Xbox 360 Worth Buying?

I absolutely agree. And just like you wouldn't limit yourself to still pictures if you've got an animated art medium like movies, games shouldn't limit themselves to the tools of the movie medium. Interactivity is the primary advantage games have over any other medium, so if 40 or 50% of a 'game' consists of uninteractive cutscenes, something might be wrong there. That's just my feeling on it, though. Cutscenes are a waste of space on a game disc that could've been used for a better presentation of the creators' ideas.

In-game scripted sequences are a good method of story telling when it comes to video-games imo.

I don't mind scripted sequences. I don't like extremely long ones or when the gameplay is replaced by cutscenes.

Yup. Splinter Cell :cwink:

Yup. I would easily take MGS over any SC game, especially MGS3/4.

Plus, even if there is another 'excellent' stealth game out there does it somehow void the fact that you could cut straight to the gameplay to MGS?

Right, at the expense of that "artful, brilliant story," which is primarily in the cutscenes. But you shouldn't have to choose one or the other. Good game design means blending story and interactivity together.

Games can be more than that though. They are just as efficient a medium to convey a message as movies, music etc, they're art. The more titles like MGS4, the better the industry.

Games are a unique medium. There's no reason that a game has to fall into long cinematic sequences just to tell it's story. The point of a video game is interactivity, that's what makes the medium unique. Falling into using hour long cutscenes is just another way of saying "I couldn't really tell all this through cool, unique in game methods, so instead take a break from your game and watch this movie."

It's obvious that you think MGS4 is the greatest, most artistic game ever. But not everyone agrees with you.

And yes, Gears is great

You obviously haven't played Mass Effect then my friend. Before you start proclaiming MGS4 as the best game of the generation I suggest you play ME for a good few weeks, or at least check out a review. You want games that raise the bar? No other game does it more than Mass Effect IMO. The beauty about it is the choice. You can choose to do the story, or you just planet hop around the galaxies. Or go to space stations and gamble and stuff like that. It's a mix of Knights of the Old Republic, Oblivion and GTA.

So, basically the main complaint is that the cutscenes are too long in MGS first and when the alternative is that you skip them and get to excellent gameplay, then the complaint is you miss the great story if you do that?

I also totally and fully disagree. If a story is really that good, even if presented in an non-interactive way I don't see it as a problem, especially if you skip them in later playthroughs. If I'm into the story I really don't mind putting down my controller to watch a cutscene that's interactive or not.

But only parts of the MGS story is really good, some are good and some are blah, and all of it has way over extended dialogue sequences. I mean over extended in that they take 10 minutes to say something that could be said in 5. Kojima loves to be long winded in his storytelling style.

Well, it's like Corp said, to each his own. I think more or less all the MGS story is great. It's overblown and slow paced at times, but that doesn't bother me at all
