Ultimately, whoever they pick , they have to tell a new story and give the audience something new with regards to a Superman film.

After 80 odd years, another retread of the Krypton origin , growing up in Smallville, even having Lex or Zod as the main villain again, would be a mistake.

People know who Superman is and what he stands for. The question is, what is the new story that the filmmakers tell with the collective knowledge that audiences around the world already have about the Superman character.

What's Clark/ Superman's journey or goal in this film, and which new villain best represents an obstacle and threat to that.

I've always seen Superman as existing in a sci-fi type of world (especially since STAS is one of my favorite versions of the Superman mythos, which went a fair bit into the sci-fi elements), which makes me think of plenty of directors who've worked in sci-fi before and actually have a prior relationship with WB:

- Denis Villeneuve: there's no doubt that Villeneuve is a talented director. Every film of his I've seen has been exceptional. While not all of his films have been sci-fi, he's done it enough that I'd be intrigued to see what he'd come up with for a Superman movie. I have a feeling that if he did a Superman movie, it'd be an epic adventure. Villains I see being likely in a Villeneuve movie: Brainiac, Manchester Black, or Intergang. Or one of the alien space-based ones.

- James Wan: no doubt that Wan has a great relationship with WB now, especially coming after Aquaman. He definitely knows how to make a crowdpleasing action flick (i.e. Aquaman and the Fast & Furious movies) but I've always seen him as a horror director/producer since he's been responsible for some of the better horror movies from the past 10 years. That makes me wonder how his experience with horror might be able to be used to make a different type of movie featuring Superman. Villains I see likely in a Wan movie: Doomsday, Parasite, Livewire, Silver Banshee, Atomic Skull, Grundy, Lobo, Bizarro, or Cyborg Superman.

- Leigh Whannell: Wan's collaborative partner from some of his horror movies is a solid writer/director on his own. I don't know if he's worked with WB before, but he seems like the type of director likely to work with them. Given his past two movies (The Invisible Man and Upgrade), both of which I really liked, I'd be really interested in his take on a Superman movie. Villains I see likely in a Whannell movie: Parasite, Metallo, Livewire, Intergang, or Cyborg Superman. I'd definitely pay good money to see Whannell make a Superman movie with Parasite AND Metallo!

- Gareth Edwards: between his 2014 Godzilla movie and Rogue One (which are the only movies of his I've seen), it's hard to say how much "vision" he might have for a Superman movie, but I'd at least expect him to make a solid action- and drama-oriented Superman flick. Seems to be a solid filmmaker, and if nothing else I'd expect him to make a "safe" & relatively crowd-pleasing movie. Villains I see likely in an Edwards movie: Brainiac, Darkseid, Lex Luthor w/ Metallo, Doomsday, or Cyborg Superman.

- Doug Liman: IMO one of the underrated directors who knows sci-fi and how to make lower-budget movies. Along the lines of Gareth Edwards, I think he'd make a relatively safe crowd-pleasing movie too. I could see him likely to use any of Superman's traditional villains, but probably more likely to use the tech-based ones (Brainiac, Metallo, Intergang, Lex Luthor, or Livewire).

- Joseph Kosinki: another underrated director with previous sci-fi experience & low budget filmmaking. Don't think he's worked with WB before, but certainly more likely to work with them as opposed to Marvel. Also see him more likely to use Superman's tech-based villains.

- Alex Garland: he definitely hasn't worked with WB before, but damn if I wouldn't pay to see a Superman movie made by him! I could totally see him making a movie with Metallo, Parasite, or Brainiac.

While Denis Villeneuve is probably the one director I'd be most excited with out of this list, Alex Garland is definitely my #2 choice here. And while he definitely wouldn't make a crowd-pleasing movie, there's no doubt in my mind Garland would make one hell of a unique movie if given the chance. Plus I really want to see Brainiac finally done on something other than the small screen (TV), and I feel like either of them would do justice to the character.

Aside from that, I kinda have to admit I'd be really interested to see what Leigh Whannell or James Wan would do if allowed to take a Superman movie into more of a horror direction. Parasite, Metallo, and/or Silver Banshee getting a proper big-screen treatment in a horror-style movie would be glorious too!

A lot of those guys' styles are generally more heavy/cerebral tonally than I'd want for a Supes reboot, but Doug Liman's a great shout, imo. With a good script, he could make an awesome Supes movie. Adding him to my list.

I think that adding a horror element to a Superman movie would be a mistake. I know that there’s a definite sci fi aspect to the character, but I would lean more sci fi/fantasy versus sci fi/horror. I’m thinking Explorers-Super 8-Star Wars and less Alien.

Joseph Kosinski directing with Brainiac as the villain would be sick.

If they do a Superman sequel and the villain is anyone but Brainiac, I am going to be so upset. He is long overdue.

Manchester Black is the worst. Just do Magog in a Kingdom Come movie with Keaton Bats.

Really I love Chester, he is an incredibly powerful antihero who challenges superman both physically and morally, he also serves as an allegory for the dark, violent, punisher-like heroes that over populated comicbooks in the 90's and were supposed to render superman 'irrelevant', yet Superman is still here and those so called heroes aren't.
I think Magag leans abit too heavy on the biblical side for my taste and I prefer to see Action #775 over Kingdom Come any day of the week and twice on sunday. In Kingdom Come Superman initially turned tail and run like a wimp while in Action #775 he stood his ground and kicked **s from the get go.

Would personally love to see Cavill & JJ work as actor and director together with their joint passion & love for the character.

Of those options, Miller.

Either Abrams or (in an ideal world) James Mangold
