Just saw a commercial for this movie, it's so sad that I'm so far out of the loop on when and what new movies are coming out. I used to be a bit more on the top of these things lol. So was happy to see a thread about it. I'm planning on seeing this, comes out the 25th right?

My only problem is I stopped watching X-Files after Duchovney left. I watched maybe 2 episodes after that, and then the series final itself, but the show just didn't seem the same. I liked the Mulder and Scully chemistry with monster of the week stories (as you guys call them), or Mulder's alien hunt deals. I think once the series got too heavy into it's own mythos and switched into a more serious storyline I kinda lost interest, Mulder leaving just seemed a good time to quit the series as well.

However if I'm reading this right (read some random pages, not all posts in this thread so could be wrong) but it's not solely a follow up to the last movie and the series finale right? If that's the case I'll probably be more into this movie.

I just completed my X-Files Season Series collection but can somebody please tell me because I can't remember at what point in the whole time line was the 1st Movie. I mean did it happen before what season or after what season?

My opinion, this movie stays at #2 while TDK keeps it's number one spot the weekend of the 25th.

Or Step Brothers beats out X-Files out as well...

i have a feeling this movie will be surprisingly good....

because they are hiding ALOT in these trailers/spots...

The lack of hype for this film is really dissapointing...
Sure...there are trailers showing up in various spots...but that's it. I think they missed a great opportunity for a viral campaign on this one.

(1) So the past weekend was the first time that you knew that The X-Files film was being released? Wow, FOX's marketing really has been low.

(2) This film is a standalone. One does not need to have watched the series to be able to understand it.

There were a few major developments that you probably should know. Mulder was abducted by aliens at the end of Season 7. Scully announced to Skinner that she was pregnant. Mulder returned towards the end of Season 8, but he was dead. However, months later, he was alive again. Yeah...weird stuff. By the end of Season 8, Scully and Mulder revealed that William was their son. How? Scully had been not been able to reproduce naturally after her abduction, but she asked Mulder to be her done and she had IVF done. It failed. So I guess when she and Mulder finally became lovers - off screen - it happened.

Mulder returned for the Series Finale. In it, he was sentenced to death in a secret military court. With the help of a few allies, he was broken out of prison. He and Scully went to New Mexico, where it was revealed by Cigarette-Smoking Man that the alien invasion would begin in 2012.

Mulder and Scully escaped to a motel room, where they had a discussion about what the future would bring. Mulder felt like crap, but Scully told him that they would find the truth together. The scene mirrored the show's pilot, except that it ended with Mulder and Scully snuggling together in bed.

The End

The first film was released between Seasons 5 and 6.

Thnx lyndenfl. It's not that I didn't expect one to come out as I did hear rumors that it could potentially come out a few years ago. However I never knew it actually went into production. And yes that commercial was the first time I knew it was actually finished. It was kinda surreal, the commercial finished, I kinda double taked and thought, "Wow...really? It's...done? X-Files 2 was filmed?"

However in slight defense of Fox it's partially because I just never watch TV anymore. I watch something like 2 shows a week anymore on TV. Anytime not spent at work, with friends/family, at the gym or with a girl, etc. is usually spent on the net or playing games or watching a DVD. They could have had a marathon of X-Files 2 commercials all weekend and I'd never know.

It's somewhat fitting that the X Files film will be released so closely with TDK, considering I Want To Believe mirrors Batman Begins so closely. FOX is taking a very cautious approach it would seem. They don't want to shove the new film down people's throats, considering the after-taste of the series' final days is still somewhat fresh.

Some people may remember the convoluted mythology arc that ended in 2002 rather than the iconic episodes that came out of the 90's. Perhaps FOX is hoping that word of mouth can give the film legs, considering it will be in the path of the juggernaut that is TDK. If the film surprises, look for DVD sales and a rejuvinated interest in the TV show to help make the whole thing a success.

There have been rumors about an X-Files film since the show ended in 2002, but nothing came of them. Then, last October it was announced and immediately FOX said that it would be released on July 25. It started filming around 5 weeks later. Then, filming ended in early March 2008. Everything happened at lightening speed.

TV commercials started two weeks ago. General marketing has been rather low key, so awareness seems low.

I'm an casual fan of the episodes and have just seen the random episode here and there over the years and I have to say that Fox's marketing on this flick is terrible. If i wasn't an net nerd, I wouldn't even know it was coming out. I think it would be better if they moved it to october or December which is an time that some genre movies(if marketed properly) can make some considerable bank.

I mean, let's be honest, that dark knight second weekend is still gonna be MASSIVE if the opening weekend is as big as people are expecting. It saddens me, because when i heard this movie was actually gonna happen, i got excited and I'm actually thinking of going out to buy some of the old sets now since they're so cheap now.

I want to believe this movie will do well, but it is going to get it's ass kicked next week by TDK. The release date they chose was a big mistake, not to mention the marketing has been terrible.

I will agree that they should've released it in Fall/Winter. It's not really a summer movie, especially since X-Files has been over for the last how many years...

By "hiding ALOT in these trailers/spots", do you mean hiding the actual trailers and spots themselves. I haven't come across a single one in theaters or on TV. Where is the advertising for this movie???

Saw a tv spot for it after the office. Im not a X files fan but I really want to see this..........

Even though the TV spot tells you next to nothing about the film's plot? What would attract a non-fan to watch this film?

Saw the trailer every commercial break on G4 last night during the E3 show. Nice.
Still wish they had a viral campaign.

I hope the show still has enough loyal fans to really push this up in the box office?

I was a big X-Files fan back in the day and I'm still not excited to see this movie. Whenever I see a commercial I'm reminded of how lackluster the first film was. None of these commercials convince me this movie is going to be good. Furthermore, I've heard some annoying rumours about one storyline that had closure in the series which will be revisited in this movie.

Which storyline?

This film is much different from the first one, in terms of content and storyline. This one is more of a 'Silence of the Lambs' film.

The storyline of Mulder searching for his sister again. I was happy when he finally got closure during the series. Re-opening that storyline again wouldn't make much sense at this point.

I knew little about The X-Files before I saw the first movie. The show had great ideas, but I never had the patience for it. That's probably why I liked the first film. It felt streamlined.

I don't know what to think about this one. The footage they've released doesn't properly establish what the film's about. The audiences I've been with when it plays in front of a film seem to agree; outside of some brief murmurs, there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm to go see this. I wouldn't be surprised if this does as poorly as The Happening did.
