2009 MLB Thread, part 2

So, according to Heyman, Girardi is leaning towards a 3 man rotation and Manuel appears to be using Pedro in game 2 and Lee will be starting 1, 4 and 7.

I think it's a mistake to use AJ and Pettitte on 3 days rest. This could get real ugly. One can barely trust AJ on regular rest let alone on 3 days rest in an opposing ballpark in a playoff game with most likely not using his preferred catcher . Then we have Pettitte who suffered from shoulder fatigue down the stretch and who hasn't pitched I think on 3 days rest since 2006.

Not that Gaudin is some great altnernative but IMO, that's a better option because if he does get roughed up you at least still have a better AJ at home following the Gaudin start. And Gaudin wouldn't be facing Lee in game 5, it would be Happ or Blanton.

This is how I would do it if I was Girardi:

Game 1 Wednesday: CC vs. Lee
Game 2 Thursday: AJ vs. Pedro
Game 3 Saturday: Pettitte vs. Hamels
Game 4 Sunday: CC vs. Lee
Game 5 Monday: Gaudin vs. Happ or Blanton
Game 6 Wednesday: AJ vs. Pedro or (Happ or Blanton) - depending on game 5 starter
Game 7 Thursday: CC vs. Lee

Blanton will likely start Game 5, Happ will likely throw out of the bullpen again with Myers being added to the roster.

Pedro at Yankees stadium will be John Smoltz getting bombed all over again. The guy is shot. Maybe he'll give you 3-4 solid innings tops. I'd yank him after that.

Why are they pitching him in game 2 again? Cause he has experience winning in New York?

What are your thoughts on Pedro as opposed to Hamels in game 2?

I'm fine with it. He was very impressive against The Dodgers. I believe Pedro wants a new contract (2 year deal) so he's pretty motivated. Hamels pitches better at home usually.

Pedro has a better chance because he has more pitches to work with and can vary them by changing his arm slot (the biggest reason for his success in the early 00's). Smoltz's slider sucked that night the Yankees pounded him.

I would have pitched Hamels at Yankee Stadium b/c he pitched well against the Dodgers last outing and he has a better chance of not being hurt by the 200 ft RF.

Werth looks stoned and is trying to hide it with the shades. Hamels looks like he's auditioning the part of Jack from Lost circa 2004. Chan Ho Park is a Yukuza member. Charlie looks like a Chimney sweep from Mary Poppins 40 years later.

Is Hamels modeling for some magazine? lol

That's Werth's look

^As is potentially using AJ on 3 days rest in an opposing ballpark. IMO, that could be a disaster. I just heard Girardi on the radio. He said using only 3 starters is not a lock. He seemed a little wary of the idea of using other starters outside of CC on short rest. So a game 5 start of Gaudin is definitely a possibility. Not that Gaudin is some great alternative. But a game 5 start with Gaudin or AJ on short rest is a gamble either way. I would take the gamble on Gaudin and if he sucks, which he most likely will, then at least he can be backed up the next game with a regular rested AJ at home. Besides, Gaudin would be facing Blanton most likely in game 5, the Yanks may be able to knock him around just as the Phils do to Gaudin.

I think you will only see AJ in game 2 and game 6

CC
AJ
Andy
Gaudin
CC
AJ
CC

^I agree with only seeing AJ in games 2 and 6. But, IMO, CC gets the start in game 4 and then Gaudin gets game 5. Girardi will want to match CC against Lee and we already know Lee is going 1, 4, and 7.

I think the rotation will go

CC
AJ
Petite
CC-3 Days
Gaudin
AJ
CC-3 Days

didn't they do that rotation with the Angels?

They did that rotation but Petitte pitched on 5 days rest and AJ on 4 days because of a rain out and a day between games 4 and 5. Neither did 3 days. No break between games 4 and 5 this round.

Saw this on Rotoworld:

Chad Gaudin-S-Yankees Oct. 27 - 2:29 pm et

Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland said Tuesday that the Yankees are "stretching out" Chad Gaudin to potentially start Game 5 of the World Series.

New York could go with a three-man rotation of CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte, but that would involve all three pitchers working on short rest and the team may only feel comfortable doing that with Sabathia. Gaudin would likely be limited to 80-90 pitches after spending the first two rounds as a reliever.
