First look: 'X-Files' returns to theaters, minus alien mythology
By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — The sequel is out there.
The conspiracy theories will not be.
Ten years after the first film and six years after the show went off the air, The X-Files returns to theaters with Fox Mulder, Dana Scully — and a lot riding on the bet that fans want more of the FBI's paranormal-investigating agents.
The film, which remains without a formal title, will dump the long-running "mythology" plotline — that aliens live among us and are part of a colonizing effort — that made it one of the most popular television shows in the late 1990s but ultimately drove away some viewers who found it too complex and ambiguous.
"We spent a lot of time on (the mythology) and wrapped up a lot of threads" when the show went off the air in 2002, says Chris Carter, creator of the series and director of the new movie. "We want a stand-alone movie, not a mythology conspiracy one."

The conspiracy angle needed to end with the first movie. It was a perfect ending to the whole series, as well, but FOX had to be greedy f***ers, and draw the show out another four years.

Oh wow - It's exciting seeing the two together again. I recently started watching re-runs of the show on Sci Fi channel, and am remembering how good the show was. Can't wait for the new film! :D

I wonder if they'll be dating in the film, or back to just being close friends/partners.

im glad its a stand alone film...

as long as its an alien conspiracy movie its gonna rock.... theres not many movies like that so im excited lol

despite its tiny budget...

but they are saying that it will not be.

Btw, if anyone ever wanted to see Gillian Anderson's **** (duh!) see a new movie called Straightheads (aka Closure in the US). They're quite nice. :woot:

I'm still trying to get my head around how they can do a movie and not tie it into the mythology plotline. I mean the show ended with Mulder and Scully on the run, no longer assigned to the X-Files. Nonetheless, I am beyond excited. I think the only movie I'm more excited about this year is the Dark Knight.

Speaking of which, is this still coming out the week after Dark Knight? Part of me is really hoping the push the release date back, because I just dont forsee even the X-Files doing very well the weekend after a new Batman film has come out.

The mytologhy plotline finished in 2002 with the end of the series, but I do want an stand alone movie about aliens.

Wow! It's great to see those two again, brings back good memories. Being a huge fan of the X-Files series, this is truly great. I can't wait to see the movie.

I bought season two today... :D
