Sequels Why Did Superman Leave?

I'm not looking for a definitive answer, but a discussion on the subject. As for the time I'm asking, it shouldn't matter. We were discussing stuff like this on here, years before the script, or even singer was attached to the project. So I don't think having an open discussion on why superman left, framed within the narrative of the universe we have defined before us, isn't that much of a stretch.
but knowing either way won't enhance the viewing experience at this point in time since there is no information on a sequel.

so i ask why bring it up.

i mean fair point they don't actually say why he left and it's good you picked that up.

he might have gone to take a dump or perhaps wanted to see if he could get cooler material/colours for his costume...

he could have been searching for other survivors or believed that maybe it may have all been a mistake. The only film it really affects is the second superman film which he states he wouldn't let the world down again to the president, so a good enough explanation for his long trip i guess could be asked for but meh...

wouldn't simply assuming something to put your mind at ease suffice?

It's nothing more complicated than this-

He goes back to the remains of Krypton to see if there are any survivors. It's as simple as that. Liken it to someone heading back to New Orleans after the flood to find missing relatives, etc.

Whether or not you deem it good storytelling, that's the story in a nutshell.

There are several scenes cut from the movie that better explain his trip. One plot point being that Lex was the architect behind these false claims of life on Krypton, so he could get Supes out of his..hair, at least long enough to be freed from prison and establish his wealth and new plot. Why this was cut out is unbeknownest to me.

It has also been speculated (by fans) that the cut footage of his "return to Krypton" is being purposely held back (as it's not on the dvd) for use later in Man of Steel (maybe he was followed home by something..) or simply a director's cut DVD of Returns.
