Will Robotech ever get made?

If Transformers smashes box office records, I'm hoping it will pave the way for someone to get a Robotech film off the ground. And that studios will have the balls to back it.

Evangelion's been in development at Weta forever (although I think Gundam is more suited for a franchise - both titles are equally obscure in the US anyway).

I can see it happening since Hollywood is so big on adaptations now and doesn't really want to try anything else except sequels, prequels, and remakes.

I'd love to see a good Robotech series in the live action format. I think at the very least Macross would work as a good movie or trilogy of movies.

Thing is, would it make money?

Gundam already got a live action movie with Canadian actors.

yah maybe after...:

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy and
Back to the Future 4

With all the fighting over the rights to ROBOTECH (damn you HARMONY GOLD  ) I doubt it.

If TRANSFORMERS is a huge hit than that might the people holding up the rights to let that Kung-Fu like grip slack a little.

Seeing how TRANSFORMERS is looking at the moment... Im glad that ROBOTECH is still cartoon form only :o

As for a live action film though... You could do 3 films set in the 3 different timelines or do three films that switch between them (could get confusing with too many plots going) I guess the best way would be to do a trilogy based on the Macross episodes (clearly the most popular of the 3 ROBOTECH series) then go into the other timelines if it was still making money.

I'm still waiting for a live action G.I.Joe
M.A.S.K.
Inhumanoids
Silverhawks
......smurfs.

You can't do alternating timelines. A movie have to have a linear or mostly linear timeline.

Thing is, the whole Robotech story was still just a massive cut/paste, appropriation and deviation of the Japanese anime series theys mooshed together.

Also are the rights still in as much turmoil as we think? I doubt they could release uncut versions of Macross now if that was true. Plus Shadow Chronicles.

What about Gundam? I know it's not hot in the US, but I do think it's really made for the big screen - a real sci-fi civil war franchise about war itself, with crazy action and intriguing villains.

I guess to me it'd be something that's never been done before. I'm just struggling to see new stuff in the movies these days.

Not hot in the U.S.?
Are you f-ing kidding me.
Everyone knows what a Gundam is.

FYI once again, Gundam got a live action English language movie.

It doesn't have to be Robotech per se, but there is definitely a need for some kind of well-done live action giant robot film with high tech FX. I honestly think that Mospeada (AKA: Third Generation Robotech) could make a great movie. The aliens are unusual, the robots and motorcycle-armor are cool-looking, and one of the main characters is a cross-dressing pop star - what's not to like?

But there's plenty of other more obscure giant robot anime series out there too that could work - Dougram, Xabungle, Dunbine and L-Gaim just to name a few.

Yeah, but that doesn't count.
We want a Gundam film of the One Year War, not some made up crap, like what happened with Final Fantasy.

EDIT: Never mind, you guys are talking about the made-for-TV G-Saviour, right? Bleh.

G-Savior?

Please I'm talking about a US150m SFX Summer tentpole.

Not going to happen anytime soon. Only if Evangelion manages to get released and makes a ton, which I also don't see happening anytime soon.

I actually agree with that. I'm hoping Transformers will go some way in alleviating studios' concerns about the genre, although titles such as Eva and Gundam may be a bit too far off.

Maybe if more A-list directors such as Spielberg, Jackson, Cameron etc start showing interest things might move. Having said that I don't recall Jackson ever mentioning anything about Eva. It's mostly been Richard Taylor of Weta talking about it, and even that's died off.

Anyone knows if Cameron's Battle Angel has got any serious mecha in it?

I doubt it would ever get made but I rather Neon Genesis Evagalvion get made into a movie.
