Of the Spider-man movies ... (Wow, I'm going out on a limb here, and I hope I don't get flamed or butchered in the process ... just my opinion, so stay with me.)

The reason why Spider-man 3 is the best Spider-man film to me isn't because it was entertaining, it wasn't because of Venom, it wasn't for the black suit, or because it was fun, or more like the comic book than any of the other movies. Throw all that out the window.

The reason it's the best is because Spider-man 3 is the first super hero film to have the balls to do something truly innovative.

The entire theme and statement of the movie is FORGIVENESS. How unique is that? Its kind of a put off at first, but if you buy into, it becomes a revolutionary idea for this type of movie. That's NEVER been done before. It gives the film a very unique sensibility.

With superhero movies it just gets you pumped up for the comfort zone, yet potentially cliche good guy v/s bad guy routine. This movie questions all those motives, theories and stories. Villains that essentially were good people at one point, who went bad, and instead of being so black and white, we see our hero have the HEART to forgive people who have wronged him. THAT is awesome. And by god if they had just cut a few things out, and focused more on their strong points thematically, from various actors, and character subplots ... this film could've been EVEN BETTER. Spider-man 3 as of right now is officially underrated. And once you guys come around, I'll be the one standing here saying "I told you so..."

I understand what you are saying; however, IMO, it's hard for me to say it was the best of the three, because the story itself was the worse of the three. The film was entertaining in its own right, I give you that; but the greatest of the three..... I can't buy that. Good post though.

i think its the best for the story and the characters i feel for them since the first two films now and the action was great as usual but venom was very shy we saw too little of him for how hyped up he was on youtube and stuff....but the emotion was there for me but i didn't like how it ended sad i felt kinda bad walking out of it for that...but still overall its the best one yet

Stop being ignorant. Spiderman is incredibly popular already. It was bolstered by two sequels, one of which is second only to Batman Begins as the best comic book movie of all time. It was a sure fire success no matter what. Throw in that you got Venom in the movie, it just adds to the hype. Of course everyone who is everyone will go see the movie.

I really loved this movie. At first I didnt know what to think because it was kinda different from the first two. But I'm going to see it a third time this weekend. I dont get why people are bashing it that much. Sure I would have liked to see more Venom..but I mean..It wasnt the WORST movie ever!

Ock treatment means making him sympathetic when it's not necessary. Pete was friends with 3 of his 5 villians, and he was cool with sandman at the end. Brock's basically the only person he is always at odds with and that relationship wasn't fully developed enough. Also, if we were to ever see the Lizard it would be the case too. I don't know why Raimi can't just show a villian being evil for no other reason than because he is. We don't need to sympathize with every character in the movie! Unfortunately, Raimi painted himself into a corner with venom the way he portrayed Ock. Ock's relationship with his "arms" was basically what Brock and Pete should've had with the symbiote. Too bad it was wasted on Ock.

I think it was ok that they did it with Ock, but not with Sandman. It just doesn't work. The Lizard is something different altogether because he can't control himself once he transforms.

I agree that the whole forgiveness thing was pretty original, but they just crammed too much crap into the movie and didn't execute that storyline very well.

Nothing was crammed. X-3 was crammed. This movie gave us over 2.5 hours and placed everything (except Venom) very well.

imho SM2 is better than BB but that is an argument for another day

The more I analyze this movie, the more I like it. I admire Raimi for both his boldness and his moxy. He gave us a movie that doesn’t feel the need to hold the viewers hand or the need to connect every dot. He assumes a viewer is intelligent enough to shift through inconsequential matters and that’s remarkably refreshing. He doesn’t feel the need to waste exposition on the nature of the Sandman or Venom’s powers. Just watch, learn and enjoy. Watching Peter’s first experience with the black suit and the intoxication it provides leads to a crisp and complex internal struggle that plays out masterfully. Peter becomes addicted and starts to look to the suit for a boost and even to overcome insecurities. If you’re smart enough, you pick up these nuances and you enjoy the film even more.

There’s little doubt that Raimi has made an outstanding movie that flows perfectly and draws upon the work he’s already done with this franchise. Supporting characters from the previous films are used with surgical yet powerful precision. Aunt May’s few scenes are vital as she continues to serve as Peter’s moral compass. Even the landlord and Ursula from the second film serve a poignant purpose and add to the rich depth Raimi has built. It’s obvious that Peter has won over the cranky landlord because Pete’s a likable man of character. Peter’s taking advantage of Ursula not only serves to illustrate his dark turn but adds more perfect humor to the film. Raimi also manages to make the most out of the one new non-villain character he introduces in Gwen. Not only is she integral to the story but her early interaction reinforces everything we know about Peter. Despite being a near intellectual genius, he knows little about relationships and affairs of the heart. Gwen serves as an antagonist to MJ but manages to remain likeable throughout. Even Harry’s butler Bernard steps up and helps this movie to flow.

To retain a crisp yet intelligent movie, knowing what to omit is an important as what to show. I don’t need to see Peter looking for any remnants of the black suit after he recovers from the trauma of separating himself from it. Transitioning to him in the shower then on with the story is perfect. I’m smart enough to understand why MJ breaks up with Peter on the bridge. She truly fears for his life because Harry not only wields incredible strength but he’s clearly maniacally twisted and has the money and resources to more then follow up on his threat. I also understand that Sandman isn’t the sharpest tool in the drawer. He’s every bit the loser his wife accuses him of being. He teams with Venom because he knows that Spider-Man really tried to kill him. As is the case with the Uncle Ben robbery, he clearly didn’t think about the consequences of his actions. After partaking in the battle royal, it makes perfect sense that he would simply quit fighting after confronted with those consequences. Again, it’s masterful work.

What’s really remarkable is that Raimi manages to play both sides of the fence. He offers tremendous wild action for those not smart enough to follow the intricate character motivation and development that’s been unfolding for three films. He also allows the viewer to pick up the little nuances and enjoy this movie on another level. Fans already know why Venom displays spider powers or why he doesn’t set off his Spider-Sense or why Sandman can become hard enough to smash concrete. Non-fans don’t need to deal with explanations because it offers nothing to the story itself. It’s a masterful juggling act. Knowing that you can’t please everybody, Raimi made the film on his advanced level. If you can follow along and appreciate the movie on his level then, great. If not, tough luck. Just enjoy the action and leave the complexities to people who aren’t interested in nitpicking the flaws that appear only in their own mind. For the rest of us, this movie is a real treat and it truly deserves every box office record it’s already earned.
