X-Men - Part 6

To be fair, in the excerpt I read, they don't really know Adult Bobby's sexuality. They mention his string of horribly failed relationships and the possibility that it was too hard to be gay and a mutant so he repressed his sexuality.

Anyway, the whole "born this way" vs. "it's a choice" debate is a huge over- simplification of gender and sexuality.

You read a horrible typo... I believe he was saying:

"Lets not pretend this is real life and not a comic book... you know, where we see peoples thoughts , private moments and deep inner monologue"

I'm still not sure what that has to do with anything.

Seems extremely forced and begging for more social media attention, which of course they got. Catwoman is handling the subject much better and subtle at the moment.

Bendis is done with X-Men soon though right? Wouldn't mind Lemire, Duggan or DeConnick giving X-Men a shot. Really looking forward to this X-Men world getting a rehaul post Secret Wars.

Bendis tweeted that he is annoyed about the leak and any media attention.

I'm sure a majority of creators or artists get pissed when their stories or art gets leaked early, though I don't think anyone working at Marvel would ever admit if they were actually for it. Cause at the same time this is what helps Marvel comics trend and sell issues nowadays.

Changing a characters sexual orientation is bound to cause debate and grab attention leaked or not. Heck, changing a characters costume or hair color causes debate. Look at the attention Batgirls costume got. Marvel knows what happens when you make changes in this day and age, how much fans care about canon and how fast things leak. Maybe Bendis thought this was a great story, but I just don't believe in any shape or form that this wasn't there to create headlines. I'm sure Bendis is not holding out on posting news articles and the attention be it negative or positive either.

Edit: Axel interview

Given all Iceman's previous romantic relationships be it failed ones (everyone real or in the Marvel Universe has those) or not, I think the choice and call out reveal is odd/forced. Bisexual would have made more sense if they wanted to switch things up and explore other things.

Also, the issue hasn't even come out yet. They are clearly going to deal with adult Iceman.

Obviously...

Now let’s talk about time travel. As mentioned, complicating matters is that the young Iceman is officially gay, while the older, now Iceman is not. At least not officially. Yet.

“We would be foolish not to deal with that,”
Alonso said. “That was the second part of my conversation with Brian. Time travel gave us a platform to discover the journeys of the young characters. The obvious question is that once the young Bobby Drake has accepted and embraced who he is, what are the ramifications for his adult counterpart? It’s safe to say that will be dealt with.”

And in case you were wondering, with Marvel’s giant event “Secret Wars” coming up, where the entire Marvel Universe is essentially destroyed and turned into one mash-up planet called Battleworld, no, Iceman isn’t going back in the closet. “This is who the character is now,” Alonso said definitively.

Well a lot of people on the last page were already dismissing the story because of adult Iceman.

Gotcha, misunderstood your post since I posted that link beforehand.

Well, as someone who has defended most of Marvel's alleged "PC stunts", this one really makes no sense. If they would have just made Bobby bi-sexual, then I'd have been fine. But as is it's just a big confusing mess.

I'm still not sure what that has to do with anything.

He pretty clearly has said in two posts that there's no indication of Bobby being gay before.
You stated people hide it for years.
His point was those people hiding it don't go through years with their innermost thoughts and observations presented in thought bubbles and inner monologues. He's saying we've had Bobby's thought bubbles and inner monologues showing him attracted to or interested in women for decades. To say he's just been closeted when we've been privy to his thoughts is a bit thin.

Which is why most comments I've seen have said "pure gay" makes no sense where bisexual would have moreso, which they outright shot down.

With Secret Wars coming, will this even matter? It could just be Marvel pulling a stunt for publicity but then they get rid of the character and use a different version of him after that event is done

i dunno, judging by how infatuated with the fan-wank material of ANXM Alonso seems to be, I wouldn't be surprised if these time-displaced X-men replaced their 616 counterparts after Secret Wars

Secret Wars, because destroying their characters one at a time was too slow for Alonso

I'm worried about Secret Wars for everyone. I don't even know what to read when it starts...

Obviously he wasn't gay and in the closet for his entire publication history. They're telling the story now. I never stated that "people hide it for years," anyway (though it is true).

thank you, damn phones

meaning.. we've seen bobby's thoughts on the women in his life before... with absolutely no internal struggle that would allude to him being gay...

Spider-Man, Human Torch, and Iceman are all cut from the same cloth... (spidey just got a serious relationship with MJ.. and was more awkward than "hot shot flirt" like the other 2) by the logic of "troubled relationships with women... that means all 3 of these could be gay/bisexual... and hell.. even batman (and most male characters in comics)

or at least give him a story where he becomes close with a friend/teamate.. and he starts realizing he's in love with the guy.. and let him deal with that... the way they're going about this is all around terrible... not to mention Adult Bobby has been around SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many psychics in his life.. that a young jean grey is the only one to deal with this???????

But no one is arguing he was gay all along. But it lends evidence to the story they are telling now, whether or not it's a retcon (the story hasn't actually finished being told, let's see how 600 plays out).

Anyway, I read the issue. I really hope they never send the O5 back in time again. For Bobby's sake...

Also, Magik is so awesome. Last week's Uncanny also focused on her. I give props to Bendis to making her a cool and important part of the X-men.

but that's the point people are annoyed with.. it's not believable.. a light switch of your choosing just doesn't happen one day.. If young bobby was having these feelings.. than older bobby has dealt with these feelings for about twice as long with no indication of such

That's story has been told (many times before).
Psychics haven't been around Teen Bobby like this before.
Good on Bendis for making sexuality complicated and confusing, and for making characters ok with it.

It's not a choice but it's also not controllable and fixed. Who knows what time travel like this would do for someone's sexual identity and subjectivity. I've never seen it explored before like Bendis is at least attempting to do.

but teen bobby is the same as old bobby... guess what happens the longer you suppress your sexuality... the more it eats at you and the more issues you have .. you honestly telling me all the psychics in older bobby's life never picked up on his angst?

time travel wouldn't effect anything...

why would traveling to a different time period make you gay all of a sudden? that's insinuating "well he sees other gay people and decided he's curious about it" thus more of a choice... or a viable option. and that's actually insulting

Because sexuality identity is not universal across time and space. Sexuality and desire is constantly being made, unmade, and remade. So jumping from what is like the 60s for them to now is going to hugely change what he is capable of identifying as.
