Comics Why does Wolverine wear a costume?

I always thought that he wore a costume for protection....sure he can heal from wounds but back in the day it would take him a while to heal....so why not cover up the especially soft parts. Sure he can recover from a shotgun to the groin...but why would he want to????

How would spandex protect him from anything? Wolverine's costumes end up in shreds even more often than Spider-Man's do.
