it's New York, New York's nickname IS "Gotham". And that's also were the first Batman stories took place.

Heck, there is a "Statue of Justice" in Gotham.

Um, Chicago. . . All the license plates in BB are Illinois plates. . .

That's because it was filmed in Chicago. That doesn't mean Gotham City is Chicago in the real world.

NYC is definitely Gotham there is no refuting it. For no other city is as diverse and densely populated. If you ask a foreigner to name the biggest (commercially, popularity, business-wise,etc) city in the U.S., they automatically say NYC. The same goes in the comic world, the city that stands out is Gotham. Therefore Gotham and NYC are one.
(I may be biased because I live in brooklyn)

I'd Say its a mix between New York and Chicago But mostly Chicago? But others say that its New Jersey and Manhattan.

Gotham was a reference for New York well before Batman existed, believe it or not. So, knowing that, I would have to say that Gotham was specifically based from the idea of a New York-like city. And... you can read more here for yourself: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-got1.htm

Turns out the usage of Gotham could elaborate to mean a 'city of fools'.... gives a new twist on understand Batman's Gotham.

It always has been said it is a "New York City on Steroids"!

Gotham, a nickname for New York City, was first used by Washington Irving in 1807 in his satirical periodical, Salmagundi.

Im pretty sure Kane told us that himself in older interviews.

lol, what about Detroit, MI?

Personally I think Gotham City is a mixture of all major eastcoast cities, including but not limited to Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, New York, Brooklyn, New Jersey, Philly and Chi town. It's got a little bit of all of them, but its main ingredient is most likely New Jersey...

I think my favorite idea is Chicago tho. But maybe only cause I was born there >.>

That's not true. Most foreigners actually think of California first. Primarily Hollywood, secondarily Los Angeles. I know from experience of talking to people online whom where not from America.

In my experiences with those foreign to the U.S., they have all said NYC was the "biggest" city. Sorry if our statistics do not match, but I still believe my previous post to be correct.

Muskogee, Oklahoma only because It would be freakin' awesome to live in Gotham, but then again, you'd have to deal with a lot of craziness.

If you going off of looks I say NYC, maybe Chicago. But if you're judging by the feel of the city, then I say Detroit. It's got all the corruption and crime of Gotham.

my thoughts exactly. Detroit is currently on the number one spot for most corrupt city in the US, taking the place of St. Louis MO which was bumped to number 2 a couple years ago.

Detroit crime rates mixed with new york and add some serial killers, the sicilian mafia, and a man obsessed with ridding it of crime.

ahhhh.... being from NY i just had to chime in here...

Gotham City is most definately inspired by and if not is supposed to be New York City.. Google it, Wiki it... and it sucks that i cant remember which comic its from but in a certain Batman comic from many many years ago in the back there were many scetches and designs and passages from different either the artists or writers explaining the inspiration for Gotham and its influences from NY.. it explained how alot of the architexture in Gotham was directly influenced by NY as well as the use of Gargoils on alot of the buildings and where the use of Gargoils even stem from... something about how Gargoils were place atop of buildings to protect the city and scare away evil spirits or energy or something like that.. how ironic huh? ..go figure lol

When you're walking through Baltimore City at night... it sure feels dangerous, and a lot like Gotham City.
