When did it become alright to be a hick?

Well, it’s not the North that still has the KKK strong hold and all the Confederate flags. Though Ohio is full of Nazi’s.

On the other hand, most of us Southerners realize the Flag is about pride, not Hate. It's too bad a few ignorant people have twisted it.

Yeah, pride in committing treason and wanting to keep your slave laws. This isn’t a “Yankee” telling you this either.

Pride in the fact that we're born and raised in somewhere just a little bit better. Proud in the fact that in a time where everyone else is throwing it away, we still cling to the things that made our country great.
And you know what, speaking personally, only for my great great granddaddy, and his brothers, they had no problem with giving up their slaves, as soon as the Government compensated them for the FORTUNE they had spent that was being ripped away from them.

You gotta remember, at the time, buying slaves was like buying farm equipment. You go spend 1/4 of your income for the year on a tractor, then have the government come tell you you gotta get rid of it and they're not paying you back. See how you like that.
It was a sucky deal, the government was shafting the people, they stood up for their rights just as much as blacks stood up for theirs. Oh and great great granddad, he had free-men fighting in his regiment during the war.

So was it right to own slaves? NO! Emphatically not.
But it also wasn't right to screw over the slave-owners like they did.

two wrongs don't make a right. Or did you miss that lesson in day care?

The difference is that tractors aren’t human beings, and you don’t own them. No matter how much you pay for them. Don’t get me wrong, down in my family tree my family lost members in the war (they thought for the South), but I don’t care about that. The south had it coming, and the right side won.

Fine, mk, different example, we've got sentient robots working for us. 200 years down the road, they decide thats a crime, and everyone who just bought the robots, has to give them up, but doesn't get paid back. how you like them apples?

I agree slaves aren't tractors, but at the time, they were thought of as less than human, so it wasn't a problem. We are taking that side of the moral dilemna out of the mix for a minute.

Was the North in the right, no. But if the South had won, we'd all be speaking German now, so it is for the better that we lost.

We? On your passport it doesn’t mention you being a citizen of the Confederate States. The attitude of someone being from a state instead of a country is exactly what’s wrong with the South. It’s even more prevalent here in Texas.

I agree with you, Kmack. I have very little tolerance for these people or their mindset.
It's just that those kind of people tend to be extremely racist and extremely unintelligent yet extremely outspoken

The louder the voice, the dumber the opinion.

Ever since the war, folks in the north look for any reason to put us down. Let the past, be the past people. :whatever:

Truth be told, what a lot of people think the south is...it isn't.

Comeon, lets be fair, you guys gave us Foxworthy, you brought it on yourselves

I can forgive the slaves. I can forgive the war. I can forgive the boring weeks spent in high school talking about the cotton gin...but I can't forgive Foxworthy :cmad: :cwink:

I can't forgive NASCAR, which is basically a toned down version of import racing.

The klan gives that flag a bad name. There's no shame in pride. People still fly the american flag, and look who's leading america right now.

my jaw hit the floor when i saw the trailer for that "delta farce" movie in the theater a couple of weeks ago. i can't ****ing believe how ****ty that thing looks. the way it ends with him posing with a machine gun spouting his hackneyed catch phrase. the worst part was that a solid portion of the audience was laughing along with it and really seemed jazzed to see it. i realized then that i'm living in the movie "idiocracy".

I was more outraged by the portrayal of the military, even if it is the National ****ing Guard.

That kind of image is really not what the American military needs right now.

There was talk of a Beetle Bailey film, but it was scrapped after the war started.

Yes and no. I was born in Texas, but I was raised mostly in New England.

Since I joined the Marine Corps, I've met alot of southerners I've become great friends with, and I want to visit where they came from(especially Marines I've met from Texas, Georgia, and the Carolinas.)

But I've also met alot of southerners that I despise because they're bigoted, narrow minded, and ignorant.

The good have outweighed the bad, but it's the worst that stick in your mind, you know?

Is it right to lump everyone in the south in with the inbred, racist hicks? Nope.

But it dosen't mean it's not justified for alot of people. A few bad apples ruin the barrel, my friend.

Pride in what? Please educate.

I see a confederate flag, I see a people who fought to keep the right to enslave a fellow man, amongst other things. Please educate us ignorant people.

When I see people my age with confederate flags on their car and belongings, there is a problem.
...and I live in Virginia Beach.

(Trying to be a hick when you're not one makes you look like a f***ing idiot.)

Also, some hicks who have a confederate flag on their lawn or have it in their car don't have it there for 100& pride.
There's a racial undertone there.

I'd rather more hicks than rednecks...hicks are usually the northern small town version of southern rednecks. They are not identical...they're actually a little bit more polite and educated, but still very sheltered from the outside world...this is where sometimes, mostly the hicks who grow up on farms or in trailer parks ends of their small town tend to be similar to the racist conservative rednecks in the bible belt. But again...hicks, to me are north eastern, pacific north west, and most norther midwest smalltown america. There is a difference...

As a southerner, I don't know how you can respect humanity and find the pride within the Condfederate flag.

Okay. Confederate flag issue.

Really depends on the person.

It symbolizes different things for different people.

Story:

A good friend of mine from North Carolina hung a Confederate flag on his hatch in our barracks at my last duty station.

Another Marine, a black guy from New York City, spit on it and tore it down.

Obviously, it symbolizes different things for different people. For the New Yorker, it was obviously something that represented slavery and opression.

For the North Carolinian(?) he said he saw it as a symbol of his state's history and heritage.

You can't say there's a racist undertone in it for everyone.
