Wilcox County High School Students Hold First Integrated Prom

Thanks for lumping us all together. :whatever:

Well you know....that's what racists do. They can't help themselves.....they haven't moved into the 21st century yet. That's what I meant earlier....threads like this expose the racists, bigots, and prejudiced among us.

I guess you didn't read the second article where a kid got on a loudspeaker at Wal-Mart and told all black customers to leave the store, but anyway, I could post more stories and then we can argue which is worse but it's pointless. Race relations in the North are not so much better than in the South the way people sometimes like to think.

There's a difference between a bunch of kids being morons and segragation being perpetuated by State/ town Legislation in 20 freaking 13.

It's not a stereotype if it's true. Sorry, but these stories come out of the south with a disturbing frequency. Maybe the majority of southerners are smart progressives (although seeing as people like Jim DeMint get elected to statewide office I find that a hard argument to make), but you guys do have a larger minority of racists than other regions of the country. That racism is also institutionalized a lot more than in the north too. Instead of cursing out Parker for stereotyping, consider why that stereotype so strongly endures even today.
I wouldn't say that the South has a larger minority of racists than in other regions of the country. I live in Upstate New York and it is just as bad as a lot of Southern states. You won't believe how many Confederate flags are up here and there is a town about an hour and a half from where I live that actually joined the Confederacy and rejoined the Union in 1946.

I will agree that there is a much larger degree of institutionalized racism in the South though. But racism among the populace, it's pretty damn even throughout.

Any Italian that lives in Jersey/NY is just as racist if not more than any southern redneck.

Segregation is alive and well in many other parts of this country, whether its admitted or not. You disagree?

And I just heard the song accidental racist for the first time today. Priceless.

I'm sorry. You guys can cry about Northern prejudice all you want, but no one is going to convince me that New Jersey is as racist as, say, Mississippi, a state which just ratified the 13th amendment THIS year, still bears the confederate banner on its state flag and treated black people no better than animals until the 1960's.

I thought I wrote a post in here earlier today, but it's not here now, so I must have accidentally left the page before hitting the submit button or something.

Anyway, I think some of the Hypesters from the South are being a little sensitive in this thread. This is a news story that concerns racism in the South, and in that context, a few users made a few joking jabs at racism in the South. We all know the South isn't some weird place stuck in the early 19th century and that the rest of the country isn't magically free of racism.

It's just one of those things people joke about, like when news stories about someone hurting his/herself comes out of Florida, or when NYC or San Francisco start to pass draconian food laws.

This thread boiled itself down to a news story about something racist in the South, a few users joking about racist stuff happening in the South, and Hypesters from the South responding with offense that someone would dare suggest racism still happens in the South.

--EDIT--

For the record, I'm not saying there aren't some actual ignorant things being said in this thread, but is a post like "Oh, the South" really worth getting fired up?

Southerners are the punching bag to say whatever you want without any repercussions from the politically correct.

No....the thread boiled down to a news story about something racist in the South, and then some users came in and did not separate the people from one town with everyone in the South. They are not taking offense that someone suggested that racism still happens in the South...Hell, we know it does...but apparently the people from the North have a very hard time acknowledging it happens there too. Racism is EVERYWHERE....but it seems easier for some to act like it only happens in the south.

Now who's generalizing? :cwink:

Anyone who thinks racism only happens in the South either doesn't live in the US at all or is not (and has never met) a racial minority. I can tell you stories, and I live in the Hippie Bay Area, Hippiefornia, United States of Not Real America.

Me...but if you notice...I said I believed that they were "ignoring and not accepting facts"....that's a long way from accusing them of being racist, backward idiots like some of the posters did towards the people of the South.

But I see you have aimed most of your posts at the people saying that the South is not the only place with racism and haven't bothered to correct any of the posters who attacked the people of the South.

That's because you Southerners are doing that already. You don't need me to defend you. I'm not even one of you. What the hell do I know about the South?

No one is saying all Southerners are racist. And there's many cities and parts of the South that are as open-minded and progressive as anywhere in the north (Northern Virginia for instance), but there's pockets of the South (such as Wilcox county) that really do have an imbedded societal problem when it comes to race-relations and it's created a problematic perception of the South as a whole. That's an unavoidable truth and sorry if it hurts.
