Super 8

Loved it. It reminded me a lot like E.T. (well, the kid actors in E.T.) and a mix of Cloverfield. The chemistry within the cast was phenomenal, I was more invested in them than the "creature". While people say that they are somewhat disappointed in the "creature", I didn't mind it. It is what it is and I enjoyed it especially when he goes beast mode. All in all while it has some minor problems, it's a great old school film that is a great homage to Spielberg's films.

9/10

If it was in the fan art section, i would say that was a good poster, but in the real world of classic movie posters? Really, all it looks like is someone has copied a bunch of photographs of the actors, except not very well, and cobbled them together.

edit: i guess they are going for the 80s movie artwork, but it looks more like one of the many crappy video covers of bargain basement films you would see in a video store back in the 80s, as opposed to one of the classics. So, if that was the intention, they did a good job of it.

Sorry to sound like a moaner, lol, but that is just the way i would have critiqued it back at arty farty school.

Super 8 - 8/10

While there are some definite Spielberg moments with the likes of E.T. and Close Encounters, the film stands on its own as a J.J. Abrams film. It can work as a homage as well, but I prefer to look at it as just a film about the passion of movies and Abrams love of making them. It's why I got such a thrill out of the filming scenes between the kids. I had a huge smile across my face. All the kids are fantastic. Not one bad apple in the bunch. So to say all child actor suck is ********. Because all these kids have what we would want (i.e. to fanboys, not annoying)

The father and son story, to me, is the main part of it. Although a little more could have been emphasized, of course the film is about this extradordinary event occuring to bring people together. And it's done through this lense flare of an experience that is this film so to speak. Is this film special? Not really. It doesn't have to be. All the mystery and hype is now a curtain that's been set aside and revealed to be something that has heart and warmth.

Miller's Crossing. Another gem from the Coens. For me, they haven't ever made a bad film. My favourite film makers.

The Pianist

Never fails to make me get choked up without being overly sentimental, unlike another certain Holocaust film.

The Shawshank Redemption

No matter how many times I see this, it always gets to me. I always get teary eyed at the end as well as throughout. It overwhelms me. Such an uplifting film.

True Grit (2010) I have seen it a few times, love everything about it. the score is great too.

8/10 - best movie of 2011 that I've seen so far.

I've delayed from watching this film for some time but after watching it, I'm completely stunned by Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance as Truman Capote. He didn't simply do an impression of the author, he convincingly transformed into Capote. A truly magnificent performance by Hoffman, he deserve the Oscar he won for this film.

4/5

Super 8

What a special movie. It is well known Spielberg gave Abrams and Reeves their starts when he commissioned them to clean his old super-8s. It's nice to see things come full circle now as Spielberg has 'commissioned" Abrams to make a passion project dedicated to homaging his early films. And like Reeve's Let Me In, Abrams has done a wonderful job of recreating that Amblin feel long forgotten in big budget Hollywood cinema.

This is a movie that is truly sincere in its sentimentality and honest in its attempt to evoke that sense of childhood wonder several generations have grown up with from films like ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, as well as Amblin produced films such as The Goonies, Gremlins, and Stand By Me.

A group of preadolescent teens while making a Super 8 film witness a horrific and mighty Hollywood train crashed underwritten by ominous science fiction. However, the mystery they stand on the edge of is not nearly as interesting to the audience or the writer/director as the precipice of those final years before growing up that these characters hang from. Despite attempting to suggest a "simpler time" before cell phones, social media or even MTV, these kids are still like all of us and go through what we go through. Given Abrams and Reeves careers started on making Super-8s in high school, the sense of joy that is created around their filmmaking is infectious.

The driving alien mystery or how it effects the two lead characters' fathers is not nearly as interesting as the films Super 8 is trying to reference. When the third act becomes "save the girl from the monster," it loses steam remarkably fast. But, as a whole it is still a very entertaining movie and has an ending that Producer Spielberg would have been proud to direct back in his early days. This movie is a throwback that is far better than almost anything else that represents modern youth-oriented blockbusters. It is simply a joy to watch.

My thoughts.

My thoughts.

Ok, I might have to go see this twice now.

Super 8

I don't know, it was pretty good, but I don't think it's nearly as good as everyone else is making.
