šŸŽ¾ The Tennis Thread - Part 5

Third set goes by in a flash, as the rallies go by quickly. Why are they going by with haste? Because Djokovic is swinging for the fences. Djokovic is emboldened by the hostile Parisian crowd, and yep, the unflappable chip-on-his-shoulder Djokovic has shown up in full force in set three. Federer has few moments and has been rendered to little more than a bystander. Merely standing to see if Djokovic’s rage-fueled cuts stay inside the lines. And they frequently do. Federer appears shaken, and the pressure is on for him to finish this match in the fourth set, before the sinking sun causes the match to be postponed

Funny moment in the fourth set, on serve at 3-3. Federer is serving lights out but Djokovic gets into a rally and is just absolutely punishing Federer with body blows. Federer is hanging by a thread with some of stabbing gets. Then Federer, storming across the red clay once more, hits a flicking backhand pass to win the point. It’s an amazing shot and a well earned point, but the announcer exclaims in disbelief ā€œThat’s grandpa!?ā€ Of course Federer is still around eight years later. Maybe he’s great grandpa now.

Little need be said about set four. It resembles more of a grass court march through routine service holds than a clay court bloodbath. That is until Federer serves at 4-4. Federer is in for a fight as he’s not landing any first serves, and Djokovic is right there to make him suffer for it. When Djokovic breaks with a thermonuclear forehand, Federer slumps and the camera pans to Djokovic who appears fresh and fit. And oh my, Djokovic has CRAZY EYES. He literally looks like a man under the influence of crack cocaine but with the focus of a helping of adderall. But then another crazy thing happens.

Federer, playing tight for two sets now, is somehow liberated to swing freely in an effort to stay in the set. Federer is now the one taking his backhand up the line and hitting a vicious forehand to break back. This has turned into something quite powerful and passionate. I’m also getting my first sense that this match is personal between these two, and that they truly don’t like each other. It’s something I already knew before the match was ever played, but this is starting to feel like it means more than just winning a match. It’s quite intense between these two greats. Djokovic wipes his brow and again stares into the hostile crowd with those crazy eyes.

At 5-5, Djokovic is a man possessed. His swings have a new thunderous thump to them, as he is swinging from his shoe tops. Most noticeably in the auditory department, is djokovics grunt. It is now a two-part, a large inhale with sounds like ā€œvoooā€ and then an even more massive exhale through the swing, which just sounds like pure rage. Indeed Federer is a fight at 5-5, as Djokovic is throwing everything at Federer to break him. Federer manages to hold, saving one break point with one of the loudest ā€œCOME ON’sā€ you will ever hear. This match feels like two bitter enemies.

At 6-5 it is Federer pressing to break. Djokovic bends but there is no break. Djokovic’s grunts again take on a new form. Winning a point at deuce with his own backhand down the line (shot of the year in 2011) Djokovic hangs onto the grunt in an almost celebratory tone. This match is nuts. Did I mention it is intense?

In the tiebreak Federer manages to hit a dropper that appears to nestle into the court and not even bounce. Federer tried another dropper later which manages to nestle into the net. The crowd gasps in horror. It’s 3-3 in the tiebreak. Djokovic manages to take a massive cut that lands into and rocks the net, 4-3 Fed. The crowd roars in delight. Federer with an ace and an unreturnable, it’s 6-3, match points. The crowd is orgasmic. Djokovic manages a let cord on the next rally which elicits loud screams of terror from a few women in the crowd. It is an auditory experience. Djokovic ace. 6-5. Last match point for Federer. And it’s a big ace down the middle. Federer wins.

The crowd erupts, with literally every fan I see throwing their arms into the air. And they keep going for quite a while. Federer, for his part, wags his finger saying he is #1. Then more improbably screams as loud as he can ā€œYESSSS!ā€ All of this before meeting Djokovic at the net. I’m not sure it would be too far off to say this semifinal win was maybe the most satisfying of his career. The win did not lead to a championship (Federer would lose again to Nadal that Sunday) but its hard to look at Federer’s demeanor and say this was not his favorite victory.

This was a hell of a match and a good bit of forgotten history. Djokovic’s 41 match win streak is still one of the greatest feats in tennis and his 2011 would continue on afterward to be great. Federer showed that he wasn’t dead yet, and is still reinventing himself. Djokovic of course, is still around too, and back dominating. Grandpas, you got to love them.

Kyrgios has so much talent, and yet he just doesnt channel it positively. He keeps acting like a brat, and i think some harsher punishment should be handed by this point. It's a shame how he acts most of the time.

So it's Roland Garros time! No huge upsets today so far. Some cool second round matches on the men's side coming up in the next couple of days: Dimitroc vs Cilic and Nishikori vs Tsonga.

Roger landed on Rafa's side of the draw. Will they win their matches and meet? (i think it would be quaterfinals). If they do, could this be the year Roger beats Rafa at RG (finally)?

Big upset today on the women's side: Martic defeated Pliskova and Klizan defeted Pouille.

Roger and Muguruza won their respective matches, and Nadal is currently playing Goffin and is up one set and one break in the second.

From the top 10 seeds, Pliskova, Bertens, Kerber, Kvitova, Svitolina all already out.

I thought he would have learned his lesson and matured by now. He's not the new kid on the block anymore.

Looking forward to this tournament getting to the later stages!

Johanna Konta makes it to the 4th round for the first time. Apparently the best performance by a Brit female since 1983.

Let’s see if she can take it a step further and get into the last 4. Would be a huge achievement. Apparently the last time a British female player managed that was in 1983.

Konta does it!

Very sold tennis from Konta. I thought Stephens would put up a tougher fight at least, but daaaarn, Konta just kicked her out of the court lol.

So Rafa dispatched Nishikori and Roger won against Wawrinka, so we'll have another chapter of Fedal lol. Is this the year that Roger is finally able to beat Rafa in RG?

Konta is looking very good this year.

And I’ll always look forward to those matches, no matter how old they get lol.

Roland-Garros:

Federer(37yo, Nadal(33 and Djokovic(32 all in the final, these guys determined to stick around, it's like going back a decade, they won't let go, all the hopeful up-comers fade, while these guys stick.
The only new young blood in here is Thiem(25, who actually looks like he's got what it takes to break into their ranks.

Nadal and Djokovic have been around a long time and yet both are still only in their early 30's.

Huge day today! Nadal vs Federer and Thiem vs Djokovic fighting for a place in the final. It sucks to be at work, ugh!

Rafa just took the first set 6-3. Now starts the second!

Woa, on the women's side the final will be between Marketa Vondrousova, who dispatched Konta, and Ashleight Barty, who won over Anisimova. So we'll have a new champion on the female side.

Yep. We've got it on. Luckily everyone into tennis here.

Lucky you lol

Wow, that was impressive from Rafa. Solid tennis to win against Roger like that. Now he waits for either Novak or Thiem, who is up a break on the first set 3-1

Thiem 1 set up against Djok. Rain for now.

Nadal on clay is still a joke. So easily the best I've seen.

He goes on beast mode for sure on clay, specially on RG.

I see play is interrupted on Thiem/Novak now, with one set a piece and Thiem up a break in the third 3-1.

Absolutely, it's the perfect surface for him to regain confidence on and find rythm, and he always peaks at RG. He was very impressive vs. Federer in their semi, and adjusted to the wind far better than Roger.

How many French opens will Nadal have won by the time he’s done?! Utter domination! Who would put up a better fight against him out of Djok and Thiem?
