Who do you think is the best american director? right now

Well, Nolan has duel citizenship, so he's kind of American.

trying to hoard all the good stuff..? :woot:

^your avvy discredits any statement you make

nolan hasnt direct enough to get my vote anyways

Agreed. He's a rising star, but he hasn't done anything I would dare call "extraordinary." The Dark Knight was a great film, filmed beautifully... but I really want to see him make something outside of that particular genre which I can say the same about. Hopefully his next films will be what I need to see in order to call him a "great" filmmaker.

Nolan needs to direct something that's a little...brighter before I start to call him a great director. If dark and moody is his style, that's cool, but even Burton does goofy and campy occasionally.

To me there are a number of directors that do different types of movie very well.

^washing your hands, Pilate?

:oldrazz:

Terry Gilliam
Coen Bros.
David Fincher
Steven Spielberg
Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese
Steven Spielberg
David Fincher
Micheal Mann

Forest Whitaker, barring First Daughter.

I think you need to go Steven Spielberg on this. Have his more recent movies been up to par with his 80's and 90's work? No, but the man makes movies that have wide appeal, and are artistic in their own right.

He's the best right now, IMO.

I have to go with Spielberg. He still makes relevant, poignant, entertaining, and spectacular films. I would list a few others, but this thread isn't about lists. It's about the best (singular) director. Definitely Spielberg.

Ron Howard has produced a lot of good movies, both in terms of blockbusting and quality.

I really don't recall him doing a bad movie and I think that says something.

Nolan is great, but I don't consider him American so he's out.

I almost have to go with Clint Eastwood. He's been fantastic this decade.

You obviously havent seen Memento or The Prestige then. TDK was also spectacular, as was BB. Insomnia is his worst movie, yet its still brilliant. He is more than rising star.

As for American, Got to, and always will be James Cameron for me. Though Spielberg is superb also.
