The Avengers What Would Happen if Thor and Cap Bomb?

First, let me get this out of the way -- I am extremely excited for Thor and Cap and the shared Marvel universe as a whole. It's a great idea and I think they've done pretty well so far -- even if Iron Man 2 didn't quite meet expectations (though it was certainly a financial and critical success). But the fact that Iron Man 2 was not the HUGE hit we all anticipated made me wonder -- what if Thor and Cap underperform or hover around Incredible Hulk territory? Will The Avengers suffer as a result? Is Marvel jumping the gun by putting The Avengers into production months before Thor and Cap come out? They will have no choice but to release the movie at that point, but it could be at a significant loss if too few people show interest in Thor and Captain America.

I hope for the best, but I am certainly prepared to see this great experiment be just that: an experiment that hopefully informs better future decisions.

Discuss away! I'm really interested in all your opinions.

This is a good question. As it's been on my mind and some others for some time.

This is all very risky. But then again, since TIH underperformed, if the trailers do their job and the action is awesome, who won't be interested in seeing Hulk and Iron Man together. Not o mention this has never happened before on film. People will be interersted to see how this turns out. Same with Cap and Thor. I mean if the promotion is great people will at least be interested in it.

Either that or I'm completely wrong.

We'd be boned if they bombed.

But I honestly don't think they will bomb, unless the marketing is bad (it probably won't Disney & Paramount are behind it & they're the best marketers for movies) or the movies themselves are horrible. But if they're bad, they deserve to bomb.

If it bombs, either Avengers won't be made. Or it will be made with 25mil and end the superhero film genre until 2023.

It's not gonna happen, but I'll keep my old man's piece tidy in the closet just in case. Obviously Avengers will already have been filmed by then, so it's unlikely they won't be making extremely safe, high percentage movies. If anything they will under perform because they are too formulaic or predictable. Especially a concern with Cap.

The Avengers movie is going to happen, but if Thor and Captain America don't do well then the Avengers will lose a lot of momentum.

I very highly doubt either will bomb, at worst they'll make a lukewarm amount like TIH. And if the movies themselves aren't that good, which I also highly doubt, people will still come I think.

The way I see it, you only need two heroes to grab a person's interest. We've got 4 characters established in their solo movies by then, so I think we're good. What I mean is, if a person doesn't like any of the characters then they won't see it. If they only like one (like say, Iron Man) then it's a maybe. They may not want to spend their money to see a movie for one character when they didn't like the other characters or their movies or whatever. But if they like Iron Man and Thor, they'll be like "yeah I didn't like TIH and CA movies much, but I'll check it out to see Iron Man and Thor together, they're badass." or "I never saw the appeal in Iron Man and Thor didn't really look like my type of movie, but I like Captain America and the Hulk and seeing them fight together onscreen would be cool." Know what I mean?

I have to applaud them for shooting the movie before seeing the results of the box office though. They're jumping in and not looking back, making the movie they want to make, not to appease. (Of course they could change this with some slick editing but still)

If they do bomb though, then honestly I still think the Avengers has a fighting chance. The movie itself probably won't bomb, still do decent numbers. But I think Marvel Studios is depending on its profits to help fund their lower-budget efforts and short films.

I don't think it will. It's too high profile and when the fans are this excited, no movie bombs. I mean think about how awful Ghost Rider and Wolverine were and yet, lo, they were successful.

However, if they bomb critically, it will be up to Marvel to listen to people on message boards and find out what to fix. My major fear is that if (god forbid) some films do bomb, thats when Disney will insinuate itself into Marvel's decision making.

i think thor will do well enough but capt.A will bomb sadly.

Wow... because I feel just the opposite. I'm fearful that Cap, will bomb.

Both Thor & Cap are risky. Marvel does like to take a chance though. If both were to bomb it would be massively disappointing: But I don't think it would affect Avengers too much - Doesn't it start shooting in Feb/Mar? They'd already be well into shooting, if not wrapped by the time Cap/Thor come out

I think Thor Will make as much as the New Clash of The Titans Movie and Cap can make as much as Batman Begins

Either way, Avengers gets made because Iron Man's in it, which should be enough to bring in the crowds.

That sounds good for Cap, but I think Thor's gonna be a hit.

Marvel has to market these two like Iron Man. Have an awesome trailer for Thor in September & for Cap in July & the internet will explode.

I think Thor will be fine. Kenneth Branagh is a very talented director, and he's assembled one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) all-star casts in comic book movie history. Captain America, on the other hand, is probably more likely to flop. We all know how Joe Johnston's movies usually turn out (The Wolfman, Jurassic Park 3, etc.), and it seems like production is being rushed.

However, I trust Marvel. Independently producing their movies is the best decision they've ever made, and my own personal directorial opinions aside, I'm sure we won't be too disappointed.

If Captain America and Thor bomb (which is unlikely), then I think that Avengers will have to be marketed heavily towards Iron Man, and that IM will have to be the leader of the team. He would effectively be the Avengers' Wolverine like in the X-Men movies.

Cap is on the same time table as most big budget productions. IM2 shot 13 months before its release date, and so is Cap. And the script has been worked on for a couple years right? Casting has been steady. Now all that needs to happen is a kick ass trailer and an even more kick ass film.

They couldn't do that, they'd already be filming, if not be done with filming by the time reactions for Thor & Cap come in.

Yeah, everyone seems to feel like Cap's going to be rushed, but its fine. Everyone's comparing the fact that Thor has wrapped up filming and comes out only two months before Cap, but Thor could be ahead of their schedule. Anyways, aside form Evans(who I'm not against, just not sure of yet), the cast shaped up really nice and the script has been worked on for awhile. Joe Johnson's directorial history may not be that great, but he's never had this kind of success surrounding him. He's not going to win BEST Director, but I don't think he'll cause the movie to fail. If it fails, it will be due largely to writing and that fact that Evans doesn't hit a home run.

You know, i would be HIGHLY surprised if both of these become b.o juggernauts. I forsee one of these under performing. I just can't tell which one at this point. They're (Marvel) cramming too many of their heroes out for release within a short period of time.....not good.

^How? Is there something wrong with 2 Marvel movies coming out every year?

I think Marvel will have to eventually space out their releases. They have to realize not all their movies can become summer blockbusters. For Example Luke cage would work as a spring release but I don't think he'd do good in the summer.

Yeah, one will make all the money, and the other one will just get by i.e The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man in 2008.

That's ridiculous and suggests that people only have the desire to see one CBM a year. If you forgot, after the very successful Iron Man came another movie called "The Dark Knight." What a silly judgment to make based on one year.
