🇪🇺 Discussion: The European Union

The thing they don't want is being told the tax rate they will have to give businesses moving into their country.

They thought they got rid of that kind of thing in 1921.

Ireland just royally got screwed....

Reuters said:
The United States would be ready to support the extension of the European Financial Stability Facility via an extra commitment of money from the International Monetary Fund, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.

There are a lot of people talking about that. I think the European Commission has talked about that," said the U.S. official, commenting on enlarging the 750 billion euro ($980 billion) EU/IMF European stability fund. "It is up to the Europeans. We will certainly support using the IMF in these circumstances."

"There are obviously some severe market problems," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "In May, it was Greece. This is Ireland and Portugal. If there is contagion that's a huge problem for the global economy."

The remarks foreshadow a visit to Europe this week by a U.S. Treasury envoy who is expected to visit Berlin, Madrid and Paris to hold talks on the ramifications of the debt crisis.

The developments have echoes of the pressure applied by Washington on European capitals last May to create the near $1 trillion EFSF safety net that was last week used to rescue Ireland after its banking crisis spiraled out of control.

The IMF, whose biggest single shareholder is the United States, has committed 250 billion euros to the EFSF.

While reluctant to dictate to Europe how it should address the unfolding debt crisis, the U.S. government is growing concerned about the global fallout of Europe's predicament.

U.S. Treasurys' prices fell and the euro strengthened against the dollar on Wednesday after the news that the United States would be prepared to support an enlarged EFSF.

Germany, whose leaders have expressed frustration at the market backlash against their plans to solve the euro zone's debt problems, does not want to make the stability fund larger.

So one economically strapped country will try to prop up many more economically strapped countries. With what? There are no more rich countries to help the poor countries. Except maybe China but they arent taking any more debt.

Oy.

We are buying Euros!!! Best investment ever.

Ugfugly, please find a less graphic way of giving your opinion.

Sure. I thought I'd gotten away from the no good worthless lazy slobs on the dole when I moved to America but still they are finding a way to put their hands in my pocket.

If this goes through and the US government gives money to bail out the EU I will truly blow a gasket.

London is might crazy right now. There's a huge riot about college tuition rates outside of Parliament.

I could be wrong, but I've always gotten the impression that riots in England are as common as sliced bread.

Only when soccer is involved. If there is a non-soccer riot, you know something bad is going down.

though i don't condone the *******s who have started the fighting i don't blame them there are looking to raise college to around £9000 to £10,000 a year

Times like this makes me glad that I'm done with college already. I feel bad for today's students, who have to deal with out-of-control tuition fee, and even if they graduate the degree isn't as valuable as it once was anyway, plus they will be entering a job market that is stagnate. It's quite the chaotic era we have now.

They have been rioting on and off for the past month.

They trashed Conservative goverment HQ a few weeks ago. The worst part is that it only effects English students in Britain. Welsh students and Scottish students don't have to pay the hire fees.

LOL! Rioting on & off?

Rioter: I am sick of this sh** *throws garbage can through window*. Alright who is up for lunch? Wanna go loot a pub? All this rage has got me thirsty. We can continue later, maybe?

You're telling me. I consider myself lucky cause I'll be finishing my JD in May with ONLY about 60K in debt. I have friends who are going to have triple that in debt.

Well damn. Aren't there any good schools they can attend in Scotland & Wales rather than riot?

The three biggest reason college students riot:

tuition increases, championship loss, and championship win.
