Deathly Hallows: Part 1 - 5/10
Huh, I liked this in theaters. Harry, Ron, Hermione left to themselves in a moral forest amounts to boring territory, and the whole of the movie doesn't make much sense to me. Why are they on their own? If Harry's the prophet, wouldn't it make sense to send other wizards with them? David Thewlis's character and others made such a big deal out of his protection before and after the aerial battle, so why does he just send them off during the wedding's ambush? It might make make sense admist the confusion, but it never felt like they were in total danger there. Hell, why have a wedding -- or any showy ceremony -- in the first place when their land is being taken over by evil? Also, why is the Griffindor Sword just sitting in a pond? Questions bugged me throughout and I couldn't get much enjoyment out of it. Maybe I'm pushing suspension of disbelief, but I think there are serious story issues that needed revision. Though, I could be at fault, too. Nothing makes much sense to me either way.
As the franchise goes on, the color palette fades, villains resemble Robert Smith and the emotion is meandering. Eh, this "maturity" is pretty ironic. I think the Lord of the Rings movies had great attention to character, but if you aren't Harry Potter or the other two, you're a weak subordinate. Dobby's resummoned here only to make for a cop out getaway and stimulate the most sentimental instincts in the audience. His arc is transparent like this franchise's universe, at least what it's turned into over the past few movies. I enjoyed the Kafka, Orwell ministry, but it's...weird. Can't the wizarld world have enough common sense to learn from humanity's past? They all must have a copy of Brazil around or something.
