Camera opens up on the back of a man from waist up
he's holding a microphone and there's a spotlight on him
camera pans out on this suit-wearing man and the theater can now see that he's standing on a stage, doing standup
because of the spotlight and other house lights the filled auditorium is shadowed out and only the profiles of the audience can be seen
as the volume increases you can hear a montage of his jokes intermixed with cuts of the comedian, but never revealing his face. just shots of him holding the mic, hand in his pocket, his shoes, flower in his lapel etc...
all throughout this act, he is absolutely BOMBING..i mean really bad puns, old jokes, and etc that'll make the movie audience groan....the auditorium (on screen) is dead silent from his POV; once in a while he snickers at one of his horrible jokes, contributing to this awful scene that's almost embarassing to watch. never pausing, the editing keeps the joke montage up to pace, not slowing down.
finally he finishes his act, puts the mic back onto the stand, and takes an overexaggerated bow.
as he does it, the film slows down and you can see the audience member sitting directly in front of him, and heis half-slouched in their chair with a twisted open mouth grin frozen into their face
this is where the camera angle changes and the shadows no longer block the auditorium and we can see that the entire audience has simliar grins and are all (also) dead in their formal wear in their seats. focus returns back to the original dead man we saw first, closing in on his grin center-screen
time speeds back to normal, comedian comes back up from his bow, pivots 180 degrees, walks toward the camera at such an angle that we only see his face below the nose, but his huge grin is still center-screen ala the sitting man, and of course matches it perfectly
comedian pivots to stage right, walks off stage, and you hear rustling of clothing, coats, mummering
off camera voice: "you killed 'em boss"
off camera voice 2: "yes..........i certainly did"
spotlight and houselights are shutoff, and we here them exit via a side door
all the while camera hasn't moved focus from its orignal point from the back of the stage. withouth the shadows we can now see the quiet, empty auditorium filled with the bodies
as the last of the lights finally dim, camera fades along with it until the screen is black. bat-logo appears with The Dark Knight over it, 2008 at the bottom
i whipped this up real crude so the quality is crap but its what i'm picturing
