering the budget. And as mentioneded before, it felt like a Hellboy story. Over all the actors did well, I especially enjoyed Leah McNamara as the witch Effie Colb - she was loads of fun.

SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY (2024) Christopher Reeve, Dana Reeve, Alexandra Reeve Givens, Mathew Reeve, Will Reeve, and Robin Williams.

The feature length documentary about Reeve's life from getting the Superman role to his life after breaking his neck in a horse riding accident. Very powerful heart tugging film.

It's an odd duck of a horror film , but it's worth watching to see the cast which is made up of veteran actors of the time and actors who would become pop culture icons over the next several years.

It's the only time you'll ever see Burgess Meredith, Eli Wallach, Martin Balsam , John Carradine, and Ava Gardner , act along side the lesser to unknown actors , Chris Sarandon , Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Beverly D'Angelo ,Tom Berenger, Jerry Orbach, and Nana Visitor of Star Trek : Deep Space Nine.

The lead of the film is an actress I'd never seen before, Cristina Raines

I was in my teens during the 70's, so was very taken with the exotic beauty of Cristina Raines. One of the big things she was in was the epic mini-series CENTENNIAL.

'Salem's Lot (2024)

I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit. You can tell the studio did a hatchet job on it and parts of the film are quite incoherent, but what's here isn't bad and the movie has a cool retro aesthetic and autumnal vibe.

If you go in expecting as much a comedy as a horror, you might be pleasantly surprised...

This felt like they crammed every Alien movie into an AI and had it **** out a script to appease fans then hired a real director to cover it up. It also feels like Alien Isolation DLC and I mean that as a complement and a criticism. It's almost cliche modern Disney with it beating us over the head with callbacks and deep fake cinematic necrophilia. They should have just brought Fassbender back to play another android if this is the route they had to go. It has just as many problems as Scott's prequels do

Just as good if not better than the first. Naomi was fantastic in this also, knowing her previous work i personally thought her acting range was limited....how wrong i was. The best thing about these films is not the creepy imagery but the mental anguish these characters go through, by the end you feel exhausted man. Literally depleted.
