EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Durand to play The Blob in Wolverine

And just like that, we’ve got another little scoop for you from inside the production of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Last week we told you that Wolverine would encounter The Blob at some point during the upcoming prequel, and now we know who will be jumping into the big rubber fat suit. His name is Kevin Durand.

Not familiar with the name? Just look at the picture to the right. Durand is “that guy” from movies like Wild Hogs, Mystery, Alaska and most recently 3:10 to Yuma. Our source inside the production tells us that Durand was “live-scanned” for The Blob a while ago, but has just officially signed on to the project in recent days. Word is that he will be heading up to his native Canada to shoot scenes for the film sometime next week. This is also important because the rest of the production is happening half way across the world in New Zealand and Australia. Does this mean that The Blob will not share too many scenes with Wolverine himself? Or does it mean that he will be shooting everything in front of a green screen and be digitally inserted into the film? Or better yet, is the production moving to Canada at some point? Time will tell, I’m sure.

In other Wolverine news, Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan has also joined the production as Barnell, a former military ally of Logan with the power to harness energy and electricity.

Stay tuned for more Wolverine news in the coming weeks… We will keep our recon team working overtime for you.

I've got a question about this movie. Is Origins supposed to be in the same continuity as the rest of the X-Men movies? Because we've got the whole Sabertooth and Wolverine rivalry going on, and we know none of it was shown in X1. And since we'll probably get a good amount of adamantium claw action, I doubt the Movie is going to end with Wolverine fleeing from Weapon X after the bonding process, conveniently having him forget all connections with Sabertooth.

There was talk that Sabretooth would lose his memory at the end of the spin-off, possibly from having Wolverine's claws stuck through his head in a rather brutal lobotomy...and that this would then be the reason for the rather dumb brute version in X1.

Yeah but how do we fit Tommy Morrison into the next one?

That would explain why Sabertooth doesn't have any memories then. But we still need an explanation why Wolverine doesn't remember a thing. The only explanation I can think of, is if Wolverine would fight Sabertooth while he's in his berserker mode. And after his head clears he doesn't know what happened. Of course this all would've to happen right after the bonding process, where his mind is still vulnerable.

Wolverine's memory has to get wiped in this in order for him to remember nothing in X1. That's the only explanation. The early script did have a scene of his memories being altered/removed. I'm not telling you any more. :cwink:

Funny, I didn't know about this lobotomy thing. I thought the reason was the
clones

^^ It depends if we still have that aspect. It might be there to give multiple enemies for all Wolverine's new pals to fight, but I suspect it might not be there any more.

alright heres the facts...
we've got a highly respected award winning and heavily nominated director...
we've got an actor reprising a role that most would have thrown the towel in on after 3 movies to move onto other roles and franchises to last him another 10yrs in the biz....
we've got a very talented writer....
and finally an ever expanding cast list of some characters that just don't seem to fit...
tell me...what conceivable storyline could this threesome possibly be weaving here to fit into the lore and origins of Wolverine? Some of these recent announcements just have me scratching my head...

Unless you have the script, you won't know how it all fits together. It's no good trying to guess the entire movie!

Wolverine to Begin Shooting on Cockatoo Island
Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

It seems like the cast and crew of X-Men Origins: Wolverine may soon be filming on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour. According to a scooper at Moviehole.net, there has been work on prepping locations on the island for filming:

Just a bit of info re X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I work on Cockatoo Island on Sydney Harbour. For your information, they are filming there over the next few months. Currently building sets etc. Lots of night shooting coming up apparentely. At this stage due to finish there in May.

Cockatoo Island is a former imperial prison, industrial school, reformatory and gaol, that was later one of Australia's biggest shipyards, and is now a premiere tourist destination for Australia.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine explores Wolverine's early days, before joining the X-Men. The film will cover Logan's early life, and his involvement with the mysterious Weapon X program. The film stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Shrieber, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch, will.i.am, Daniel Henney, Dominic Monaghan and Lynn Collins. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is due to arrive in theatres in 2009.

The Wolverine movie HAS to be in the same continuity as the first three X-Men movies...Thats where most of the general movie fans know Wolverine from to have it not be in the same continuity wouldnt make much sense at all.

I doubt it would really bother any of them. All they'd see is Jackman resprising his role as their favorite adamantium clawed mutant, mowing his way through bad guys. And it's all taking place in the past anyway.

Wolverine returns
Updated: 10:04, Monday February 25, 2008

Hugh Jackman is reprising his hugely successful role as Wolverine in Sydney this week.

Jackman, one of Australia's greatest showbiz exports, will head to Glebe on Friday to shoot overnight scenes for 'X-Men Origins'.

Naomi Watts's partner Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Danny Huston, Lynn Collins, Taylor Kitsch and the Black Eyed Peas' Will I Am have joined the cast of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', a spin-off from the highly successful X-Men movies.

The film, set 17 years before the X-Men movies, reveals the origins of the Wolverine character and introduces other mutants not yet seen in the franchise of films.

It is due for release in May 2009.

Jackman's 'Wolverine' starts shooting in Sydney

Australian actor Hugh Jackman will start filming his new movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in Sydney today.

Most of the film, a prequel to the X-Men trilogy, is being shot at Sydney's Fox Studios and other sites around the city after some initial filming in New Zealand earlier this month.

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma says the movie will create 250 full-time equivalent jobs and inject at least $60 million into Sydney's economy.

"Wolverine's producers have chosen Sydney as the base for this production ahead of Canada, thanks to our key infrastructure at Fox Studios and our talented crew base," he said in a statement.

Mr Iemma says his Government has agreed to provide a payroll tax rebate to secure the bulk of the production in NSW.

Jackman is also a producer of the film, which is set 17 years before the other X-Men movies and looks at the origins of the Wolverine character.

His Australian company, Seed Productions, is making the film with 20th Century Fox.

It introduces a number of mutants not seen in the earlier films, played by Australian Naomi Watts's partner Liev Schrieber, Ryan Reynolds, the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am and Dominic Monaghan.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is scheduled for release next year.

There's a Wolverine mention in this article about filming in Australia and the government rebate. It also talks about the "Justice League" movie.

Hugh Jackman's production company, Seed, has applied only for the 15 per cent location offset and possibly the post-production, digital and visual effects offset for its X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is being filmed in Sydney.

"Why would we waste our time applying (for the 40 per cent rebate)?" asks Wolverine producer John Palermo. "We know the criteria and we don't fit them."

The legislation allows discretion in determining Australian content. There are five criteria: subject matter (it doesn't specify whether an Australian subject is mandatory); where the film is made; the number of Australian creatives working on the film; where the main expenditure occurs; and a catch-all phrase that allows the Film Finance Corporation to look at any other aspects.

Wolverine hunts A-list celebs
February 28, 2008 12:00am

THE claws are out - and now the invites too, for an exclusive private party to celebrate the production of scary movie Wolverine in Sydney.

To be hosted by the flick's star, Hugh Jackman and production supremo John Palermo, the A-list affair will give Mardi Gras a run for its money in the big-name guest stakes on Saturday night.

Celebrities expected include Jackman's co-star Liev Schrieber and partner Naomi Watts, plus a show by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.

Jackman has form as a host-with-the-most, after wining and dining Grey's Anatomy star Kate Walsh and her Fox boss hubby Alex Young at the Sydney Hilton on the weekend.

He was spotted downing several Belvedere martinis at the hotel's Zeta bar, before joining the Hollywood couple and wife Deborra-Lee Furness for dinner at Glass restaurant.

I was hoping WonderCon this past weekend would give us a little more insight into both of these projects but they were absent. I've heard that a teaser for HULK is in the bag and awaiting placement on a film this spring. I've seen a "sizzle reel" trailer for WOLVERINE but as you might expect, it features no footage from the film itself.

I want to see this sizzle reel!

And the sizzle reel would most likely feature concept art, an interview or two. I'd definitely like to see that!
