2009 MLB Thread, part 2

Girardi won over 100 games with this team. The Yankees aren't going to change coaches when Girardi has obviously been succesful through the season. They didn't fire Torre after the 2004 meltdown. If Girardi gets fired over this, it would be one of the most idiotic moves I've ever seen.

Baseball teams have Managers, not coaches.

And I know he won't be fired if they do somehow lose. Hopefully they won't. But I don't like this short rest strategy.

Of course it had to be Madson who almost blew the World Series. Thanks for not ending the season tonight Phils.

By the way, Burnett's start tonight was officially the third worst in World Series history (based on duration and runs allowed), behind only Russ Ortiz in 2002 and Mordecai Brown in 1906. Yay for AJ!

Hamels deserves it but it shouldn't be coming from some useless white trash like Brett Myers.

Symbolism is through the roof right now:

-1923 Yankees won the World Series in 6 games in their first year at Yankee Stadium

-Pettitte's won four straight big games with multiples of 3 (Game 6 of the ALCS, Game 3 of the ALDS, AL East clincher on September 27th, final game at the old Yankee Stadium on September 21st, 2008)

-November 4th 2001 was the day the last Yankee dynasty died.

Girardi is an idiot.

I said this before last night's game and I am being proven right. Under no circumstances, with a 3-1 series lead do you pitch your 2nd best pitcher on short rest against the ace of the other ballclub.

Granted, Lee wasn't great but now look at what happened. AJ imploded and he is completely wasted and now look at the domino effect on the other starters. All Girardi had to do was pitch Gaudin. Hindsight is not 20/20 for me, I was screaming for this before yesterday's game.

AJ in game 6 at home wins that game 100%. Now we have Pettitte on 3 days rest, 3 days rest!!! A pitcher who needed extra rest down the stretch of the season. A pitcher who hasn't pitched on 3 days rest in 3 years!!! What the hell does Girardi think will happen? I'll tell you. He will get destroyed.

All because Girardi refused to pitch Gaudin. Like I said, you lose the battle to win the war. Now Girardi lost the battle and the war. Mark my words, because of Girardi's moronic managing this series is going 7. And game 7's are always a crapshoot. Not too mention this will be the 2nd time in this series CC will be on short rest.

Thank you for sabotaging your own team Girardi.

Girardi sabotaged his own team. He did one of the most idiotic moves I have ever seen by pitching AJ on short rest in a series he was leading, not trailing! Not only does he lose AJ but it creates a domino effect on the rest of the staff. Why the hell should he have any faith in Andy on short rest when he hasn't done that in 3 years. The Phillies will destroy him. AJ on regular rest in game 6 wins that game 100%. But I guess Girardi is the genius right. He always has to prove how smart he is with his 100 pitching moves a game, and now this.

Girardi deserves to be fired when the Yanks lose this series. He won't but he deserves to be.

That's not symbolism. Those are coincidences.

That "multiple of threes" one is such ********. It's going by the game number for 2 and the date for the other two.

Yankees better not lose the next two at home in a series that they had lead 3-1 before last night's game. Girardi might not be fired if this happens, but he'll forever be tarnished and ridicule because of it. And starting AJ Burnett on 3-day rest indeed turned out disasterous like some of us here have predicted.

Unlike most of you...I may be the only one here that believes Pettite will pitch a great game.

AJ was on regular rest when he pitched Game 5 against the Angels...and look how well that worked out. He gave up 4 runs in the first inning before he even had an out. There's no guarantee he would have sailed through that game last night.

You can't honestly say pitching Gaudin would have been a good thing - he's pitched 1 inning in the postseason and only 2-1/3 since 9/28. Forget losing the battle to win the war, that's crap. We'd still have to go home and face Pedro again and possibly Lee again on short rest. Phillies arms are getting tired too (first thing my Phillies-fan friend said this morning) - Yankees were hitting Lee last night and if it weren't for the bullpen melting down they damn near tied it.

They have no pitching depth beyond those 3 starters ever since they lost Chien-Ming Wang and Joba tanked during the stretch, and prepared for this all through September. We all knew that. If he'd sent Gaudin out there and he was the one who blew the game, Girardi would be getting fried for not sending AJ out there. You don't concede a game, you do everything you can to win a game.

Andy's had 5 career postseason starts on 3 days rest, he's 4-1 with a 2.80 ERA, two of them were World Series games which he won. I got faith in Andy, I trust him out there more than I trust Burnett on full rest or short rest.

As someone mentioned last night....that was almost 3 years ago.

Pedro vs Andy will be one of those games...My hope is to hit pedro more then they did on game 2 and we will both be in the bullpen by the 6th inning.

I believe that as well. I believe in Andy Pettite and that's all the reason I need.

And one of them was 13 years ago. Still, I trust Andy out there more than I trust AJ, even on full rest. Those wild innings of his are a killer, he's been like that all year.

I can't call it, both teams are playing so well it could go either way.

I really want this World Series to be over. And by over I mean on Thursday.

And he was on the road against the Angels. Being at home on full rest against the Phillies is a completely different story!

You can't honestly say pitching Gaudin would have been a good thing - he's pitched 1 inning in the postseason and only 2-1/3 since 9/28. Forget losing the battle to win the war, that's crap. I absolutely can. Because you don't compromise the rest of the damn staff in the process! CC can pitch on short rest because of his size but now you are counting on him doing it twice in a series! His damn arm is about to fall off even for his size. Andy!? Please, don't even get me started. It's laughable if anyone thinks he will pitch well tomorrow. Andy on regular rest is a 6 2/3 IP 4 ER pitcher. I cringe at the thought of him on short rest against the Phillies. It will be ugly.

And as for Gaudin. He has been throwing in simulation on the side for the team. So he probably has about 60 pitches in him. You mean to tell me he wouldn't have gone past the 2nd inning last night. Worst case scenario, he only gives you 2 innings, it's the same crap you got last night anyway! And in the process you don't compromise the rest of the staff! That's the whole point here.

Girardi weakend his team when he pitched AJ because of the effects it has on the rest of the staff. It's not just Gaudin vs AJ for one game, it's the effects afterwards.

We all knew that. If he'd sent Gaudin out there and he was the one who blew the game, Girardi would be getting fried for not sending AJ out there. You don't concede a game, you do everything you can to win a game.
IMO, you don't use your pitchers being up 3 games to 1 the same way you would being down 1 to 3. This is where our philosophies differ. You don't do everything you can at a cost and detriment to the rest of the series to win a game being up 3 to 1.

Andy's had 5 career postseason starts on 3 days rest, he's 4-1 with a 2.80 ERA, two of them were World Series games which he won. I got faith in Andy, I trust him out there more than I trust Burnett on full rest or short rest.
AJ had great numbers on short rest too and we see how that turned out. Andy is different now, he is older and has just recently experienced shoulder fatigued. On full rest, I would have faith in Andy, on short rest, against this lineup, this will get ugly.

Andy's what 37? 3 day rest idk if it'll work out tomorrow, but i wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to have a good game

^Andy will get hammered tomorrow. There will be a game 7. Take it to the bank.

^ hope so, they better not go with Hamels for game 7
