What would Christopher Nolan do with...

I really dig Christopher Nolan and so I am not disagreeing about him deserving praise. However, to put things into perspective Memento is a huge riff off what Dutch Filmmakers were doing with the Dogma 95 movement, a lot of people fail to realize that the late 90s renaissance of film with stuff like Fight Club, The Usual Suspects, etc all is a huge take off of the Dogma 95 movement, now it'd be a bit disingenuous to say that its a rip-off because its not, Nolan doing what all artists do which is to build off what came before, however his film was not the first.

Um...

I disagree.

Highly.

I think that it's great to namedrop Dogme 95, but the context you just did it in makes literally next to no sense.

How in any way do those movies have even a remote connection to any of the Dogme rules?

They literally don't follow any of them.

  1. Filming must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).
  2. The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs within the scene being filmed, i.e., diegetic).
  3. The camera must be a hand-held camera. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. (The film must not take place where the camera is standing; filming must take place where the action takes place.)
  4. The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).
  5. Optical work and filters are forbidden.
  6. The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)
  7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now.)
  8. Genre movies are not acceptable.
  9. The final picture must be transferred to the Academy 35mm film, with an aspect ratio of 4:3, that is, not widescreen. (Originally, the requirement was that the film had to be filmed on Academy 35mm film, but the rule was relaxed to allow low-budget productions.)
  10. The director must not be credited.
Like, you just mentioned super-artificial films that have nothing to do with Dogme, and in fact Dogme is the ANTI-THESIS of them.

:huh::huh::huh:

lol

I have to disagree. While the main purpose of BB was to introduc a new vision of Batman in the real world, TDK must never be compared with Spidey 2, as it did more than just add more action and drama. It is praised like a new The Godfather II or Star Wars V, and it should be so, as it was the first superhero film, which changed everything in its genre of constant cliche and nothing else.
of course it should be :yay:
spiderman 2 was the sequel to an origin story.the same with TDK.

I love Nolan but I do not believe he has spawned a "new age in film-making" if you will. Yes he is a great director but I believe the hype surrounding him is absurd. I cannot wait to see what people will do next if Nolan DOESN'T return for a third Batman. LOL, next they'll say he's a sell out and is a quiter and completely do a 360 on their feelings about Nolan.

Same thing happened to Heath when he was first casted, brokeback jokes were made and people felt "backstabbed" that he got the role and would not let it go. After the first trailer, people then stated," I'll wait to see the movie before telling if he did a great job portraying the Joker." Now look at how people react to Ledger, and his death. After his death, almost everyone had their hearts open to Heath, including me. No one said another horrid joke, or negative thing about him for the longest time. The same with Nolan, if someone says one bad thing about him everyone jumps at that person. The "In Nolan we trust" is an example of how extreme the love for Nolan was. I saw it everywhere on the boards. LOL. And I don't mean to come off in a disrespectful way to any of you, I'm just saying how I feel about Nolan and how people react towards him. :)

To be honest, I got banned from a few other message boards simply because a few days after his death I was saying things like "oh great, now every little 14 year old ****rag is gonna go see this movie and say 'oh man its the greatest movie ever!11!!11!!!1' simply beause Heath offed himself" and "Well now that he's dead the movies going to do better than anyone ever would of imagined" and other things of that nature. I'd consider those pretty negative.

Which is true. I still stand by my statements in the past that had he not killed himself, the movie would of done no where near as well. But since he did, everyone is hailing the movie as the best thing ever, and how Heath Ledger is the best actor ever and other stupid **** that just shouldn't ever come out of anyones mouth, ever.

I'd like to see a Nolan comedy... I bet that'd be interesting :D

Agreed, and critics will turn on him eventually too ... that's what ppl do: elevate someone and then bring them down and trash them

Nolan is a great director, and i'm interested in seeing what movies he makes in the future :yay:

I agree that calling Heath Ledger the greatest actor ever is definitely an exaggeration, however, saying the movie would do no where near as good as it has without his death is, in a word, stupid.

Had you said, the opening weekend, or even, opening week would have done no where near as well had Heath not died, I would have agreed fully, but this movie has made too much money over a fairly long expanse of time (for today's movies, which don't run nearly as long in theaters as they once did) to say that Heath's death is a MAJOR factor in it's overall gross. The reason it made tons of money is because people are seeing it multiple times, and they wouldn't do that unless it was a good movie.

Heath's death only contributed to the movie's success in the opening week when the Hype was up. After that, it was the quality of the movie that drove people to see it two to three times.

I still think he's a God. :o I loved King Kong.

Comparing Nolan to Welles is like comparing The Rolling Stones to Fall Out Boy.

Hey guys!
It was confirmed some time ago that Nolan's gonna direct and write the sequel to The Prestige. It'll be called ''The Prestige 2'', which is a great title IMO. Rumours are that it will revolve around the Christian Bale character from the first one, (Alistair Bordan...he was called?) who has to deal with an army of risen-from-the-dead Angier clones. Then he calls in the hulp of Cutter (the old british chap, I forgot his name, he was in the first one too) who has teh ability to create something to fight the angry clones. You know, he made all those magic gadgets in The Prestige, for magic. He did the same in Nolan's Batman movies (He invented Batman's suit remember?) So in this Prstige 2 he'll make a giant robot-esque suit for Bordan. And also, it seems that the big climactic finale will be a huge Robot fight in Present London.

So what do you all think? Good news or what? I quite liked the first in the series and I'm up for another one! :D

Is it even confirmed or is it just one big joke?

I call bull****. This is the only place I've so much as heard one single word about The Prestige 2. That coupled with the fact that the plot sounds God awful, makes me believe that its false.

I loved Dark Knight saw it three times in theaters but in the end its simply a fun superhero movie just like all the rest with a pretencious coating on for good measure. I mean it follows all the same plot lines that Spiderman 2 face, choosing whether or not to be spider-man, people being hurt by being a superhero, the cost of doing good when your not being praised, the difference is that Spider-man did it in a much lighter tone. Dark Knight simply tacked on a bunch of first grade philosophy. Dark Knight was great, however it is no Godfather 2, its on par with Star Wars V though.

I endorse this post.

I love how after a comic-book movie comes out that is great, the "SHH Boards" just have to have a thread scattered along the boards with anything, or everything to do with 'The Dark Knight' and it's cast/crew members. I mean, I know it's an interesting topic but, if you're going to make a thread like this, why not have a single directors thread? I mean, I wake up every morning, come on here and it says: "The Official Christian Bale Thread; V2" or some crap like that. I mean, I bet that if I was here for the release of 'Spider-Man 2'... there'd be threads in here like: "Will 'Spider-Man 2' Surpass 'Titanic'?!?! OMG!" or some other stuff like that. Honestly, can we please cool it with this 'Dark Knight' invasion-crap, it's like say if Hannah Montana was on every channel, and no matter where you turned... she'd be there. You finally catch a break as you're on the TV Guide, but then, along comes Young Mrs. Hilton! Get the picture?

Yeah, I think whoever came up with the idea was just kidding. :o

Guys! Here's a heads-up on the Prestige sequel. The poster is here!
I can't wait for this. Anybody know the release date?
