What's everyone's opinion on the mild banning of junk food from American schools?

i don't know that having healthier choices in the lunch line for kids is necessarily telling them how to live...its just giving them better choices.

Its a step towards it. Look at the rating system for video games...first it wasn't telling people what they could or could not play...then it was restricting sales based on it, now it is rating a game M because of what modders do on computers? Like I said though, kids are too fat so its good anyway too.

Chocolate makes you fat.

I think it's good for Elementry and Middle school. But for High school no, High schoolers are responsible enough IMO to make thier own choices. besides they could just go to the store before school and get it then.

High Schoolers are anything but responsible:confused:

I think they are responsible enough to choose what kind of food they want to eat.

I think you're a highschooler addicted to Twix:down:

Why should they be able to tell kids, [kids like me] who could eat as much of whatever they want and never gain a pound, that they cant eat certain types of food??

And overall, you're sick of stupid people, which is where the problem lies.

I think it would be better to give students more physical activity at school, because most students are eating whatever they want when they get home anyway. And some students dont get or do exercise outside of school or even at school.

Big problem is, it makes no difference if their parents feed them deep fried lard with a side helping of chip fat and a glass of melted butter for supper every day.train the parents as well.

The simple solution to the problem is to ban the department of education.

it comes down to education and choice, banning it in one place just means they will get it from another.

children need to be re-educated and have their eating habbits changed because they actually prefer the healthier things. This comes down to parents and schools showing them the benefits of healthy eating from a young age.

when this truelly happens, then they won't need to ban these items from schools simply because there will no longer be a demand for it, it will be taken from schools due to catering companies changing their strategies in order to fit their new market's desire.

it's all about bringing mountain to mohammed, not taking the cheeseburger from him.

Though I feel education on the subject of good health is necessary I can't help be think its a good move(especially for Elementary and Middle schools). It will cut down on the consumption of junk foods during the school day. On the other hand they need to start pressuring parents into worrying about thier childrens health.

Really though some of these extreme measure wouldn't take place if people started taking personal responsibility for themselves and thier children.

Why don't they just sell the junk food as usual, but put it high enough so that they have to jump to insert their money and jump to get the snack from the machine?

Yes, ban it from Elementary and Middle School - you don't want hyper kids in class rooms.

Leave it in High School, if junk food is the worst thing those folks are abusing, then that's a lot better than the other possibilities.

I don't really eat junk food in school. I hardly ever drink soda and stuff like that so this doesn't really bother me too much. I personally think the amount of soda some people drink is rediculious. One of my friends drinks 4 liters of Mountain Dew a day.

Too true. I steer clear of the stuff.

i wouldn't say it's a bad move it's a good move, but it's not the best move, especially if unaided with education.

eventually the kids will pick up their newer diets but without formulating a reason why then there's nothing to stop the trend returning once they are left to do their own thing when they are adult. (unless you think good habbits die hard and once they are stuck on a good diet, they are less likely to wanna adapt).

personally i feel the only way to truelly learn is by overy consumption.

host a fast food-a-thon where all kids get to scoff themselves till they are full, but then they have to carry on eating till they are sick, and completely overwhelmed by the food till it makes them comepletely ill.

now this will be the last time they eat that, and then whenever they wish to have it again, they'll remember the last time they had it and how bad they felt, and will probably rather stay clear of it since they have a clear bad association with it that they have shared with their peers (also peer pressure wouldn't allow them to go back to it since they will all remember how bad it was as well).

it may not ethically be the best way but heck, the immediate and long lasting results would be pretty damn imppressive.

They banned junk food at my old high school and that was over 10 years ago now.

Its no big deal if its a partial ban or a total ban... School is for the book learning not food chewing
