Zak Penn: Insightful interview

Plain and simple this guy's involvment points to a fun movie that won't be anything special. Still I'm pretty sure I'll perfer it over Ang Lee's.

I can see where you could assume this but at the same time he did compare to the Bourne (Matt Damon) movies which were not so see-through plots that had good movement. Louis needs to take lessons from Sam Raimi IMO because he created the most dynamic comic movies with Spider-man. Let's just hope for the best and see what they can do!

Lets not make this a SR vs. X3 thread, or an X3 sucked one please. There are millions of those on this site. Speak your peace there.

As for his comments, he lost me when he said BB was in continuity with Batman. How can you think that? That is idiocy. Batman Forever would have been more appropriate, and I hope that is what he meant. I like the Alien to Aliens comparison though. I loved the first Hulk film, and don't want to see a reboot this early in the game. Vague sequel is fine.

I 100% agree.

Batman Begins to Batman 89, is absolutely nothing like Aliens to Alien.

Begins was a restart, with the intention of making it's complete seperation from the other series clear.

Aliens on the other hand was definitely a sequel. Same lead actor (s), same lead "villains", events directly referenced from the first film in the second.

Maybe he never saw Batman Begins, or perhaps he was misquoted. Or maybe he was just plain drunk.

I guess we'll find out in about 14 months.

my opinion will never change, so lets movie on.

I love your Freudian slip! Forget X3 and let's movie on to Hulk!

As someone else said earlier, Superman Returns would have been a MUCH better comparison.

But Superman Returns is generally defined as an unoriginal rehash film that was poorly paced as well. Why would anyone want to compare or emulate it?

Unless the CGI is a complete miss, how can an epic Hulk Vs Abomination battle not be anything but special?!?

Ha ha thanks

Not really, it was loved by critics and at least half the fan base, including me, loved it as well.

More from Zak Penn:

Writer-director Zak Penn is at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this week to promote his new movie The Grand, but during his visit the man who helped write such films as X2 and X3 also proved willing to talk a bit about his various upcoming superhero movies. First off, he acknowledged today that rumors placing the Abomination as the villain in the next Hulk film are true… sort of.

"On The Hulk, one of the big discussions has been -- God, I hope I don't get in trouble for this -- the villain is going to be this character from the comics, the Abomination, who will not be called the Abomination out loud in the film because it's a silly, silly name," laughs Penn, who wrote the film. "It just is; it's so hard to work in. 'Hey, what should we call that guy?' 'He's an abomination!'"

In classic Marvel Comics continuity, the character was an Eastern Bloc spy who, like the Hulk, was transformed into a green-skinned, ultra-strong monster after getting a blast of radiation. Penn is fairly tightlipped about details regarding the film version of the character, but he does reveal a bit about the film's technical approach to him.

"It's definitely not all CGI," he says of the character. "Marvel will release casting when it happens. I don't even actually know right now. I'm sure it will come out soon. … But one of the things we talked about with the effects people, who had done X3 as well, is that when this guy transforms, he's not used to having these properties. Like he's much heavier, and we talked about how when he walks down the sidewalk, his weight destroys the sidewalk and he's tripping. [It's all about] the humanization of these kinds of superhero characters, showing the effects physics may actually have on [them]."

Penn says that he just finished his third draft of the script a couple of weeks ago for director Louis Leterrier (The Transporter) and star Edward Norton and that the production end of things is more or less "off and running." And as for comparisons to Ang Lee's Hulk film from 2003? Penn seems fairly frank on that matter.

"I think that Ang Lee is a fantastic director and there's incredible, incredible stuff in the first movie, but I don't think that it captured the things that are interesting about the Hulk," says Penn. "One of the things that appealed to me as kid about reading The Hulk is in no way is the Hulk a superhero story. It is simply not. Spider-Man is a superhero. He puts on a costume and he fights crime. The Hulk is a Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein horror comic. That's what it is, period. He's a man cursed with turning into his repressed id, that's it. And to me, that's a very powerful idea. Cronenberg's The Fly is one of my favorite movies ever made, literally I think it's a fantastic film. And to me, that [Hulk] film was not made -- the first Hulk was not that film. It was not about the torment of being a person who cannot afford to feel anxiety in modern culture, which is to me the strength and power of The Hulk movie. Other things were done, they did some cool s--t, whatever, great in its own way. But we didn't make that movie and Marvel wanted to make that movie and they still want to make that movie and now we are."

The casting of Norton as Banner has Penn as excited as many fans, apparently.

"Ed Norton playing that role," laughs Penn. "Fight Club is kind of about a guy who's a lot like Bruce Banner. So I think that's the goal, to go back and make that Hulk movie that didn't get made. And as to why now as opposed to later … it has more to do with Marvel as a company and the fact that they started their own studio, etc., etc. I think if they had made that movie and failed, we wouldn't be making the sequel."

way to piss off the fan base

That guy just doesnt have a clue does he.

i really dont care about the name, Hulk wasnt called Hulk in the movie more than once or twice, I just hope he gets the character right, f**k the name.

It would be easy to drop the name in without it coming as stupid though. Just have him talking to Bruce saying something like "You, you can change back, but me, i have to remain this....this.....abomination."

I'm sorry, but if you can mention the Green Goblin, Toad, The Penguin, Dr.Doom or even Hulk, Hellboy and Dr. Strange in a CB movie, you can mention The Abomination.

I really think this will be the action pack popcorn movie everyone wanted the first one to be...Just have the Hulk smash stuff...I like Ang Lee's Hulk movie since it wasn't all about smashing everything in sight.

I will just love it if it will be just "smash-action-adrenaline-stuff"... but, damn, I DON'T WANT A RE-START, A RE-DO or stuff like this! :whatever:

at least the fans can't call him AINO when they don't like his look:woot:

i'm still waiting for AICN to get the script from somewhere and review it. I hope they do but seeing as how they havent done one for IM, i doubt it :(

Well yeah, thats why i loved Ang's movie, it wasnt just a generic or typical action movie, like i think this one will be.

I predict that the Abomination name will be used in some form, even if it's some tabloid newspaper reference..

I understand what Zak is saying about Abomination not being called Abomination in the film, he will probably be refered to Blonsky. You gotta remember that in Ang's Hulk, the name Hulk was only mentioned once I think and that was by Bruce. Talbot called Hulk Bruce, so did Betty. The military called him target green or something a long those lines.

I also like what was said about Blonsky not being used to the power, etc when he transforms.

When he said Abomination will not be fully CGI, I think he is talking about the transformation, they are using a mixture of CGI and prosthetics.

I think this movie is gonna rock! I really hope it will challenge the Spiderman franchise.

The military called him "Angry Man."

well if th hulk could talk, he would call himself hulk

so that solves that problem.

just have a scene were blonksy goes all

"NO...NO! NO! EMIL BLONSKY IS DEAD! I AM JUST....AN...ABOMINATION"

NICE!! I like that!! That could work with the proper actor!

That would be all good but somehow I am not geting my hopes up as it is more probable that I would be dissappointed rather then happily surprised. :(

In any case, all we can do is hope and so far what we are sure about is mostly good.

Zak Penn,

The Abomination, who will not be called The Abomination 'cause it's a silly silly name. It is, it's such a hard name to work in, like 'hey, what should we call that guy he's an abomination!'
http://www.comingsoon.net/blog/2007/...r_hir.php#more

Its this kind of crap that ticks me off about these writers & directors & Avi Arad lets them do it!

Why can't they have a military guy blurt out Blonsky's become an Abomination. But I'm really really worried they make Blonsky into a Bin Laden Terrorist.:wow: I don't want to be reminded of 911 everytime I see the Abomination in the movie. They better keep him an Eastern European spy!
