No he is an overated hack who emulates German Expressionism and Goth archetypes to the point of giving the film some "atmosphere" and taking away minor things like "The story" "The Characters" "Depth"..

the characters and depth i won't give you. Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Sweeney Todd all have characters and depth in spades.

story, on the other hand, i will give you. he even cops to the fact that internal plot logic is low on his priority list.

he emulates Hammor Horror, bad 50s sci-fi, and cartoons way more than he emulates German Expressionism and Gothic archetypes. i never understood why everyone threw the goth label on him. he's really not that goth. there's way too much color going on in most of his films to even be remotely considered gothic.

but, yes, you're in a bit of a minority around these parts. i'm sure there are several people who'll agree with you. just not too many around here.

The Hammer Films I really don't see.. I do see all the goth in BR and ES etc.

Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, Nightmare, Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, Vincent, Beetlejuice, and Pee-Wee all owe something to either 50s b-movies, Hammer Horror, or anything starring Vincent Price.

there's really only been like....three or four of his films that are big time goth/german expressionistic debt patronage.
