⚽ Football (Soccer)

Yeah perhaps, we shall see I guess, probably needs a goal to settle down and get some confidence and get up and running. Doesnt look the part yet but has time on his side at least.

At least its an international break now so he has a some time to recover before we even play again anyway.
Yeah I feel like we see it in other clubs too. Late signings who don't get a pre-season with the new team only really has cameos in the first 3-4 games before the International break and then it's kind of a different situation after that. I don't expect him to start at City away mostly because I think we'll set up with Bruno-Mount-Mbuemo as our front 3 (assuming Cunha is out). Then we have Chelsea which is a similar tough game but I would expect him to start against Brentford at home on the 27th at the very least.

Liverpool - Arsenal today, should be fun.

Yeah thats the thing it seems unlikely he will be starting for some time yet with City and Chelsea up next its going to be a long time before he gets a run of games in the Prem to get used to it. Its not all about one player of course as Mbuemo and Cunha both look really good buys and have hit the ground running at least but it would be nice to get your striker up and running earlier to release some of the pressure and expectation but it will work out the way its meant to no doubt.

At least we can relax for the IB for a bit now we are bit further up the table but those next two games are going to be really tough.

We played some better attacking football yesterday but we're still a donut in the middle of the park, the Bruno and Casemiro midfield is the stuff of nightmares, and we still lost a 2 goal lead at home to the poorest side in the league. Between the lack of signings and Amorim's rigid system, I think we'll be lucky to finish inside the top 10 if he doesn't go soon.

To make matters worse, we seem to be moving away from Lammens and towards that overrated nobhead Emi Martinez, another clown keeper, and to top it all off, Connor Gallagher as the midfield option, another technically average CM who's not particularly good at anything but runs around a lot.

I feel like the Martinez links are just a diversion to put pressure on Antwerp. Villa reportedly want 40m for him and we wanted to pay 15m or something similar. That link just screams "Hey if you don't want to sell Lammens we got options" when realistically Lammens is who they want. I still chuckle at these articles phrasing it like "Man Utd think Lammens could provide a challenge for Onana and Bayindir in goal". A traffic cone could provide a challenge for those two! Onana with a howler performance mid week and Bayindir certainly gifted the 2-2 goal yesterday.

As far as the midfield goes I think this will be our main topic through the whole season. I like both Cunha and Mbeumo so far as signings but we might have been better off only signing one of them, played Bruno as a #10 and signed Wharton or someone to play in the midfield. But we had a lot of glaring areas that needed fixing and I'm actually surprised how much we have spent so far because I expected probably this transfer window minus Sesko.

To be honest its hard to see Amirom still in the job post Xmas, we aren't going to get much from the next two games, so 1 win in 5 is such a poor start its hard to see us getting anything higher than 7th/8th at best anyway. A new keeper would help who is at least decent but the midfield is a wasteland that will get exposed against decent sides (and some average ones too!!).

City lose 2-1 to Brighton, City below us in the table. :weeping:

West Ham get a much needed 3-0 win over Forest.

The way City have started their season maybe there is hope for us?

Liverpool - Arsenal was really boring but you can't complain about the winning goal.

Liverpool with the 1-0 over Arsenal. Looking like another one sided title race again at the moment. Nobody can seem to step up to Liverpool at the moment.

The manager is a coward. Liverpool were there to be got at and there was an opportunity for us to make a statement and take the game to them. All the attacking talent he now has at his disposal and he goes there and starts 3 DM's.

He has a bit of that Pep to him. Outthinks himself.

So in the shadow of all headlines being about Man Utd in shambles.

City with 2 losses from 3 games and beneath us (!) in the table. Newcastle without a win from 3 games. Aston Villa with 1 point out of 9 just got hammered by Palace 3-0 yesterday at their own home ground.

It would be nice and refreshing for once if we could get more 'doom and gloom' talk about other clubs and not just Man Utd. I know Man Utd sells and that's the clickbait but City has snuck under the radar and it kinda feels like nobody actually cares? If this was Arsenal or Liverpool with 2 losses in the first 3 games I feel there would be A LOT more talk about it.

I think I joked earlier on how maybe we should assemble an Avengers of former managers and together they might bring enough to the table for it to work. There's now 3 of them on the market.

Let Amorim cook with his system, bring in Ten Hag for the defense, Ole for the "vibes" and attack. Let Mourinho do the press conferences and we got something. Could still do with LVG working the midfield.

Been reading up on Ten Hag and it seems to be an internal war with the board more then anything he actually did. Crazy after what I heard in the summer. Everyone seemed really excited about it in the media.

I know the headlines will be all about "Man Utd needed a last minute penalty to beat Burnley at home" and supporters of other teams will take the piss and I get it. But watching this game you see us create chance upon chance but it's Zirkzee or Amad hitting it over, or Bruno hitting it just outside the box. Sesko had a decent header as well. And then on the other side Burnley have like 2 chances all game but because of our goalkeeper they get 2 goals. For me the 2-2 goal is one of those goals that simply doesn't happen if you have a decent keeper. Fumbling a rebound straight out to a Burnley player like that is just not acceptable.

So it really felt like a 4-0 much more than a 3-2 but in the end it's the effectiveness in both penalty boxes that matter. Much needed 3 points and hopefully it does something positive. But I was really hoping for us to get a solid win that you couldn't question under scrutiny.

You aren't wrong all the headlines are still about having our blushes spared & pundits like Paul Merson & Tim Sherwood trying to act like we were all over the place. Absolute rubbish, anybody who watched the game it's entirety should know this wasn't the case, we actually played well for most of the game, created a dozen or so good chances & Burnley really weren't any sort of consistent meaningful threat going forward for most of the game.

They had three sniffs of goal & scored from two of them, the first was a Dalot brainfart for some reason tucking in ridiculously close to de Ligt leaving Larsen acres of space to pick a space for a cross.. which he did.

The second was another goalkeeping blunder IMO, messy, nervous scramble from a long throw & flick on, shot straight at Bayinder who palms it onto his legs straight back into the danger area & into the feet of Anthony.

Outside of that, we were in control & actually played some good attacking football, particularly in that first half we really should have scored more than one with the second half being more about managing the game & twisting the knife than what it degenerated into which was a mad scramble to get the second, then the third after Burnley equalised twice against the run of play.

Yeah a last minute dodgy pen to grab 3 points against Burnley is hardly going to silence the doubters though. Its not great but at least it moves us up the table and above a few heading into the International break, would be a whole lot worse without the win. Its worrying Sesko doesnt seem to be liked very much already or trusted by Amorim. I hope he's not just Hojlund v2.0 but hasnt really hit the ground running.

Sesko is effectively another project striker, he's further along than Hojlund but he is someone we're banking on becoming a star rather than already being one.. big risk for the money paid, when we probably needed a midfielder more & could have just given Hojlund another year.

The team needs to realise when he plays, we have the ability to go more direct, he's got more power & size than Hojlund so there will be CB's he can target for bullying with the ball at his feet or in a foot race.

Probably even more importantly, we need to float a few more crosses into the box & see if he can get after them. He has an absolutely ridiculous vertical jump combined with his height, he can be a massive problem for defenders to deal with, actually near scored against Burnley. I'd like to see us play a few more crosses into the box when he plays as opposed to trying to play our way in.

I was a bit surprised seeing Zirkzee come on for Cunha when he went down against Burnley though, although in fairness Zirkzee actually did well so maybe Amorim was right bringing him on at that point, although it's just odd that Sesko wasn't brought on until later. Only thing I can think off is maybe he's not fully fit. He reportedly had cramp during the Grimsby game which is why he allegedly didn't take a penalty until 10th.. or perhaps maybe the club are trying to avoid the same mistake as Hojlund by thrusting all the pressure onto him immediately & destroying the lads confidence.

Glad the Lammens deal has went across the line, much prefer the potential of signing him than signing Martinez who is a ****house AND he's not far off being as blunder happy as our current dynamic duo of goalkeepers.

Sancho's been a crazy disappointment. Even after the Dortmund loan I'd have taken him back for a second (or third? I've lost count) chance at that point as I do like the intelligence of his game in comparison to the brainless style of Garnacho/Rashford displayed at times, but after the Chelsea loan with some of his snide digs on social media to the club & his general reluctance to make any sort of move happen for himself this window despite the club being willing to take a massive lose on him.. it's crazy disappointing to see the decisions he's made that have led him to seemingly Villa on loan & probably released on a free next summer.

Antony, don't hate him, we've sold him for a **** deal & I doubt Betis are that poor. Even if they are, there should have been incentives thrown in there that, if completed, would give them a few years before they'd have to pay them out to get the deal closer to £30m.
I'd be amazed if we saw anything substantial on that 50% sell on clause.

Garnacho was another **** deal. £40m + 10% sell on fee, crazy low. Chelsea have pulled our pants down with that one, particularly the sell on fee. Even if he under performs, could quite easily see Chelsea still being able to flog him for £60m+ making themselves a tidy profit.

Busy final transfer day all round then. Glad we got shot of the likes of Antony and Sancho in the end, Hojlund is more of sad one as it feels like he's still young and could turn out good, hope that one doesnt come back to bite us. Garnacho is another who I liked at times and thought he had great potential but clearly Amirom and him didnt get along so had to go.

As for the keeper it seemed like Martinez this morning was going to be it but turned out to be Lammens in the end. Cant say I know anything about him so I hope he isnt just the cheap option and someone that turns out to be a bargain, I guess time will tell.

Its been an odd window overall, some good, some bad and some just note sure about. Better than the days of long drawn out "saga's" for once and saviours that turned out to be anything but, Amirom really needs things to improve quickly though otherwise he might not be in charge of the next transfer window anyway and we might be at square one.

Happy we got Lammens and hope he will be good for us! After our run of keepers recently I'm really hoping he turns out to be another Schmeichel/VDS because that would be really nice. Feeling secure with your goalkeeper goes a long way.

With Sesko and the striker situation I feel like it's linked to our weak midfield. When we start more of a 'defensive' front trio (to me that means having Mount as the third rather than a striker like Sesko) it almost feels like a compensation for having Bruno as a CM and an aging Casemiro. So it's a bit like "Our midfielders need some help covering ground so we'll provide more of that from the forwards".

I feel like with a stronger CM pairing you could afford someone like Sesko who might not work as hard defensively but will offer those qualities in attack. I really hope they work on finding him and linking up with him in training though. I know we've gone back and forth on Hojlund but the one thing I will say somewhat in his defense is he could go games without getting any balls to work with.

Even if Sesko has an edge over Hojlund it wont mean much if players aren't getting him involved. Look at Gyökeres so far at Arsenal. 2 goals in 3 games but he's already been criticized for not having an impact, yet if you look at the Liverpool game for example he barely got any balls to work with the whole game. This is not the era of Henry or Ruud picking up the ball at the halfway line and just making a goal out of nothing. You need good link up and finding those passes in behind the lines.

I read the news about Onana coming back after the vacation wanting a new contract and a pay rise and I almost spit my water out. Honestly if there's any club in the world where you could be terrible and then have the audacity to ask for more money - and potentially get your way, it would be Man Utd.

Maybe they could have made it an incentives contract - more money for more shots saved, that kind of thing.
