Film crew commits to green ethic
By CHRIS MORRIS
Tuesday, 29th January 2008

THE makers of the $100 million Hollywood blockbuster Xmen Origins: Wolverine are to be rolemodels for environmentallyfriendly movie-making, days after being caught storing high explosives next to the Queenstown Gardens.

Woz Productions has agreed to allow Queenstown Lakes District Council recycling specialists on sites and sets around the resort to advise on recycling and other steps the film company could take to protect the environment.

The joint venture, announced in a press release yesterday, aimed to help develop guidelines that would form part of the council’s resource consent process for future productions.

The move comes after it was revealed last week Woz Productions had stockpiled explosives inside a building on the edge of the Queenstown Gardens, in breach of a lease agreement with the council.

The explosives were moved to a quarry outside Queenstown after council staff objected.

Yesterday, Guardians member Neil Clayton, whose organisation aimed to protect the gardens, said the latest announcement smacked of ‘‘tokenism’’.
The timing of the announcement, coming days after the explosives blunder and after the Fun Centre building on the edge of the gardens had been turned into an ‘‘industrial site’’, could not be overlooked, he believed.

‘‘I can’t imagine storing explosives in the gardens is regarded as being green. I can’t imagine running an industrial site in the gardens is green.

‘‘There’s no doubt in my mind this is about damage control. There’s no question it’s tokenism. This company will leave behind, as all film companies do, evidence of its departure,’’ he said.

Film Queenstown manager Kevin Jennings said the agreement would allow both parties to work towards a ‘‘green screen’’ ethic.

‘‘A movie of this nature is a huge undertaking. Over a relatively short period of time, that might involve remote catering for hundreds of cast and crew, set building, construction and painting.

‘‘The potential for recycling is enormous and the commitment being made here is extremely pro-active by the production.’’

Woz Productions producer John Palermo said it was important for the film industry to reduce its environmental impact.

‘‘The natural beauty of the region is what attracted us to film here in the first place, so it is important we . . . help preserve that environment,’’ he said.

X Men need more time

30/01/2008 14:16:01

The makers of the latest X-Men movie, which is being filmed in Queenstown, need more time to shoot the project.

The company making the $100 million blockbuster, Woz Productions, has applied to vary their resource consent. It wants to extend their filming period from March to April, as well as double their helicopter movements from 10 to 40 each day.

The production has already caused controversy in the resort town, after the filmmakers were told to remove explosives from the Queenstown Fun Centre.

Maybe my math is rusty but 10 to 40 is not double, it's quadruple from what I remember in elementary school.

X4 should come out years after magneto's movie.

Everything's a secret.

Qtown to 'add impact' to X-Men film shoot

Scenes in action blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine to be shot in Queenstown will be some of the most important in the film, according to the team behind the movie.

"There's not a huge portion of the movie being shot in New Zealand," Wolverine publicist Victoria Buchan said. "But the scenes that are being shot here will have a huge impact on the film. Queenstown will definitely be the backdrop to the movie."

Ms Buchan said the region's outstanding scenery was the reason it was chosen as a location for the film.

"The movie's producer John Palermo was quoted the other day saying how the natural beauty of the area had attracted him to Queenstown. I believe that there are around 250 local people working on the film between here and Dunedin," Ms Buchan said.

Mr Palermo co-owns production company Seed Productions with Australian actor Hugh Jackman, who is set to star in Wolverine.

The movie is the fourth instalment in the X-Men series, which has grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide.

Details of the film's scheduling are being kept top secret by 20th Century Fox in Hollywood.

Sets have been created at several Wakatipu locations, including Deer Park Heights and Arcadia Station, as well as in Dunedin, but the official cast list has not been released.

"Hugh is the only cast member that has been confirmed so far," Ms Buchan said.

"The main unit filming has not started yet. All that I can say about the schedule is that we will be here for another few weeks. "

Other people confirmed to be involved with the filming are director Gavin Hood, producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter, who also produced the first three X-Men films, and Marvel Comics' Kevin Feige as executive producer.

I have send a mail yesterday at Victoria Buchan, the publicist of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", I hope to have info about filming and new location.

Was working on installing a set today called Cassadys Bar. Its a bar set in canada and is the set for a big fight scene between Logan and Victor Creed.

There's a video showing some of the sets going up:

Shooting for Wolverine set to commence in South Island
27-Jan 19:20

Shooting is about to get underway in the South Island, for the highly anticipated X-Men movie, Wolverine.

Filming will take place around Queenstown and Dunedin over the next six weeks, but it seems it is taking more than just impressive scenery to attract movie producers down under.

The Queenstown film office is joining together with other regions to offer producers more than just mountains and lakes.

“It sort of makes it a one-stop through Queenstown,” Kevin Jennings from Film Queenstown said. “And then we can put them onto some of the other regions which might have a coastline, or barren hillsides, tussocks, clay cliffs or small towns.”

Last year’s vampire flick Perfect Creature chose Oamaru and Dunedin to achieve its dark gothic look.

Dutch film Bride Flight also shot in the two southern cities late last year, after struggling to find period locations further north.

International filmmakers also employ many local workers and say shooting down under is like a bit of a holiday.

But while films are perceived as the glamour projects, the Queenstown chairman of the Film Technican’s Guild says it is the overseas advertisements that often appeal to crew.

“The commercials are for me, more of the glamour shots,” Joshua Dunn from the Film Technician’s Guild said. “More helicopters, more rushing around, more crazy hours, more unpredictable locations. But film once it’s cranking along, is a bit more of a big machine.”

A machine that is expected to continue to grow, with at least three more film projects rumoured to be heading south over the coming year.

And here's a video about use of the ice rink for storing explosives.

Is Michael C. Hall in this or not? That may make or break my excitement for this film.

On a blog:

http://kayst-travel.blogspot.com/2008/02/more-adventures.html

This afternoon we took a Lord of the Rings jeep tour up to where they did a lot of the filming for LOTR. We saw Fangorn forest, where Isengard would be if it was real (the backdrop for it anyway), the Misty mountains and other places. There was also a large crew there filming scenes from the new Wolverine movie. Hugh Jackman is in town but we haven't seen him. He took the jetboat ride yesterday tho, just a few hours before us.

I would love to take a tour of the LOTR locations.

Seriously...I completely want to take that LOTR tour. :wow:

Don't know how true this is but thought I'd post, from "The Australian".

ANOTHER big production soon to commence shooting locally is Wolverine or, to give its correct title, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Does anyone need the whole title spelt out so laboriously? Yes, Wolverine is an X-Men character, and yes, this film tells of his life before he joined the happy band of box office-busting mutants. Filming has begun in Queenstown in New Zealand's deep south and some secrecy still surrounds who's in the cast, apart from Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Liev Schreiber. We'll know more when production moves to Sydney's Fox Studios next week. For a taste of Wolverine director Gavin Hood's work, Rendition, starring Reese Witherspoon, opens here next Thursday.

NEXT WEEK????

Then I would venture a guess that the filming in NZ isn't going to take place for a bit yet....

Who knows what's going on... Hugh was spotted jetskiing in New Zealand over the weekend - we need an update from someone LOL. The report said filming has begun in NZ but I guess that could be without actors... or with actors but we just don't know it...

Okay im new here im from new zealand near where they are filming and thought you guys find this interesting that woz productions is staying at the hotel i work at so theyre definitely in town well the production crew anyways

Welcome, sokotoa. Let us know if you hear any titbits or when the crew start packing up.

It sounds like principle photography has begun:
Saw Hugh Jackman running thru the woods today in full Wolverine costume. Apparently he is shooting a movie of the same name as the x-men character. New Zealand is doubling as canada. I went on a tour of the National Park where Lord of the Rings was filmed. Many films are made there. Wolverine is just the latest one. So that was the highlight of the day.
...
We were in a van it was much like being at a theme park seeing him. He was outside the window. It was like seeing a lion at the San Diego Zoo. Although Hugh Jackman is mch better looking. But I digress.
