im sorry if i shouldnt have created a new thread for this, but i looked around and couldnt find a place that seemed right to put it. so anyway why does he still wear the mask, if everyone knows who he is theres no need for him to wear it anymore and all it really does is mess up his vision right, aside from concealing his identity that is, which he doesnt need to bother with anymore. are there any reasons for him to keep the mask on?
i actually think it would be cool to see him do stuff in costume but without the mask, it would change up his new stupid costume a bit.

plus then maybe, like some fans have wanted, Jim Lee could come onto the book and do the art, because as someone else here has made me aware he doesnt like drawing spidey cuz his face is concealed, well that would be problem solved, of course this would only last until the eventual mind wipe everyone is going to get at some point

Because he would look stupid without the mask...and it would be more bastardization of the character.

^^

Indeed.

Sure Marvel has ****ed up royally but why do so more? And I could care less if Jim Lee doesn't like drawing Spidey because of the mask, there are better artists out there anyway.

Why does Iron Man still wear his helmet? Everyone knows he's Tony Stark. Didn't people know Captain America was Steve Rogers for a while there? Why did he still wear the mask? It's part of the costume, it looks cool, that's why. There's not even a real question here...

Ever tried to swing down buildings at speeds that match a car? You'd probably get some bugs on the eyepieces.... without a mask... well, getting bugs stuck in your eyes might be worse than getting them on your eypieces... but since Spidey now likes to eat brains or "suck lifeforces" well the mask is not needed anymore...

Well, right now he has a bunch of tech stuff in his suit, like listening in on police radio transmissions, or heatvision, toxin filters, stuff that wouldn't work without the mask...

And more people would complain about it if he didnt wear it.

I think it's just because the mask is Peter's shield. Even though everyone knows he's just Peter parker under the mask, he still feels stronger and more confident when he's behind the mask of Spider-Man. He can crack jokes, talk smack, and be brave when his face doesn't show. It's hard to tell when Spidey's scared to death with his mask on...he probably wants to keep that advantage.

Also, I liek the explanation about getting bugs stuck in his eye while web-slinging....that probably has alot to do with it. Bugs could also fly down his throat, causing him to choke in mid-air during a battle. Also, he could get wind-burn on those chilly winter days....

everybody knows steve rogers is captain america right? anyway spider-man rarely refers to his costume as such - he calls it a uniform. You can't **** with the uniform people!

Yup. See the John Ney Rieber/John Cassady run on the MK: Captain America series collected in the trade "The New Deal". He basically does it as an attempt to make terrorists come after him instead of taking out vengeance on the American people.

Good answer, good answer!
It's to complete the costume. Think how many villains continue wearing masks after their identities are exposed. But could you imagine how they'd look without it?

That too.

Can we please stick to one abomination at a time? This is the "Spidey makes an idiotic move by unmasking" thread, not the "Let's turn Spidey into some kind of monster" thread. That was last month.

Hey! Let's leave Mr. Blonsky out of this!!!
I was exposing Marvel's dumbassness... Making Peter a Venom like freak then revealing his face to the world... at least Peter has the decency of hiding his monsterlike features under a mask... he could scare little children... oh wait he looks like a normal guy... I'll stick with the insect deterrent theory, and the you can't see how scared I am tactical advantage...
At least I didn't mention the red and gold aberration... Kent did... indirectly...

agreed

For all the good the mask is, and reasons given, Spidey many times has also complained about the mask/suit...makes his face/body sweaty...it bunches, rips, hard to fix.....when he is sick he coughs/ralphs into it, i dunno, over the years there have been times he's complained about having to wear it for various reasons. So, this is his chance to TRULY redefine himself since he is out of the closet.

I agree it is pointless to wear it now. I've said it before tho, they might as well have him battle in speedos, sock warmers, vintage Magic Johnson Lakers Jersey and red and blue headband...make him look as dumb as possible...since they already have.

Basically, the costume is a security blanket now. My word!...They've turned Spider-Man into Linus!!....carrying around his "blanky" to help him feel secure...although he acts more like a poor man's Charlie Brown. And i guess, Iron Man is now his "Lucy". Always pulling the ball out from him, bullying him...making a mockery of him, when all Spidey wants is to have a nice simple life with his wife MJ, (the little red haired girl)....but Joey Q wants to pull even her out from under him too, so little Charlie Parker can sit by the mailbox day in and out, wishing he'd get a letter from her, but we all know he never will...and since he doesn't have his Spidey identity to escape from his troubles, he'll ultimately run back to Iron Man's psychiatrist stand and pay a nickle so Iron Man can give him more bad advice like the last session where he told Charlie Parker to unmask himself in front of the whole gang.

Hey, that's the kind of direction you get for a nickle!

All Pete needs now is a beagle. Joe Q. will work that in after he kills the little red haired girl I am sure.

And as per the importance of the mask/identity....look at all the times Spidey fought Green Goblin (Norman) for instance... and his MAIN concern often was that GG KNEW his secret identity and how WORRIED he was of someone or anyone close to him getting hurt.

Often the battles ended with Norman getting amnesia, (again), and/or somehow seemingly forgetting Spidey's identity. Then Spidey would ALWAYS be so relieved...but also he'd be antsy in the back of his mind, wondering when his enemy (singular) might rememeber this bit of info again.

So, why would he "give it up" to the world (big time plural)since this has ALWAYS been a major concern. Always.

The mask now is a moot point, sadly. Until the whole world magically "forgets" everything that has happened lately in Marvel land.

I've wondered if, under the Registration Act, have they given any thought to wiping out the traditional costumes & dressing everybody in a SHIELD uniform, w/maybe a badge to identify them?
NOT THAT I'M IN FAVOR OF THIS.

why does spidey still wear the mask?

In hopes that the Writers will come to their senses and make his identity secrete again.

because it's easier to draw the mask than to draw Pete's face?

haha....yeh, WRITERS these days can't get a handle on marriages and ARTISTS can't draw faces....i am sure that's what Joey Q. would say.
