What's everyone's opinion on the mild banning of junk food from American schools?

nonsense

genetics >>>> diet and lifestyle

you could diet and have a healthy lifestyle but if you got slow to no metabolism (from genetics) food sticks on you.

As my korean girlfriend's grandmother would say, "You so fat!" She does not hesitate to tell obese people they are obese, and it cracks me up each and everytime. These kids better start eating some apples, straight up.

Sorry, but you're talking out of your ass. Many people overcome what many would call bad genetics through proper nutrition and exercise, including champion bodybuilders, olympic medalists and professional sports figures as well as average people who get educated. Knowing how, when, what and how much of which foods to eat and how they affect your body is something most Americans have zero clue about so they happily stuff their faces with processed foods, sugars, refined flours and High Fructose Corn Syrup. Same goes for the topic of exercise. The genetics argument is a huge myth and is usually perpetuated by people who are too damn lazy to learn how to eat and exercise properly.

I'm glad they are doing away with junk food in school's. NO, kids are not old enough to make their own decisions... especially teenagers, who are the dumbest form of life on the planet.

100% correct jag

but genetics have more of a saying on you than lifestyle sorry man thats a fact

The biggest danger the comes from having overweight parents, is the loss of opportunity for learning good eating habits. When parents feed their kids junk, it becomes that much harder for the kids to turn themselves around later on in life.

So, given that so many parents are complete and utter failures at teaching their kids to live healthy lifestyles, it would be nice for schools to do more in the way of providing the required information, healthy food, and exercise. This goes for elementary schools, middle schools, and to some degree, high schools.

(High schools could have a vending machine or two, sure, but my school had a whole store of candy and chips. If you wanted something other than junk food, you had to buy the school's not so much up to par lunch, or bring your own. More could be done to provide some better options, and to make those better options actually seem somewhat appetizing.)

It's true, no amount of a healthy lifestyle will help you overcome this:

No, it's not a fact. It's your opinion, which you have yet to provide any sort of evidence in support of. It's hogwash, man. Lifestyle and diet are still greater than genetics. How many fat people wouldn't be fat if they just ate right and went for a walk once in awhile? How many people with heart disease wouldn't have any coronary problems at all if they didn't eat grease all the time? How many people wouldn't have asthma if they didn't smoke? How many people wouldn't have neck and back problems if they used better ergonomics in their jobs? How many people wouldn't have liver disease or cirrhosis if they didn't drink so much? Blaming genetics is an excuse that enables people to live unhealthy lifestyles and think that they can do nothing to change their situation. Ridiculous.

Yes, yes, yes! We are heading, at least, in the right direction. Now, if only corporate media would cut back on junk, fast food commericials, but that is like saying Peter North should stop f**king. Can't. They're all doing it for the money.
