The way Isak is behaving you kinda hope Liverpool pulls out because they don't want to sign a big baby and then he's left to either crawl back or sent to the U21's. Still expect Liverpool to come in again though.

Liverpool don't really need him either, they enquired for Isak & must have effectively been told in no uncertain terms to f-off & that it wasn't happening, they then switched targets & got Ekitike a week or two later for big money. I'm sure they'd like to have him to strengthen their strength, but they've no reason to get themselves held to a ransom if the two clubs valuation are worlds apart.

It will be very hard for him to ever play for Newcastle again with what's seemingly went on & how he's behaved. I would imagine that the only way he plays for them again is if he commits to signing a new contract effectively committing himself to the club, but with an agreeable release clause being inserted.

Where's our resident Newcastle supporter @Iceman to weigh in on this? Not seen him post in a while.

Isak is great don't get me wrong but with 80m spent on Ekitike I feel like Liverpool could spend those 120-130m more wisely like getting 2 great players for that price. If you look at Ekitike as the Darwin Nunez replacement then with Diaz leaving for Bayern and Jota's tragic passing they are still light in attack. However it feels like a versatile winger/striker would be smarter, plus they're still light in defense. Seems Guehi might come in but we'll see.

I think it sucks if Isak's behavior rewards him a 300k / week contract at Liverpool and he can just keep on trucking like nothing happened. We see this kind of behavior more and more these days and it's such a sad state the sport is in.

Just read in another thread @Iceman is dealing with some family issues but is ok. Hopefully back one day. :flex:

Liverpool comes back from 2-2 to make it 4-2. Still not super convincing and defensively they show flaws.

Yeah not surprise Liverpool got the job at home done opening day. Defense doesnt look as strong as before but they have so much going forward it may not be an issue for the league at least.

Villa and Newcastle 0-0 at HT and Wrexham 1-1 at HT.

Villa and Newcastle started with a point a piece. 0-0

Wrexham finding the championship a little harder going down 1-3 at home to West Brom

Good wins for Spurs and Sunderland both 3-0!! Great start for both.

Bit of a worry that for West Ham getting folded by a newly promoted side with such ease. Saw most of the highlights & Sunderland ran all over them.

Thank goodness those Potter to United rumours turned out to be false, he's going to struggle to keep WHU up this season if that's the best he can get out of them.

Some good games today for the first Sunday of the season and United v Arsenal doesnt get much bigger to kick things off.

Chelsea and Forest kick off at home today against Palace and Brentford before the big one.

Really not sure what to expect this season, probably very little but at least there are plenty of new faces to take a look at today to see if there is any sort of hope this season. Arsenal will fancy their chances and want to get off to a good start to keep up with everyone early doors and with a few new signings themselves they might think they have enough now.

Today will be all about Sekso and Gyokeres no doubt, it will be interesting to see if either can make an impact on debut or if need time settle. Match winners could come from all sorts of places though. Just hope its a good game and Onana doesnt ruin it for us. :funny: :grimace:

Today can go either way. Arsenal are favorites because they are expected to win the league. Anything better than a loss should be good for us but for me I just want a good performance regardless of the outcome. Show me something that gives me hope and faith in this season.

Of all the big money signings Chelsea have made in the last 4 or 5 years, I think Caicedo is the best. Just quietly goes about his game, works hard, energetic, gets stuck in without being a foul magnet, neat & tidy on the ball. You don't read about him being a dip**** behind the scenes or acting the fool in London. He's one of those players that receives little credit despite being the backbone of a team.

I think they paid £100m for him, in today's market that has been worth every penny for them IMO.

On the United front Sesko doesn't make the starting 11, we've went with Cunha - Mount - Mbeumo as the trio. I think you'll end up seeing Mount dropping into midfield creating a trio of Casemiro - Mount - Fernandes with Cunha/Mbeumo being the main attacking threat. Interesting to see how it works, it looked alright against Fiorentina to be fair. We looked quite dynamic with our shape which helped us create holes & space.

A draw would be a decent result for both teams but I expect Arsenal to win this one.

Kinda sad result at half time because I do think we've been the better team. Doesn't matter when you got such bad goalkeepers sadly.

So, season is under way, I watched the Super Cup the other night, Spurs look a more compact outfit, even if PSG did eventually break through and take it to penalties, and then they comfortably beat Burnley. I thought Liverpool looked shakey defensively but have the firepower to get out of tough situations, and Bournemouth actually played really well. Newcastle and Villa both looked okay in patches but blunt in attack, and City got off to a perfect start against Wolves with Reijnders having a good game and Cherki netting. I thought Chelsea looked lethargic and short on creativity against a well organised Palace side, that pose a threat on the counter.

We got off to a disappointing start, even though I actually thought we played quite well in spells and Arsenal barely threatened us, they've actually become a very unlikeable team with the constant time wasting and ****housery. I thought Mount, Cunha and Mbeumo all looked lively up top and Dorgu and De Ligt also had good games, it was just a feeling that we weren't going to score, I honestly feel it's PTSD for us fans after last season, we need to see this team bagging week in and week out to get any kind of confidence, and sadly today wasn't the day, but you can see the threat Cunha and Mbeumo bring, and once Amad came on we added more attacking intent, just wasn't our day.

Obviously we should have gotten a point though, the goal we conceded was basically an own goal from Bayindir, he's as hopeless as Onana, hopefully we get a keeper in the next 2 weeks as the 2 clowns we've got will cost us double figures worth of points this season with their weaknesses. Midfield wasn't great either, Bruno looks lost in there at times when we don't have the ball, but I'd say Casemiro had a decent first half, then Ugarte came on and was awful, it's a glaring issue that needs some attention before the window shuts.

No Onana but still the United keeper managed to ruin it for us then. All the talk of Gyokeres and Sesko in the end didnt amount to much meaning for this game as both look like they will need some time to settle into their respective sides and it really came down to Raya v Whoever the hell was in goal for us today.

I will give us we did look a little better I guess and Mbeumo looked our most lively player but we still lacked a bit of cohesion and composure in the final 3rd, we were crossing to nobody at times and hopefully Sesko can be that man but it might take time. We need to get some goals and points next time out though to start building some momentum, a point today would have been a great start and kind of deserved but man not having a proper keeper is going to hurt us and will shoot any confidence we might build otherwise and the midfield still needs work.

It is only 1 game and was a tough side in Arsenal who will, ok didnt play amazing themselves, be happy with the 3 points and move on, but we need to gel quickly to get some confidence back. Fulham away next week is a game we will see how much better we actually are and what sort of season its going to be.

We were awful today. United were by far the better team. Nothing has changed on our side since last season. If we play like that against Liverpool, City and Newcastle we will get smoked!

I feel more frustrated by this loss than if Arsenal had a clear victory. Not saying we deserved the win but we did not deserve a loss at all. Extra frustrating that the goal came from our goalkeeper having 0 presence in the box and the corner just being a free goal.

What sucks about this is Arsenal get 3p despite playing awful, they'll go on to smoke Leeds next week and the victory parade will be in full force meanwhile we have a tough away game to Fulham who I expect to put up a better fight than Arsenal did today.

Just a ****ty feeling despite us playing well.

Its hard to judge things after one game sometimes, teams can improve and get worse, you may look back at this and see it as a not great performance but got the job done, those points might add up at the end.

I understand though you can only judge on what you see today really and what came before last season at the moment, it does seem like a make or break season for Arteta as much as it does Amorim.

Perhaps once Gyokeres gets used to the team things might improve and look a little more fluid than they did today.

I think the next two games will tell us more about United. If we can put in that performance against Fulham and Burnley you would expect better results and things will start to pick up. If we tail off against them and cant raise our game then we have issues.

The defeat was extremely harsh on us today, I thought we played quite well overall. We looked relatively quick & sharp going forward, dynamic as well which was good to see creating confusion for Arsenal's defenders/midfield as to who exactly they should be picking up. Ultimately though in the end they were well organised & dug in, but for that & a few good saves from Raya we'd have had at least a point but in reality we played well enough to win.

Arsenal barely threatened us to be honest, de Ligt had a monstrous game. Did fantastic on Gyokeres who we know is a handful on his day, he hardly gave him any chance to get into the game. Was quick to close him down on the few chances he received the ball to feet & I don't think he beat him once in the air. Arsenal's biggest threat was the set pieces they put right on top of the goalkeeper & our own stupidity, largely from Bayinder playing absolutely mind numbing passes into players that have Arsenal players breathing down their neck at the edge of our own penalty box, he did it 2 or 3 times, into Casemiro & de Ligt.

Mbeumo & Cunha both looked good & like they'll be a handful for any teams defenders. Cunha grew into the game & definitely looked better when he was picking up the ball from deeper & driving as opposed to leading the line. Mbeumo looked good throughout, took up on the right & central a few times looking comfortable with either. Sesko played the last 25 & didn't really have much impact, few promising pieces of hold up play & touches but struggled to really get involved.

The midfield was worrying, Mount played well just as he did towards the end of last season, hopefully he can stay injury free, if he can I'd have no qualms about him having a future within the squad as his versatility can be useful in a pinch.
Casemiro was worrying, he had a few nice touches & some lovely on the eye passes in the first half, but it was painful trying to watch him try to run. When Ugarte came on despite him having the intelligence & decision making of a goldfish, he provided a lot more energy & I basically felt a lot more comfortable that attacks would be stopped with him than I did Casemiro.. admittedly some were stopped with unnecessary fouls, but still.

Fernandes was mostly alright, in possession he was fine, a lot more safe & tidy than he ordinarily is when playing more advanced. Out of possession though, he's a liability. Was beat a few times so effortlessly it looked like he was a cone from a dribbling drill on the training pitch. I'm not convinced on him playing that deep at all, not without compromises being made elsewhere. In pre-season a few times we did set up with various midfield & attacking shapes/combinations, I don't think Amorim intends us to have a static formation makeup outside of 3 CB's & 2 WB's. Everything else seems dependant on who he has available.

Bayinder was poor & I've seen enough of him to know Onana likely won't feel threatened by him in terms of losing his place despite he to being terrible. The goal was so poor I didn't even know what to say when it went in, he's 6'4 or 6'5, he's a big lad & he can use his hands. I'd have rather seen him try to forcibly punch or catch the ball & make a balls up of it than doing what he did, which was feeble. Also a few crosses he claimed from open play, he was unchallenged & palmed them onto the ground which is a massive red flag for a goalkeeper if you do that more than once. Felt totally uncomfortable with him having the ball at his feet when we're trying to play short passes out from the back, mainly because of a few of the decisions he made to play suicide passes into players at the edge of our box.

Despite the negatives I was encouraged overall in spite of the result, I'd really love us to sign a midfielder & goalkeeper before the end of the window though.

I think its safe to say the goalkeeper made the difference today. Bayindir let in a very preventable goal and while Raya didn't have a barrage of shots, he still made 2 or 3 great saves. If you swap the keepers but the game played out the same way we would have won.

And I know Bayindir is only nr2 but I genuinely have 0 faith that Onana would have done much better and that's a problem. Do we just stick Heaton in goal?

At this stage I genuinely think it would be better to play rush goalie with an extra player on the pitch rather than any of our actual keepers.

Goalkeeper is a big worry, just a normal goalkeeper that can go several games between major blunders can earn you an extra 3-9 points a season, a good reliable goalkeeper could earn you potentially more.
We currently have 2 poor goalkeepers that are costing us points & games more than anything else.

I find it very hard to believe that there isn't a goalkeeper available somewhere that wouldn't be an improvement on Onana or Bayinder.

Agreed, Arsenal are a difficult team to play, they're a bit like an old school Mourinho side, great on set pieces, defensively strong and lots of gamesmanship. Fulham and Burnley will be a test of whether this new forward line can get the job done in the type of games against midtable sides and lower table sides where we constantly dropped points last season due to an inability to craft and score enough goals.

De Ligt was excellent, he dominated Gyokeres and marshaled the back line really well, and Yoro is constantly improving, he's our best CB on the ball. We absolutely need a keeper and a midfielder before the window shuts. Like you say, there's plenty of solid keepers that would be an upgrade on the 2 calamity Jane's we currently have. I'd love us to have gotten Baleba but there are options like Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, or perhaps Stiller from Stuttgart or Larsson from Frankfurt.
