It looks like Dr. Fenton did all she could to alert the right people to Holmes, but I bet a ton of death threats get sent to her anyway. What a culture we live in ...

I think no matter what all comes out, it won't all come together until his trial. I do wonder if they will ever move Holmes out to general population where he's being held between now and his trial.

If they do, he'll be killed just like Dahmer was.

This case is a tough one to know what direction it is going to go.....it really all depends on the expert that the defense brings in to evaluate him, and how well that expert stands under cross examination...

I'm no expert on serial killers aside from what I read in books, but I remember John Grisham's non-fictional account of the trial of Ron Keith Williamson. This is the book, but it was certainly a good insight into the way insanity pleas, death-sentences, and the Oklahoma legal system worked.

Pleading insanity isn't as easy as it is in Gotham City. Especially if you've got a problem in your noggin -_-

I find myself avoiding the news these days. It's always filled with negative stuff, and it's really heartbreaking. I realize I'm not adding much to this thread, but felt like posting my thoughts on the matter.

Since Hinkley, the insanity plea has gotten much harder to prove in most states...

The crazies just keep on comin'.

Police in Ohio have arrested a man who allegedly tried to smuggle guns, ammunition and knives into a late-night showing of "Dark Knight Rises."

Authorities say the manager of the Cleveland-area movie theater became suspicious of the man, who allegedly tried to bring a satchel into a 10pm Saturday showing of the Batman movie.

The manager reportedly alerted an off-duty cop who was working security that night ... who searched the bag -- found a Glock 9mm handgun, ammunition clips, and three knives -- and immediately alerted police.

Cops say the man, identified as 37-year-old Scott Smith, does NOT have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

According to reports, the man was arrested without incident and even offered to put the guns back into his car. Obviously, that didn't happen.

Cops later performed a search of Smith's home. It's unclear if investigators discovered anything during the sweep.

..Holy crap.

Why is this movie bringing out so many psychopaths?

I know, right? Or is it just that we are competing to see who can be the better psychopath? Attention grabbers, all of us.....

Now they're just trying for their 15 minutes.

Another nutcase has apparently been making threats against a theater on Broadway. Sounds like it's probably nothing, but Twitter has turned the NYPD down on getting the user's info.

NYPD To Subpoena Twitter After Threats Against B’way Theater Discovered

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are trying to figure out who is posting messages on Twitter threatening to carry out an Aurora-style shooting rampage at a Broadway theater.

Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said the NYPD will subpoena Twitter to order the social media site to produce the account holder’s information after the disturbing tweets were discovered by investigators.

“I might just shoot up this theater in New York,” one tweet said.

“I know they leave their exit doors unlocked,” said another.

“I got 600 people on my hit list and that’s gonna be a mass murder for real,” said a third.

“I’m serious, people are gonna die like Aurora,” said another.

Investigators with the NYPD intelligence division discovered the Twitter threats late Aug. 3 and into the early morning of Aug. 4, Browne said.

Police said it was the specific mention of the Longacre Theatre in Midtown that set off alarm bells. The theater is where Mike Tyson’s one-man show, “Undisputed Truth” is currently playing.

“You have two mass shootings now in short order,” Browne told WCBS 880′s Alex Silverman, referring to the July 20 shooting in Colo. and the more recent mass shooting of a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

Twelve people were killed and 58 others wounded in the Colo. attack when alleged shooter James Holmes walked into an Aurora movie theater during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises” and opened fire, police said.

Then on Sunday, seven people were killed, including the alleged gunman, and three others injured when police said Wade Michael Page started shooting inside a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis.

“We have somebody threatening a similar attack in New York, we want to know who that person is,” Browne said.

Browne said police contacted Twitter using a system established by the social media site for emergencies, but said Twitter denied the request for the user’s information claiming it didn’t fall under the criteria of a serious threat.

“I’m not quite sure what their level would be when this person is threatening to go into a theater and kill people. It’s certainly enough for us,” Browne said. “We’re getting a subpoena to order Twitter to produce that name.”

Rep. Steve Israel issued a statement saying he is “extremely disappointed” that Twitter has refused to release the information.

“A threat to people’s lives must always be taken seriously,” Israel said.

As the investigation continues, heavily armed Hercules teams will keep an eye on the theater as a precaution.

WCBS 880 reached out to Twitter for a response, but the company said they would not comment on the issue.

Twitter did however provide a link to their guidelines for law enforcement, which can be seen here.

We dont need copycats.

Guy should really just be taken out back and beaten senseless until he gets why he's an idiot. Until this movie stops running, movie theaters and the authorities will have to keep a close eye on those who may want to do a copycat crime.

At least they seem to be getting caught.
Because they are f***ing idiots who don't seem to understand that security has be heightened 10000% ever since the crime they're copying. :o

I agree with the verdict of beating them senseless.

We need to test these people and figure them out. How to do that, I'm no expert on the case, so I'm not sure.

However, I do recall a lot of quotes to the effect of many wishing a lot of perpetrators of crimes like this didn't kill themselves, so we could try to figure out just why this stuff happens... Perhaps to create a link between them that we haven't been able to find due to their deaths.

There is never a satisfactory answer for why someone would kill innocent people. No past experience, no botched arrangement of chromosomes, nothing. The only link between these killers is that they kill, whereas the rest of us don't.

People kill innocents because they're not innocent in their mind. That's all it is to it. Completely subjective psychosis. They want them punished for something, but damned if we know what.

Seriously?

Attorney for armed 'Dark Knight Rises' moviegoer: 'He felt that he needed protection'

A northeast Ohio man brought a gun, ammunition and several knives to a showing of the latest Batman movie because he wanted to protect himself in case someone tried to replicate last month’s deadly Colorado theater shooting, his attorney said Tuesday. Scott A. Smith, 37, had no intention of causing harm or inducing panic when he brought the weapons to a Saturday showing of The Dark Knight Rises, said his attorney, Matthew Bruce. “With the recent shooting in Colorado, and the other incidents around the country in regards to threats, he felt that he needed protection,” Bruce said.

Bruce said he was referring to movie theater threats made after the deadly July 20 shooting in Aurora, Colo., where a 24-year-old man is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 at a midnight showing of the same movie.

Bruce said his client “felt a sense of fear” about going to a theater, and chose the Batman movie by complete coincidence. “Any weapons he may have had on him were solely for protection,” he said.

Smith brought the weapons to a Regal Cinemas theater in Westlake, just outside of Cleveland, and seated himself in the middle of the theater’s back row a half hour before the movie started, police said.

A theater manager and an off-duty police officer working security stopped Smith after they became suspicious of a bag he was carrying, said Westlake Police Lt. Ray Arcuri. “Why pick that movie? Why that theater? Why sit in the back all the way like that? Why bring the gun?” he said. “There’s several unanswered questions.”

Smith was arrested without incident and is currently jailed. Bruce said his client has been cooperative with officials. He was expected to be indicted on several weapons charges, but it’s still too early to determine what those charges will be, said Nicole DiSanto of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s office.

Arcuri said one of the charges police may pursue for Smith is having weapons under disability. He said Smith was taking daily medication, but he would not elaborate on what that medication is. “Our contention is that he’s drug dependent,” he said. “And as a result, he should not be possessing a firearm.”

The theater manager first noticed Smith and a beige bag he carried over his shoulder, Arcuri said. When approached, Smith told the manager it had medical supplies inside. He then showed the manager a portion of the bag that didn’t reveal the weapons.

The off-duty Westlake police officer also noticed Smith and his bag. After checking with the manager, the officer followed Smith into the empty theater.

The officer said Smith consented to a search inside the theater. Arcuri said the officer was more familiar with the bag, and he knew where to look when he found a loaded 9 mm Glock pistol with two extra loaded magazines, Arcuri said. The officer also found three knives in the bag and another knife on Smith, he said. There were also medical supplies, but Arcuri would not elaborate on what they were.

When the officer asked Smith why he brought the weapons into the theater, Smith offered to put them in his car.

Arcuri applauded the off-duty officer for trusting his instincts and pursuing Smith. “For an officer to observe that, take the initiative, approach him,” he said. “Basically, avert a tragedy if he pulls a pistol out and starts shooting.”

Police searched Smith’s North Ridgeville home Monday night and found more weapons, including at least six pistols and several shotguns and rifles, and thousands of rounds of ammunition. They also found more than one bulletproof vest.

Little information is available about Smith. He is married with an infant daughter, Arcuri said. His wife told police her husband was a sleep technician for some sort of medical research, but Arcuri could not elaborate.

Smith also served a brief time in the U.S. Army. He enlisted in January 1995 and reported to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri for basic training that month. He was discharged a month later, according to the Army, which did not disclose why.

Smith had no previous criminal record, Arcuri said. He said Smith did not have a concealed carry permit and should not have brought any weapon to the theater.

“Our job is to protect the community,” he said of police. “It’s not his role. If there’s a gun, it’s because our officers brought it. It’s not his job to bring the gun, it’s ours.”
