Bobblehead Muhammed?

BY TINA MOORE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

A ceramic bobblehead doll of the Prophet Muhammed - created to resemble the infamous caricature published by a Danish newspaper - is being hawked online for $22.99 a pop by an ex-Marine.
The unapologetic creator, Timothy Ames, 28, said the bobblehead is similar to "dashboard Jesus" figurines that can be stuck with adhesive to flat surfaces. "I thought, 'If they flipped out over some cartoons what will they do with a dashboard Muhammed?'" Ames said from his home in Hawaii.

But Islamic experts are not amused, saying the bobbleheads could anger Muslims, whose religion strictly prohibits depictions of the prophet.

"No depiction of the prophet, even if it is positive, should be made ever - and certainly not one as ridiculous as the bobblehead Muhammed," said Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, an assistant professor at New York University. "I don't think it's about freedom of speech. This is the freedom to insult, which he shouldn't be doing."

Ames said several hundred people have purchased the dolls online, and he has paid a Chinese manufacturer to create 1,000 more. "I just think it's funny," he said.

Violent protests erupted last winter across the Muslim world after a Danish newspaper published cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammed as a suicide bomber. Many European papers reprinted the cartoons.

"People who get p----d off about this, they're going to get p----d off regardless," Ames, a baptized Christian, said.

The sophomoric Web site where Ames, using the pen name "Filthy," sells the bobbleheads also features a collection of scattered rants. In one, he writes: "I'm really not into slamming people just for their religion. Most of the stupid people I've met are stupid despite their religion, not because of it."

Frank Peters, a professor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at NYU, warned that a bobblehead Muhammed was "a really bad idea."

"Jews and Christians have gotten used to this kind of thing, but Muslims haven't," he said. "This may not be his intention, but these things have consequences."

I think we all know where this is going to end up

It's World War III not World War 3...

I tried WWIII, but you can't have capital letters except at the beginning of your thread title, so it looked like wwiii, so there you go RAC.

Timothy Ames, 28, from Hawaii.

I mean those terrorists will sure have a hard time finding him.

Now that just stupid, but you know some ignorant rednecks are going to buy these.

This is what bothers me. Why would you do that for no other reason than to insult someone? Idiots like this guy who can't understand, it is a war on terrorism, not a war on ISLAM, that give us such a bad name.

Straight from the horse's mouth:

So apparently I'm now the "bad guy."

I'm not really sure how that goes, but according to the radio and print journalists that have been calling me lately following my press release, I should know that people will end up killing each other over this Dashboard Mohammed. Hmm...

It's a ****ING TOY! In addition to that, it's not even a very GOOD toy! It's clever, sure. High-quality, of course! But you can't throw it down the stairs like a Slinky and expect it to survive.

People, get over yourselves if you think that I'm in any way intimidated by the fact that this TOY will earn me the wrath of the entire Muslim nation. Hell, the few Muslim friends that I have (due only to the fact that there aren't many over here in Hawaii chilling out with us) thought the ****ing thing was worth at least a chuckle. Get off your high horses, media ****es. Why don't you go out on the streets and ask Muslims what they think about it, before the **** hits the fan. Oh.... Not good ratings that way, eh? I couldn't really care less. I think it's funny, the several hundred people who've ordered it think it's funny, and no, humor is not international.

France - Loves Jerry Lewis
Japan - Physical comedy rocks!
Asia in general - Men dressed as women gets laughs.
U. K. - Sheep
U. S. - Satire and sarcasm is the wit d' la twit

Of course some dumb-ass imam is going to take this and run with it, fire up some stinking protest against western ideals. But if it weren't the D.Mo, it would have been the fact that Mickey Mouse was ****ing Minney before marriage, or something equally as nonsensical. Wake up, morons. Quit flapping your cock holsters and really think for a second. Whatever you do, there is always going to be a reason for someone with political or ideological motives different from yours to criticize and yes, even stir up some **** against you.

I don't know about the muslim friends he has, but as a muslim I find this toy offensive. The main reason being it depicts the Prophet as a terrorist bomber. If it was minus the bomb, I would have perhaps chuckled. :cmad:

That's the difference between this and a lot of things that aren't done with the intention to offend. If this guy wants to purposely upset people for his own amusement / money, I won't have any sympathy for him if/when things get messy.

"I don't think it's about freedom of speech. This is the freedom to insult, which he shouldn't be doing."

facsist f***......"Look, I believe in freedom of speech....as long as you don't say anything I disagree with."

Guess what. You say "he shouldn't be doing this."? I say he should. I say he's a hero. Looks like we have a disagreement.

Disagreements are no fun. They suck. However, I disagree with thousands of things and billions of people everyday. I will not harm them though.

I will not pin notes to their hearts with daggers. I will not trample small children in the streets in my rage. I will not hire any hit-men. I will not blow anything up. I will not cut anyone's head off. I will not shoot anyone.
Hell, I don't even boycott things or hold up homemade cardboard signs while shouting at choirs (though I have no problem with the concepts, of course).

These things I swear, because I am a civilized Human.

Freedom of speech, maybe. But he is going out of his way to be an ass.

Also in quasi response to Wilhelm. This could certainly be equated to "shouting fire in a crowded movie theatre". If you know that Muslims "cannot get over themselves (because it's a f***ing toy)" and you do it anyways you are looking to start something. It's kind of like a white dude walking through Harlem yelling out "Ni**ars, all you guys are..."

The guy is stupid and pathetic.

Sure, you can say that they should "get over it" and not get upset.....but if you know it will cause someone to kill someone else (and recent news events shows that it definately has that possibility)....then you are guilty of inciting violence.

Yep.
It's just like with musical self-expression.

If Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne or Marilyn Manson write an irreverent song where they encourage kids to commit suicide or to worship Satan...they should know that of course, as unfair as it is, there ARE depressed, disturbed teens out there who will actually be influenced by their violent, blasphemous words and images...so if they produce art, even as a joke, or to point out how ridiculous the world is, they're still culpable if someone they've never met is mentally imbalanced and does something wrong in response to their art.

Also, it's a WELL-known, documented fact that some people have read the Bible, taken it's commands to kill witches, homosexuals, disbelievers, etc. literally and committed violent acts, with Biblical teachings as their sole inspiration.

That's why the Bible should be banned. Sure, it's a person's "right" to publish it and read it, but to do so, knowing that it causes violence means that they're responsible when someone over reacts to it's words.

The flashing tiger makes me want to take drugs. It should be banned.

If they flip out because of a bobblehead, I'm going to laugh my ass off.
I wonder how many nuns these nuts will shoot.

Apparently we disagree (there's a surprise :oldrazz: )......I don't think that musicians should be held responsible for the occasional self hurting of some disturbed teens or others. Just as I don't believe that those who publish the Bible, Quran, Torah, comic books, or whatever should be held responsible for the violence perpetrated by the "occassional" fanatic of any of these things. You can not say that all of "this" or "that" cannot be made because 1 person out of a million might get angry and do something awful. But.....I feel that if you know that a certain thing will cause rioting and death across the globe if you do it....then doing it just to make the statement - "They should get over it." - is reprehensible.

You can continue to roll your eyes now.

Yep...the possible death of thousands....the continued spread of hatred and death around the world....the destruction of untold thousands of dollars of property.....yep, that's worth laughing at.

That's a graphic representation of how digusted I am with this "It's the abused woman's fault, not the wife beater's" - Notion.

When people say, "Yeah, a lot of Muslims are over-reacting, and yeah, it's weird that Christians don't go out and kill people when they see "Piss Christ", but since we KNOW that many of them are apt to get violent and make threats, WE should know better than to let our behavior stir them up."

it reminds me of a Wife Beater, who is insane, irrational...who tells his wife, "Look Honey, now you don't have to worry about getting beaten EVER again!:) As long as you do not talk to any males except me, do not leave our apartment for any reason until I get home from work, and never, ever serve my dinner cold...I'll never have to beat you. :) See?"

And then she serves him some cold peas, so he gets a sock full of quarters and turns her face into pulp, gives her brain damage, and laments, "This was all YOUR fault. You made me do this! You should've known better than to serve me cold peas. We've set a precedent and I gave you all the warning in the world that the consequences would be dire if you didn't live life by my rules and do what I see as fit to do."

God. :whatever:

Guys who beat their wives don't use big words like "precedent" and "consequences".

That's for sure.

This guy's a jackass.
