out of all the comicbooks and movies together who do u think has made the most money ? marvel or DC ?

I would have to go with Marvel.

Marvel has had more success with movies such as Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Expect the trend to continue with Spider-Man 3. DC has the oppourtunity to beat Marvel though if they just focus on the major characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. and keep the quality top notch like they have been with Batman Begins and Superman Returns.

Marvel is currently the leader in comic book sales, often barely beating DC in market share. Personally, I think DC deserves to be the leader in this category, because DC's books offer a bit more variety and I personally tend to prefer DC's characters and comics over Marvel's. And you really can't stop people from buying absolute crap like New Avengers, Wolverine: Origns, Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four, the Ultimates 2, and the soon to come Mighty Avengers.

Marvel's video games such as X-Men Legends, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, Spider-Man the Movie, Spider-Man 2: The Game, Marvel vs. Capcom series, Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, the Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. On the other hand, while most of the games suck, Marvel's video games are way better than DC's which are absolute garbage.

In terms of licensing, Marvel again beats DC with the numerous toylines they have, and honestly, I see a lot more shoes, backpacks, toys, etc. of Marvel characters than DC's characters. Marvel deservedly deserves this because they're more aggressive with getting their characters out there than DC is (which is owned by Time Warner which has other money makers unlike Marvel). Also, I love the Marvel Legends Icons line (I'd probally get the normal Marvel Legends but I just started collecting and they're are way too many out there to get a decent collection started these days)

theres more dc movie of course but i think marvel is ahead of them with there bussiness

True.

Marvel has experienced only one humiliating bomb, which is Elektra.

DC has had to deal with Steel, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Batman & Robin (technically not a bomb, but killed the original Batman franchise), Supergirl, and Catwoman.

Also take into account that Superman Returns, despite being an awesome film and being a million times better than X-Men the Last Stand, underperformed by at least $100 million in the box office and should have been the #1 film of the year.

I liked Elektra

yeah, suuuuree:whatever:

marvel.
Higher grossing flicks
Higher toy sales
Higher book sales
Higher game sales
Better reviews on all those fronts.
I think they have higher trade sales to but im not certain on comics over all.Marvels lisensces are alot more valuble to,dc has lost of cool stuff but thats because rights are cheaper due to low demand.

ALSO
marvels exclusives sales have been alot more consistant and often higher then DC's.

I thought Marvel had more movies...doing a head count I am incorrect.

DC is more successful on television, what with Smallville and the DCAU though.

Yup I love all DC cartoons they have a ton of cartoons to watch out there..and Smallville

I would think since DC has been out there longer than Marvel, that DC would be the leader over time.

are we only counting recent stuff....cause I seem to recall the Christopher Reeve movies doing extremely well, Batman with Michael Keaton was very hot until Batman and Robin, Batman the animated series was hot as was the toy tie ins, Superman the animated series did well also, Krypto is also doing well as is/was Justice League, Teen Titans and the direct to dvd movies with them. Lois and Clark was hot until they jumped the shark and married them off. Sure Marvel got media attention for unmasking spidey but it was nothing compared to killing Robin and Superman(they did a skit on SNL about Superman's funeral). Constantine did well and is about to have sequel done. Batman Begins is going the same route. How much is DC raking in with the massive Superman dvd release they didnt this past Tuesday???

In terms of overall, I'm pretty sure it's Marvel.

Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are in the top 10 grossing movies of all time in the US, getting over 750000$ combined in box office totals. This doesn't even start in with the DVD sales, toy sales, or any other sales. Now, the fact that DC does have around 10 different movies within the top 200 boxoffice all time may want you to say that DC is overall more the money maker, but we're just going off two of the dozens of Marvel Movies.

And afterall, the Movie lines are most grossing out of all the media and things they sell.

You said theres more DC movies than Marvel....... Noooooo

Marvel has made more money than DC of course. But I like DC's heroes and movies better than marvel.

i'd have though marvel would be tops too...

and i know alot of folk knock marvel...but to me DC is really boring at the moment..infinite crisis was no where near as good as marvels civil war has been and is in my eyes...i have ditched alot of DC's stuff recently..i only get justice league and superman/action comics now...

I go with Marvel, they just seem to be doing great in every area of buisness. Their Marvel Legend line of toys sell like hotcakes, their tv series have been popular and even the old 90's ones rerun still, their comics top the sales charts, and also they do well in many other venues like statues and video games.

As for Movies it's tough to tell. I think Marvel's had more movies the general audience knows about, but DC might have had more movies overall if you include the lesser known ones like Supergirl and the bombs like Catwoman.

I don't know if they count as Marvel, but Men in Black I'm pretty sure was owned by Marvel at the time it was made (hence the Capt. America comment, and mention of marvel in the intro) so probably made some money off of it. They also have the 3 Blade movies, 3 X-Men movies, 2 Spiderman movies with another coming out, Daredevil, Hulk, Punisher movies (an old and new one), F4, Howard the Duck :woot:. They've also had TV movies as well.

That's a good list, but I don't think it's complete. i can think a few movies off the top of my head you don't have listed there. There were a few Punisher movies, The Phantom... I'm sure there are more if I think about it.

I would say in the History of both companies, D.C. has made a lot more money. They have been around a lot longer, and have had a lot more endeavors. Superman alone has probably made more money over the lifetime of the character than all the marvel brands put together. I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but Superman is one of the most recognized and most licensed brands in the world.

Edit: If we're speaking ONLY of Movies, then it could go either way.

Nice list but you forgot The Shadow and The Phantom for DC and the Conan movies witch was owned by Marvel when they were done and Sheena for Marvel back in 1984 but I still think that DC has made morvies and more money due to their being longer in the business.

The difference is Marvel makes much more profit from their movies than DC does. Most of the profit from a DC will go to WB, it's parent company.

currently adding up right now.....I only counted straight Marvel/DC properties...The Phantom and the Shadow arent DC properties. Conan while having marvel comics doesnt count. I also only counted movies that made it to the theaters so the Dolph Lungren Punisher movie wouldnt count.

Honestly tho it wasn't that huge of a time length inbetween when DC came out before Marvel. Also back them comics sold for 5-10 cents, and didn't see for entire dollars until a long time later. They may have had a jump start on cash by the time Marvel came in, but Marvel more or less has outsold DC for a decent amount of time now in comics.

From Wiki -

Marvel-
"Marvel Comics was founded by established pulp-magazine publisher Martin Goodman in 1939 as an eventual group of subsidiary companies under the umbrella name Timely Comics. Its first publication was Marvel Comics #1 (Oct. 1939)"

DC-
"The corporation is an amalgamation of several companies. National Allied Publications was founded by Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1934"

So while DC is older, it's not like decades, only 5 years, and 5 years of comics selling for nickles. BTW wasn't sure of their exact creation dates myself, I knew DC came out in the 30's, but thought Marvel was the 40's, guess I was wrong.

Well, the thread starter didn't specify "Who has made more money from major motion pictures?" so you would have to include those in your list. If the company made any money from them (which they would have, at least in licensing) then they go to the total.
