The issue starts out with Liz and MJ talking again. Liz tells her to get to the point of her story... how it relates to Peter... because all she has heard so far is how MJ started liking Spider-Man. Mary Jane tells Liz that the Spidey stuff and the Peter stuff are related... kinda.
They then switch to flashback mode -- One year ago...
Mary Jane is in the library, cutting photos of Spider-Man out of the newspaper. The librarian is not pleased... and is even less so when MJ smarts off to her, which lands MJ in the principles office.
He notices her new "look" and wisely realizes that something is going on with her. Of course part of the charm of this book is the dialog, which makes the scene... and forgive me, but I can't copy all that down...
Her friends, Liz, Flash and Harry gather at the Coffee Bean, plotting... MJ comes in and they wisk her off to the subway, where they take a train downtown. Seems Flash heard a news report that Spider-Man and the Goblin where having a real knock-down drag out there. MJ is confused about what they are doing there... that is until Spidey swoops down right over there heads, being pulled by a web line... attached to a glider.
They watch the fight overhead. The Goblin throws a pumpkin bomb at a building JUST to try and cause civilian casulties... or, to get Spidey off his tail as he frantically trys to web up the falling debris, so it doesn't hurt anyone.
MJ is rivited... "So cool..." She's looking up at Spidey and he looks down... their "eyes" meet for a moment... then he swings off.
The group takes a train back. MJ thanks them for trying to cheer her up, but declines their offer to join them at the Bean. They leave and she continues on the train, headed home, alone. She's smiling...
But not for long... Ned and his new honey walk into her car, and they are draped all over each other. He makes a comment about MJ's "look" and the honey suggests they find an empty car... As they leave, MJ tears up and crys... staring out the window, she seems very alone.
Next day at school we see Peter, with his head hung low, walking through the halls... He meets Harry and Flash coming in the opposite direction. Flash says "Hey, Parker, where's the funeral!?" Awww, whatsamatter... Are you going to cry?" Peter walks past them.
Flash says to Harry "Look at him. I think he's really gonna go cry.
Harry gets angry, "Geez, Flash, could you be any more insensitive? You didn't hear what happened last week did you?"
Flash is still in bully mode, "What, did he break a beaker?"
We see Peter continuing on... as around the corner MJ and her goth friend, Jessica are talking."
