Which Pirates of the Caribbean movie was the best?

Get tired of AWE, then watch CBP and AWE one day. Then it'll be fair.

And I'll still claim AWE is better... there's nothing wrong with post-movie bliss... especially when that bliss states that AWE is much darker, deeper, and better than CBP because I'm tired of CBP and bored of it now but know I will enjoy AWE much longer.

ha! i think the third time you sit through the Calysto plot and you start asking yourself... what does this have to do with anything in the end'... you MIGHT find yourself tiring of AWE.

Just saw At Worlds End not too long ago.
Its definately the best and darkest of the trilogy.

Only the first one was fun. Two and three sucked. Three didn't suck nearly as much as Two, but it still wasn't good.

Good point. That has happened to me as well. I remember it happened to me with Batman Returns. I walked out of the theater thinking, "most awesome movie ever." Then, I re-watched B89 and realized it was better.

Their quality goes reverse chronologically.

Black Pearl is obscenely overrated, other than Jack and Barbossa nothing in it works, Will and Liz were far, far more intriuging characters in the sequels, Davy is the best thing about these movies and he doesn't enter until DMC, the score, cinematography...hell EVERYTHING is weakest in Black Pearl.
I can't believe how much undeserved praise that boring excuse for a popcorn film has dumped all over it.

COTBP.

I have now seen all three.

COTBP-9.5/10: A classic swashbuckler in sync with classic Erroyl Flynn fare such sa Robin Hood and of course Captain Blood (which was a heavy influence on several sight gags and action bits in the first POTC). But it was Johnny Depp's self-depcrating performance and incredibly nuanced comedy role combine with a superb supporting cast including Johnathan Pryce, Jack Davenport and headlining Geoffrey Rush that gave it an incredbily pleasing atmosphere and presence. Bloom was okay as the boring young hero and it found a star in young Knightley, who I personally think is growing int oa very good actress (despite what people say).

I also think it was just a lot of fun and the action scenes were old fashioned fun without the CGI aspects and special effects dominating what made it fun.

The sequels were souless cash-ins and while again the strong supporting cast returned albeit somewhat wasted (coughNorringtoncough) and new additions such as the brilliant stroke of Bill Nighy as Davy Jones and Stellan Skaagard(sp?) as Will's father worked. But they were driven by special effects and action set pieces with only Johnny Depp's performance holding it together.

While the first was breezy fun and the perfect action popcorn flick for the summer the sequels were weighed down by a self-important tone that suffered from a Matrix sequel complex and were overly long with paperthin plots that become purposefully too convoluted for their own good (particularly the second).

So:

COTBP: 9.5/10
DMC: 6.5/10
AWE: 6.5/10

P.S. AWE may be the darkest (I'd actually say DMC is the bleakest in story but AWE is the more downbeat) but that does not mean it is the deepest.

In fact I'd call it the most shallow of the three movies. The movies are light popcorn fare. Or should be. COTBP was good because of how fun it was. The self-imposed "serious" tone of AWE and attempt for a sad or "bittersweet" ending was more unsatisfying than it was a revelation. Some material is not meant to be dark or end in such a downbeat way. The first two movies were more enjoyable as they played as fun movies that were self-depcrecating while the thrid suffers from a Matrix Reloaded complex and thinks that if it tries to end on a down note that it is more mature, adult and better. Instead it just delivers an ending that does not fit the trilogy and fails to live up to the first one's conclusion.

These sequels were never planned and were not going to be made. So the succcess of them is to see if they add to the first one or deepen it or expand upon its ending. The end of COTBP is far more satisfactory and fitting than the ending of AWE. At the end of the day AWE's climax felt empty and hallow save for Bill Nighy's Davy Jones. AS it was all too much CGI and not enough substance. And the ending just basically either went back to square one (Barbossa has Jack's ship and he is alone on the seas) or attempted to be thought provoking or deep but ultimately failed with Will and Elizabeth.

The measure of these sequels are if they have the right to exist and I think the first movie's ending is superior and thus it works better as a stand alone film and thus the sequels were not needed. The sequels detract from the original. And there existence must thusly be purefly for profit at the box office.

1) How come we never heard of anything about Calysto in the previous two installments? How come she brought back Barossa for the pirate lord meeting but didn't do the same for Sao Feng when he died? Did she even matter in the end?

2) Why were the pirate lords only got their mention in AWE, when DMC and AWE were shot simulataneously? And how come Jack Sparrows is a pirate lord? Weren't he just a crew of Barossa in CotBP?

3) This one is more of a complain than anything else. When "king" Swann declared war against the British armada, I thought the pirates would engage the far-superior Brits in a duel of life and death. Instead, only Black Pearl & Flying Dutchmen battled in the whirlwind, and thus the climatic battle was rather ho-hum to me.

And Chow Yun Fat's character was wasted in the expense of Elizabeth Swann. Seriously, they could've cast an unknown because Sao Feng's screentime was so short. And at a near 3 hour running time, my patience was running thin by the third act. I think Spider-man 3 was a more enjoyable movie, as flawed as it is. AWE was, by and large, a let-down.

Originally, Jack was the captain of the Black Pearl and Barbossa was his first mate.

It wasn't until Barbossa organized a mutiny against Jack that he became a Captain as well.

^ That's sitll shoddy storytelling. If part III is the conclusion of part II than its storyline should be ste up. We knew about Gondor and Denethor for example in both FOTR and TTT before we saw or read ROTK.

It's last second introductions like that that are annoying. As is the fact that for all their build up Calypso and the Pirate Lords added nothing to the proceedings other than an "epic tone" and more special effects.

Okay Okay bring up good points but my patinece was wearing thin throughout this whole movie for spiderman 3 and it was too long abd boring and the ending was so jsut not fitting
