Wolverine wasn't as bad as some say, yes, I agree. I also agree that a Wolverine 2 does have potential to be much better than the 1st. However, do we really need a Wolverine 2?
If only to patch up some of the plotholes created by Wolverine 1, then i say they should go for it.
And i absolutely hated X1, it was X2 that made me fall in love with this franchise. If Wolverine is gonna follow this same path, then again, they should go for it.
I would think Omega Red would be the logical choice to be the next villain. Maybe we'll get both him and Shingen.
Never on all counts.
You MIGHT get a first class which does all of them at once.
I was really hoping they make an origin movie for every X-Men character there is which will spawn pointless yet entertaining spinoffs upon spinoffs for every character they introduced in those origin movies. Damn.
Omega Red doesn't work with the Japanese story. It just doesn't really fit. If anyone would be added Silver Samurai is the only logical choice, because he's already connected to that storyline.
Omega Red is associated with the Hand. Remember his debut in X-Men #4? You could put Omega Red anywhere. They can put Cyclops, the Blob, Emma Frost, and Gambit in the Weapon X program, but they cant put Omega Red in Japan? You dont think they're gonna try to cram a couple of different storylines together?
Spider-Fan said:Omega Red is a Russian villain. If you're doing a Japan film (which is a stupid idea after this movie...it won't be better sadly), I think you have to stick with Silver Samurai.
He's not powerful enough to be the main villain. If Sabretooth wasnt then Silver Samurai definitely isnt. Liev Schreiber said he may have to play Sabretooth again becouse of the success of the movie last night on Lettermann, so who knows.
Wow, it seems so good. I have to read it.It pretty much single-handedly turned Wolverine into the character he is today. It introduced the idea of the "failed Samurai" of Wolverine. The man who tried to follow the way of peace and honor and control, but one who can't quite control his animal side. It also was the main story that really explored his battle with his animal side. Claremont had explored it before, but this story was the one where he really went in-depth with it.
The way it was set up was very nice. Both Wolverine's love interest reflect his battling inner self. There is Mariko, his first love (and truest love in my opinon) who is also the daughter of Shingin, his main adversary in the story. Mariko is more innocent and kind, and Wolverine wants to try to change himself for her. Control his animal side and violent ways.
Yukio is the girl he meets during the story, and he is attracted to her because she is very much like him. She enjoys danger, is attracted to it, and one could say almost seeks it out.
I also love it because Shingin is such a great villain. He is the father of Mariko and a major crime lord in Japan. He forces Mariko to marry against her will (but she will not seek a divorce because in her culture it would dishonorable, even though her husband beats her.) This puts Wolverine at odds with him. Shingin challenges Wolverine to a "friendly" dual with wooden practice swords. Unbeknost to Wolverine, Shingin is a martial arts expert. While he fights Wolverine he strikes him in calculated pressure points and nerve clusters that would have killed him were he a normal man. It forces Wolverine to pop his claws and turn it into a real battle, but it also completely dishonors him in Mariko's eyes, because she didn't realize the blows Shingin dealt to Wolverine would have killed him without his healing factor.
Shingin proceeds to savagely beat Wolverine, and he nearly kills him. So Shingin not only destroys Wolverine phsyically, he does it mentally as well. The last thing Wolverine hears before he passes out is Shingin going
"Behold daughter. The man you love. Except that he is no man at all, but an animal cast in the semblance of human form. Gaze upon him Mariko. Witness his true nature, his true self. Here is the...thing to which you have given your heart. Answer me truthfully- -is he worthy of such a prize?"
and Mariko responding,
"No."
It's the best defeat Wolverine has ever been dealt. The rest of story is about Wolverine trying to decide between finding himself, and choosing wich of the two women he loves (he later meets Yukio) he must choose. It's also nice because you find out that Shingin is still manipulating him even after he casts him out on the street after the beating.
If you haven't read it you should check it out. It's widely regarded as the mini-series that elevated Wolverine to the status he is now.
Besides the great story, I also love it for the smaller things it introduces (The Hand, the phrase "I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn't very nice.")
If you also introduce the Silver Samurai into the mix, it could be truly epic.
Infinity,
Then you just add more confusion by putting Yuriko in this. Now he has no memory, but he and Yuriko now know each other post mind wipe? Then why don't they acknowledge that in X2? Makes no sense.
Not to mention Wolverine was a cookie cutter movie with nothing special about it. Do we honestly expect more from FOX? Was FF2 miles better than FF? Since X2, has FOX made any comic film that was high quality? If X3 is the best they can boast from the period post X2, that's a problem considering they've released more comic films than any other company in that time frame. Now, I'll be the first to say I don't hate X3, but the movie is extremely flawed and shares many of the same problems all of the FOX films have had post X2.
In short, those expecting a quality increase won't get it, and this film will be another Wolverine film that had mountains of potential only to squander it.

How many issues?
You're getting the storylines confused. I said Yukio. Yuriko is Lady Deathstryke, and he did know her before Weapon X, and her father had connections to the Weapon X program. That storyline can't be done in the way Weapon X was set up.
Yukio is a girl he meets during the course of the Japanese story with Shingen. She's not hard to introduce at all, and he never knew her before going to Japan to talk with Mariko.
You do have a point about Fox, but both Donner and Jackman have expressed their appreciation of the story.
You're right, I got them confused. My bad
And Jackman and Donner were both producers for Wolverine. They had power to make changes for the better of this film, and instead helped in making the cookie cutter film we got. Their love of this character didn't save this film, so how would their love of this story save a film about the Japan story?
I don't see them making anything better than Wolverine was given recent history.
It's easy to do, all the names kind of blend together. Yukio, and then Mariko and then Yuriko which is like a blend of the two lol.
And yeah, I know it's a long shot, but all I can do is hope really. Hopefully they'll listen to some of the negative reviews and try to fix the problems this film had, because I agree, the film overall had a very...unpolished feel to it. It felt like a half-attempted try at a good Wolverine movie, because there were some moments that were great (Reynolds, any scene with Schrieber in it) but overall it was rushed and poorly put together.

All these names are too similar at times
You hit the nail on the head, and this is my problem with the movie. It had the right people in this movie and had moments, but instead of utilizing this talent to its full potential, they rush it and add so many dumb moments and plot holes. Things that easily could have been fixed too, but they let them go and they pile up as the film goes and drags it down heavily.
This film is really a big missed opportunity to me, which is very unfortunate given what they had for it.
Omega Red doesn't work with the Japanese story. It just doesn't really fit. If anyone would be added Silver Samurai is the only logical choice, because he's already connected to that storyline.
Omega Red was resurrected by Matsuo though. Matsuo was involved in the killing of Mariko which is why Wolverine returns every year to cut off a piece of him.
So they can definetly work him in although it wouldn't fit as well since Team X didn't go after the C-synth in this movie.
