I don't get this logic. Would you prefer Nolan cast a lousy actor for the role? Just because it's (presumably) a small role doesn't mean you still shouldn't hire the best actor you can get. "Wasted" implies his potential is being cut short, which isn't the case here. It's not like, if he wasn't the bank manager, he would've been Mr. Freeze or something.

He's a great character actor, but on the Hollywood totem pole, he's a (at best) a C-lister, and he's been given a C-list role. Sounds reasonable.

He had a small role alongside Bale in Equilibrium and was perfect. After all, there are no small roles, only small actors right?

This isn't the first bit part Fitchner has had in a big budget movie.As others have pointed out he's friends with Nolan and he was asked to do this small role as favor so it's not really a waste.I doubt Fitchner thinks that - TDK doesn't look bad on anyone's resume.

William Fichtner's in everything. He played one of the bats in "Batman Begins".

Only thing I remember him from is Longest Yard and Black Hawk Down.

He was also in Armageddon

William Fichtner is great, but I really couldn't care less about him having a more important role in the film. I mean, how is this waste? The screen time is going to be divided between Bale, Oldman, Ledger, Caine, Gyllenhaal and Eckhart. If Fichtner took on a more "important" role, then he still wouldn't have much screen time, because all the popular roles have been taken.

It's hardly a waste.

But it's exactly like a poster said in the previous page: Nolan put an Oscar nominee for the homeless "Nice coat" guy in BB, why not Fichtner, too?

Now, I'm not one to complain. I'm super-hyped for "The Dark Knight", and think the cast is awesome. When William Fichtner was added to the cast, I was very excited, thinking, "GREAT! Another excellent actor joins the Batman ensemble!" But then I hear he's playing...the Bank Manager.

FWIW, the Joker doesn't KILL the guy during the robbery, as far as we can tell. He makes him cr*p his pants, and he DOES get shot, but that's about it. So maybe he has another scene or two.
