10.8 - Abandoned - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Wait, am I the only one who is uncomfortable with the whole Tess being a Luthor storyline?

Say what you want, but it is painfully obvious that in Bulletproof when Tess says, "I loved you, you son of a *****" she means that in a romantic, I-am-in-love-with-you kind of way.

No it does not explicitly say that, but we as viewers were clearly supposed to get the implied hint. To really believe the idea "maybe she didn't mean it like that" is just...well, stupid . It was just a way for the writers to add more drama to the show since they most likely had no idea she would end up being Lena Luthor.

Now that she is a Luthor, it's just weird. I'll keep an open mind about this storyline and if they end up surprising me, I won't have a problem admitting it. But for the moment I'm skeptical about it.

Never took it as them having something romantic between the two of them. In fact, when Tess came on the show she was introduced as his most successful protege who looked up to him in almost a fanatical fashion.

Now she may very well have had those types of feelings for Lex, but there was never anything to indicate that the two of them had been involved in that way. Tess looking in the mirror and saying "I loved you, you son of a *****!" doesnt necessarily indicate they were involved.

It does seem that the writers originally intended for her to be a past flame of Lex, ie: "the widow of Luthorcorp" upon Lex's death.

She does have a history of sleeping with powerful men for the sake of ulterior motives.

It is within the realm of possibilities that they did have a past romantic relationship. It would seem uncharacteristic of Lex to let an attractive female so close to him and not move in on her.

It's not like either of them knew they were blood related. Lex is a disturbed individual anyway. Incest isn't exactly a far cry from most of the stuff he's already done.

I can't wait to see Lex's reaction to the news in the upcoming episodes.

so let's get this straight, Clark leaves the orphange and leaves the poor kids there? Am I understanding that clearly?? He puts this girl in a room before getting captured and he nevers goes back for her??

Awesome episode! I loved Jor-El and Lara's appearance!

What do people think Desaad's role will be?

And do you think he'll have an episode focused on him like Godfrey and Granny have?

All we know so far is that he is one of Darkseid's minions who owns many fetish clubs, I wonder how he'll help bring on the apocolyplse of Darkseid?

Even thou he could have easily super speeded the girl away when he first found her instead of leaving her and THEN going after the noise.

I liked the episode too. It was rather well done.

Now, for my thoughts on it. This also answers some of the questions above.

Desaad, despite sounding a bit Irish or something, :) , is working on corrupting the bodies of the people in the city, via Lust. Also, since he's Darkseid's torturer, his owning of fetish clubs is a nice touch.
He's also the only minion of Darkseid that only worships him out of fear. Give him a chance, and he'll turn against Darkseid in a heartbeat.
After all, he killed Darkseid's girlfriend. But I think I told that story about 50 times now.

Granny will create an army of furies using her powers, and Godfrey is working on the corruption of the minds of the people in the city.

Darkseid is waging a propaganda/psychological war. He's also apparently glacially slow.

I think he saw the Earth in the 1970s, and decided to send Granny then, and then worked on Desaad later.
As long as Sleeze doesn't show up, we'll be fine. Really, his name should clue it in. :)
"Darkseid, why do you have people looking for porn?"

Man of Tomorrow

Then again, charging up to full power in the sun then lifting a Kryptonite island into space.... Superman may have access to some powers while exposed to Green K.

The incredible Hulk

No. Just...no.
Er, what's the problem here? I know I'm one of the rare few who liked Superman Returns, but it's actually comic canon that Superman can force himself to concentrate using his powers while affected by Kryptonite.

The biggest case for this is the first introduction of Metallo, in Action comics 252.
May of 1959.
Metallo traps Superman in an area with Kryptonite. Superman uses his X-Ray vision to melt through one of the bars of Kryptonite. This process took six hours!
Apparently molten Kryptonite doesn't give him a weakness to it.

Metallo then dropped dead later because he had stolen fake Kryptonite to power his heart.

So, yeah, since Smallville loves to borrow most of it's ideas from Pre-Crisis, there you go. An official comic explanation.
Also, That Metallo story was reprinted in the Showcase Superman book.
Along with the origin of Supergirl.

And a super-powered battle between Jimmy Olson and Superman.
Now that's weird. :)

But yeah, Superman can focus one of his powers to get out of trouble with Kryptonite. Or anything really.

Yeah, this was Silver Age Superman, with his planet juggling powers, but still.

Also, I'm certain that girl is fine.

Oh, and Lex would have learned that Tess was his sister long ago.
And no, he's many things, but he wouldn't have sex with his own sister.

That's a line not even Lex Luthor would cross.
I mean, unless I see evidence that Lex is an idiot, anyway. :)
Besides, we'd have to worry more about Oliver eating a bullet because he slept with a Luthor. :)
Tess:"Uh, Oliver, I'm a Luthor."
Oliver:"AHHHH!" <Pulls out a gun and shoots himself in the head>
Tess:"Awkward...do we know someone who can raise the dead?"
Clark:"I'll call Zatanna."

Lena Luthor? I guess that's someone from the comics?

Lutessa, yeah, Tess's name came from that alright. Tess is short for Lutessa.
And Tesseract.
But who names their daughter after a theoretical construct that's fourth-dimensional, I.e, Bigger on the inside then the outside?

Heh too funny :) She's probably still down in that maintenance closet yelling "Hello! Anyone? Is it OK to come out now??"

Thought the same thing. Unless the freeze breath was the only thing he had enough "juice" left to use at that distance from the Kryptonite fire pit.

No. Just...no.

It was a holographic recording from his parents last few moments on Krypton that the fortress just chose to play. No one was really being "nice"

just seems weird to me. Why now? Because lois threw out an insult? I just seemed a little to tidy

I'm confused, because I thought up until this episode that Godfrey WAS Darksied.
And Tess being a Luthor is dumb.

I think I'm on the "the writers don't know what to do with Tess anymore" bandwagon here.

I think it was a nice parallel for Lois to see a video tape message from her mother, while Clark saw a hologram recording.

As for why now, I guess it's just one of those things that needed to be activated. Though, with the way Fortress Jor-El had been, it makes me wonder why not show it sooner since it wasn't exactly the first time that Clark has turned his back on Jor-El. With that said, I think it was well done.

It's implied Darkseid is no longer possessing Godfrey, that he's now one of Darkseid's minions.

In terms of overall character development, it really came out of nowhere. Did anyone really believe Tess would be a Luthor before Lazarus?
I don't find it too hard to believe. I suspected something like it ever since her arrival in season 8. I always thought they would reveal the true connection at some point, but then they went with the "he placed a chip in her" thing.

But when Cassidy teased at Comic-Con that she would learn a secret from her past, I knew right away she was related to Lex somehow. Though I thought she a clone of his mother or something. The half-sister route they went was really good and much better, but only because they linked it to Pamela, and not the same woman who gave birth to Lucas.

It was a good episode. Only let down imo were the Furies. They shouldve made Harriet and co. from apokolips thus with increased streangth, theN I wouldve wanted Tess to be a fury. But I am ok with her being a Luthor even though I wonder why it took Lionel basically 6 years or however old Tess was to get rid of her.

Yea I still doubt tess and lex and anythinhg romantic or sexual going on in the past. Just what hulk said earlier since she seemed more like a devoted follower.

When the FOS took Lois up, what exactly was it doing to her before Clark got there?

My only real gripe with the epi is how the Jor-EL/Lara message kind of contradicts the actions of the Jor-EL "voice" in the fortress...

I mean earlier this season the "voice" of Jor-EL did pretty much give up on Clark...then now, to show Clark a message basically saying that he'll never give up on him?

And with the Granny Goodness plot, I honestly believe that these could have been split up into two separate episodes.

Having said that, overall it was pretty solid.

I think the purpose of it was to show that the "voice" Jor-El is still an A.I. with none of the "human" emotions that the real Jor-El possessed. It was to show Clark that his real father would never give up on him no matter what. It gave him a boost in confidence that he needed.

well its not really, from what we get what jorel in the message said is that the jorel ai is emotionless so it wouldnt have jorel's same ego problems. So we see now why the ai has been such a hardass to clark over the yrs. Since its only jorel's knowledge and not his emotion/compassion and all that.

Not to Nit pick, but the message Clark and Lois saw was recorded right before Krypton blew up in the 1980s. Yet Jor-el Looks exactly the same as he did when he created the Kandorian clones 20 years earlier in the 60s.

Before they showed his face I was thinking that we'd finally see Terence Stamp as Jor-El. When they showed Sands again I was like . You couldn't at least show him 20 - 25yrs older?

I knew Tess was a Luthor from the very first scene she appeared in way back when. That red hair was a dead give away in my opinion and I like her being tied in to the whole mythology.

I thought all the mummies and daddies were awesome... a couple have commented on Helen's acting, but I thought she was spot on, considering how panicked she was and desperately wanting to get her message through before disaster occurred. Great scene that made up for all the years of B.S. that A.I. Jor-el has given us.

Funniest words uttered ever on the show.....

Mr. El :lmao:

and funniest words ever written on the show.....

"Somebody Save Me"
:applaud

I really loved this episode. :hrt:
