When Gordon was killed I was like GASP! I couldnt believe they did that. when he came back and pulled the mask off to reveal he was still alive myself along with half the theater started clapping and cheering. I was wondering what your reactions were to this scene. BTW im sorry if this is already been discussed. I just saw the movie for the first time today. also what was your reaction to rachels death. thx

Well, that got a great response from the audience. I just love how they utilized Gordon here. And the Rachel thing... I was laughing inside. That didn't get much here, just whispers when Harvey's face caught fire.

I felt that the film really did a great job of selling his death to the audience without cheating/insulting the audience when he returned.

the audience cheered and i thought it was a cool set -up , I knew he wasnt dead but didnt kow when or how he would reappear -so it was a suprise .

rachel's death was upsetting to people at the showings i attened, both times i saw it .

There was absolutely no emotional response or drama during his death. Pretty quick and over with in an instant.

In both showings, people clapped when Gordon came back though. To be honest, I don't really think they bought his death either.

It didn't help that the trailers to the movie had The Joker saying, "Evening, commissioner..." and up until that point he hadn't been appointed the position yet, so I think a lot of people knew he had to come back.

I love this movie with every fiber of my being, but I have to be honest here. The second I saw a SWAT guy with a mask totally obscuring his face, I saw it coming. I just KNEW they wouldn't really kill off Jim Gordon. No matter how great the movie was there no doubt would have been countless comic book geeks on the net gnashing their teeth about it and I saw none of that prior to finally seeing TDK. Also, the first full trailer showed us that Gordon was involved with arresting the Joker.

I envy the people who were truly surprised by it.

It certainly wasn't smart to market the hell outta scenes featuring Gordon, that's for sure. Just the scenes of Gordon at the jail, and breaking the batsignal alone, were a huge hint that his death was far from real.

somehow through various spoilers i knew that gordon didnt die, but i agree with others that it was a little obvious if you paid attention to the trailers and clips. still, i like how it played out in the movie, especially when he reappears. when he said "we gotcha, you son of a *****" the audience clapped and cheered, i joined in as well. it was a great line.

oh yeah that was in the trailer. I guess I never paid(is that right)attention to the trailers that much. I knew the movie was gonna be darker and it was a more exciting experience to not really know what to expect from it. the rachel thing really surprised me because I thought something would happen with the building and harvey to burn his face but I never expected rachel to be the one to explode and die. I guess it adds THAT much more to just how evil the joker is in this movie.very well done movie. action packed and hit me in emotional ways I never thought a superhero movie could do.

Same here. As soon as the shotgun was cocked, I knew it was Gordon. Glad to see him being a badass here.

me & my friends were some of the only people to not be surprised by the fake death plan of gordons. every1 else was amazed

you do have to remember that most movie goers don't pay that close attention to the trailers, tv spots and whatnot like us bat freaks...at all 5 showings I've been to the crowd clapped/cherred at that scene when he returns...I think they set it up perfectly.

I knew they wouldn't kill Gordon. But in every showing I went to a number of people gasped when he came back to life.

yea youre right. I wasnt expecting the normal viewer to know that he becomes commish gordon.

well I have been a fan of batman my whole life but I think a part of me knew that the trailers would take away from the movie in some way. I am glad I never really paid attention. It was a more genuinne experience for me and makes the movie that much better because of it.

During the time Gordon was gone, I was a pissed off fanboy. I was so confused. When he came back everyone had a nerdgasm.

I guess it was ok; it was still pointless.

Did Batman help Gordon fake his own death? Washe even in on the deception? I've seen the film twice so far but still can't work out if Batman fits into the Gordon plan at all...

I thought it was great. That's what happens when you don't spoil yourself; you enjoy the movie more. I was shocked as hell when after he got shot, they told his wife that he was dead. At first I was in disbelief - you can't kill him before he becomes commissioner! But then I figured they just took some liberties with the license, which would be very possible.

Looking back, I think I heard the "evening commissioner" line before I saw the movie, but that wasn't in my mind at all. There's not much time to think about these things when you're enthralled in the movie experience.

The first time I saw the driver with his face covered, I thought it was totally the Joker. Of course, then I forgot about him during the whole Slaughter semi incident, and both times I've seen the film people cheered when Gordon came back.

That was so awesome, I thought he was toast.

I don't know if he helped him, but I think he certainly knew about it or suspected.

I knew he wasn't dead because he hadn't become the Commish or smashed the Bat signal yet. ;) Also, if you're going to kill off a mainstay like Gordon, you'd do it closer to the end of the film I think.

Still I love the scene where he comes back.

I definitely fell for it.....I read a review before I saw the movie that said "Nolan isn't afraid to kill off anyone...and I mean anyone." In retrospect he was referring to Rachel.

I was definitely pissed off and surprised for the 20 minutes where you think he's dead. I was shocked, and pretty pissed off, but also thought it was brilliant in a way because that was pretty much the only character you assumed would 100% not die besides Batman, since he wasn't even commissioner yet. I thought it was Nolan's way of saying that this was his universe...but at the same time I thought he did it mostly for shock value. So I was pissed off and intrigued at the same time.

At first I didn't remember the "Evening, commissioner" line, but then I remembered it and I thought "hey, do you actually see Gordon when he's delivering that line?" and assumed it was part of the misdirection. I vaguely recalled Gordon saying "knives and lint" and putting the knives down on the table, and then assumed that I was mistaken and it was someone else.

In any case, I was pretty relieved when he showed up again. But I think it was a great misdirection, and those 20 minutes of confusion when I thought he was dead was quite a cinematic experience.
