What's everyone's opinion on the mild banning of junk food from American schools?

I don't think it's gonna make a shred of difference in the obesity rate in this country, junk food has always been around.

I'll tell you what the problem is. The reason why the obesity rate in the country is the highest in the entire frickin world, and probably, the highest in the universe.....

.....because fat people are reproducing like bunny rabbits!

No big deal kids will just sneak the food in and eat it regardless. There's alot of money to be made on the candy market

*remembers pushing that candy in highschool*

There was no need at all to bump this.

Mods, please close.

Is obesity really a genetic trait that is passed on to a newborn?

I always thought it was

......2% of the time.

this is a bit off subject, but i don't feel like making a thread or anything about it...

but, companies now more or less have the wherewithal to make diet soda (and other various drinks) that taste almost exactly like their non-diet counterparts... and the nutritional value (calories, carbs, etc...) is almost like drinking water, with a bit of sodium in it.

so why do these companies still make soda products with close to 200 ("empty") calories, and 40-50g of carbs and sugar, when they have the technology or whatever to make soda with nothing but 40g of sodium in it?

i would imagine i could be, the same way alcoholism and drug dependancies can be passed on to infants...

or, if that's not scientifically sound, then it could always be a 'nature vs. nurture' thing, and babies raised by fat/druggie/alcoholic/healthy parents will adopt those traits.

That is true. Nice explanation.

....but sometimes, I do blame some fat people for complaining and not doing anything about it. Exercise and eat healthy.

i do that all the time... i have no pity for fat people. you may have been born "fat" but you can easily do something about it, and not surgery, either. i was 'overweight' (by only like, 20-30 lbs, but still) i got off of my ass, dieted, and lost the all that weight in a month. and it wasn't hard at all.

granted, i put a few of the lbs. back on from drinking and sheer lazyness... but whatev.

While yes, I agree, many people could lose weight if they only started exercising, losing 20 or 30 pounds in a month is not something that can normally be done.

Kind of. If you're parents are naturally built bigger, you will be too. If they just got fat from poor habits, you probably won't if you don't follow them.

there is a part of me that agrees with everyone in the idea that junkfood should indeed be banned in elementary schools and middle schools and not in HS. but everyone is entitled to their choices, and at a young age, most children are impacted by what their parents do. thus if a parent teachs their child to not eat the crap they sell at school, then i don't see a need to ban junkfood at any level.

as for obesity, i guess a part of it can be genetics, but for the most part (at least in America) the obesity problem is due to the environment that the children are growing up in.

That doesn't always work. If parents outright ban junk food in their house, never allowing them to eat it, the kid will want it. A parent has to control how much. That's what my parents did and I'm not a pound overweight. I have a bunch of his stuff on my MP3 player, but it's always better watching him to see his expressions.

I have his calendar so every day I start with a quote of his.

I think in the elementary schools it is fine. Little kids should be kept an eye on on.

High School, no. If a teenager wants to eat junk food it's their own business.

This is what it's like in Scotland, and it works quite well. Instead or junk food, little kids are served fruit and veg, milk and water and stuff. It's all free too.

J playa why you gotta be in denial?

hahahahahhahahaaha! you, my friend, are a dumbass... but keep making me laugh heh heheh heh :)

Parents should teach their children proper eating habits, but it's good they're banning junk food from elementary school.

The little Fatty McFatties are there to learn, not eat Ho-Ho's and Jolt out of a vending machine.
